Well-maintained house ideally situated for a relaxed self-catering holiday

The directions supplied by the owner before our visit allowed us to find Hooter House easily. The house was larger than I expected which was a pleasant surprise and also very clean. The kitchen was well-stocked for self-catering and the beds were comfortable. The living room opens to a balcony overlooking a back garden which in turn looks over the neighbouring farm. The balcony was perfectly safe for our 2-year old daughter to run around. The garden was small but very pleasant.

If the weather is bad (as it was 1 day for us), don't bother to try streaming any TV programmes. The entertainment setup includes Netflix but internet connection proved too slow for this to be usable. However there is a decent range of standard TV channels, plenty of books and plenty of board games to play.

Salcombe wasn't our cup of tea. We found it overpriced and offering nothing of interest that I could see. It isn't what I'd call a "real town" - mainly set up to sell stuff to tourists. I would advise staying the Portlemouth side which was beautiful with great views from the house and lots of walking paths. The beaches are fantastic. No shops though so best to stock up with food/drink before arrival if self-catering (or take excursions out to a proper town like Kingsbridge to shop).

If you have small children, the steep steps cutting down from the house to the beaches are OK to go down, but tricky to get a pushchair up. Better to zig-zag up on the roads which is a bit of a trek but we enjoyed it.

So why 5 stars? Because the location is interesting with beaches and hills not just countryside/woods. Plus, the house is so clean and well-stocked and the owners very efficient in providing necessary information.

We have holidayed in East Portlemouth for 20 years, and were lucky enough to Find Hooter House 14years ago. Our 3 children have spent summers on Mill Bay every year of their lives and are now 14,16 & !8! and still love their East Portlemouth holidays. A lot of our summer holiday weeks are used by ourselves and by guests who have been coming back year after year, but do please enquire - this could be the first of many stays for you!
