Clean and spacious

  • 5 of 5

The property was clean, spacious and had wonderful views. There is excellent coastal walking on both sides of the estuary leading to Gara Rock and Prawle Point on the Portlemouth side with easily accessible National Trust coastal walks on the Salcombe side. There is a lovely beach down the pathway from the house. If you have people in your group who struggle with steep hills they may need to take a car a short drive to the local foot ferry if you want to access the beach and Salcombe. This is ideal for families who like beaches, walking, fishing, boating and visiting towns.

Great house, beautiful setting!

  • 4 of 5

A lovely 3 night stay in this delightful house.

Accommodated 3 generations during a 40th wedding anniversary celebration. Ideally situated for walks and to catch the ferry boat to Salcombe. The only downside was no local pub within walking distance, but it didn't impact on the holiday.

Comfortable family house.

  • 4 of 5

Lovely peaceful location with great views. Owner helpful and friendly. Property basic but perfectly adequate , spotless on arrival. Care needed when parking outside house. Easier to park on road and walk down steps. Steep walk down to estuary.

the [property is generally tired and needs up-dating

  • 2 of 5

the layout is great (bedrooms on the ground floor), with estuary views visible. there is simply not enough equipment in the house for 8 people. The cooker was extremely difficult to operate as the hob rings were no longer thermostatically controlled (either on or off). the fire alarm battery was flat, bedside lamps did not work (and hadn't been for some considerable time as this was recorded in the visitor book) the coffee machine was non-functioning: the list could go on!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. We are so sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the house. We are sorry that the light bulbs were not working during your stay. Our cleaner checks these and that the smoke alarms are working. Spare light bulbs are available in the under stairs cupboard and smoke alarm batteries in the kitchen drawers, we will highlight this for future guests in the house notes. Thank you for bringing the issues with the hob to our attention. On receipt of your feedback we have already made arrangements for this to be replaced. Thank you for your positive comments on the layout and the view. Future guests will be pleased to know that as part of our continuing refurbishment of Hooter House a new glass balcony has been fitted this week.

Fantastic relaxing break away

  • 5 of 5

It's a lovely house situated on a hill with a steep walk down to the beach. It is very remote and quite difficult to get to if you don't have a 4x4 especially in winter!! The house itself was really well equipped and had everything you could possibly need. There was plenty of room for 4 adults, 4 children and 2 dogs and the rooms were beautifully clean and tidy and very warm and welcoming.

We would love to come and stay again in the Spring or Summer and take full advantage of the gorgeous walks around the estuary and take the ferry across to Salcombe again. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your comments. So pleased you had a lovely stay, it really is a special place. There are a few country lanes on the way there but a Fiat 500 manages easily - don't want to put off anyone without a 4x4:) There is a tidal road which can be tricky on the way there - satnavs do tend to send you this way. The directions I send have a much easier route. Look forward to welcoming you again. Best wishes Trish

Well-maintained house ideally situated for a relaxed self-catering holiday

  • 5 of 5

The directions supplied by the owner before our visit allowed us to find Hooter House easily. The house was larger than I expected which was a pleasant surprise and also very clean. The kitchen was well-stocked for self-catering and the beds were comfortable. The living room opens to a balcony overlooking a back garden which in turn looks over the neighbouring farm. The balcony was perfectly safe for our 2-year old daughter to run around. The garden was small but very pleasant.

If the weather is bad (as it was 1 day for us), don't bother to try streaming any TV programmes. The entertainment setup includes Netflix but internet connection proved too slow for this to be usable. However there is a decent range of standard TV channels, plenty of books and plenty of board games to play.

Salcombe wasn't our cup of tea. We found it overpriced and offering nothing of interest that I could see. It isn't what I'd call a "real town" - mainly set up to sell stuff to tourists. I would advise staying the Portlemouth side which was beautiful with great views from the house and lots of walking paths. The beaches are fantastic. No shops though so best to stock up with food/drink before arrival if self-catering (or take excursions out to a proper town like Kingsbridge to shop).

If you have small children, the steep steps cutting down from the house to the beaches are OK to go down, but tricky to get a pushchair up. Better to zig-zag up on the roads which is a bit of a trek but we enjoyed it.

So why 5 stars? Because the location is interesting with beaches and hills not just countryside/woods. Plus, the house is so clean and well-stocked and the owners very efficient in providing necessary information.
