About Rona and Peter

We are a retired couple, living in North Wales but spending half the year in the sunny Vendee maintaining and servicing our gites, gardens and heated pools (not a bad life!). Two of our properties are totally private within their own private gardens with private heated pools; they are not on shared sites but a few kilometres apart. The third is a 2 bedroom cottage in a hamlet without a pool. There are no owners on site but each property is within 20 minutes drive from where we stay whilst in France. All the facilities at each property are for the sole use of our guests too - nothing is shared. We have more than 20 years experience to draw on and can advise you personally about travel, places to go and things to do. If you come over with just immediate family for company, with friends or as an extended family, please consider one of our lovely properties.

Rona and Peter purchased this cottage in 2004

A great, relaxing escape

  • 5 of 5

We found the house just as described, clean and well maintained. We stayed at the end of August and were lucky with the weather, so able to enjoy the great pool and garden (as well as the table tennis, pool and darts!). The house has loads of room, and was very comfortable. We particularly enjoyed barbecuing using the brick BBQ near the pool, and eating outside.

Having Sky TV (the free channels) is a big plus for Brits, and reasonable internet access too.

We saw Rona about 3 times during our week - she was very welcoming and helpful, and nearby if needed (without being at all intrusive).

The local village has a small supermarket, creperie, bakery, etc although we did most of our shopping at the hyper-U hypermaket about 10/15 mins away.

This property is well placed for access to the surrounding area, including the coast. It's about 6 1/2 hours from Calais, so reachable by mid-afternoon.

We will certainly look to rent this house again!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your kind words and for leaving the house in such good order. We will be very pleased to see you back at La Maison Blanche anytime [ from May to the end of September!]. You may consider travelling over overnight from Portsmouth next time - the property is less than three and a half hours from St Malo and you could be in the heated pool before midday, refreshed after a good night's sleep on the ferry We are always available to help and advise as required. when required. You would not have noticed Peter checking out the pool and gardens before you got up - he always like to do those chores without disturbing anyone!! Our aim is to ensure that our guests have a great holiday. A bientot, Peter and Rona

A fantastic family home with an amazing garden and a heated pool

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week over the half term and in spite of some indifferent weather we had a great time. The house was immaculate and as described .The heated pool meant that we could all enjoy the lovely private pool regardless of the weather and the garden was lovely. The house is very well equipped and we all enjoyed playing table tennis and pool. As a keen cook I really appreciated the well equipped kitchen and bar b que area. The property is located a short walk from the village centre which has two restaurants, shops, a pharmacy and a bank and the beautiful abbey is well worth a visit. The town of Fontenay le compte is a short drive away and we found some really good restaurants and an excellent range of larger shops. We also spent a very enjoyable day in La Rochelle which was a 50 minute drive away. The children really enjoyed the aquarium and there where some fantastic restaurants on the quayside. The owners Peter and Rona made us feel very welcome an where always available to give advice on local attractions. We will definitely be back an can highly recommend the property

Brilliant property! Lots of space, great pool.

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed here along with my brother and his family and my parents and had a fantastic holiday. The number of beds and rooms gave us plenty of flexibility for the 11 of us. The house was as described on the website and was clean and well presented. The garden, heated pool, table tennis, pool table and darts gave us lots to do. The dining tables (both inside and out) were big enough to seat us all comfortably. We visited the local boulangerie every day and the lovely creperie once. The house is in a beautiful location on the outskirts of the village and just over an hour's drive from the beach. The owners were very friendly and helpful. I would certainly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you all had such a great holiday - and we'd like to thank you all for leaving the property in such good order. The changeover team were delighted to be able to walk in and start preparing for the next group, arriving in a few hours after you left, straight away. Not all families leave gites clean and tidy 'as found'; sometimes they don't allow themselves enough time; some do not realise how much cleaning is needed and many have not stayed in French run gites where deposits are withheld if the house is not left ready for the next guests to walk in! We do offer an 'end of stay' cleaning service for those guests who need it - though it is evident that you and the family would not require such intervention! Larger groups made up of different generations need plenty of indoor and outdoor space and La Maison Blanche certainly provides that, as you noted. It's worth remembering that we can offer really good deals for couples and smaller groups outside the 6 weeks of the UK school holidays. We'd love to see you and the family, all together or in smaller numbers, back at Maison Blanche sometime again soon. Best wishes, Peter, Rona, Sheila and Pauline !!

Lovely large house in beautiful village

  • 4 of 5

We spent 2 weeks at La Maison Blanche with our children and 5 grandchildren (aged from 5 to 1) and had a great, relaxing holiday. We were 11 people in total and the house provided perfect and very relaxed accommodation for us all; there is a great deal of flexibility in terms of rooms and beds, and we, the grandparents, were very happy to be in the upstairs rooms (though you need to be quite fit to manage the stairs!). The garden is large and beautiful with lots of separate areas and the swimming pool is super as it is fenced and heated. We loved the pretty village, Nieul sur l'Autise, just up the road, with its fantastic Abbey, and the Creperie which we visited many times and thought was brilliant. Rona and Peter are very helpful and responsive but also careful not to be intrusive. All in all, a super house and situation, we liked it so much that we have booked it again for next year!

Owner's Response: We are so pleased that you all enjoyed your holiday at La Maison Blanche and look forward to seeing you all again next August. It is not easy to find a property to suit three generations of the same family but Maison Blanche ticks most boxes as there is enough room for everyone, inside and out as the rooms are spacious and the garden large. We know our photos do not do it justice and we need to update our skills in that area but at least nothing is enhanced nor airbrushed!!! It is great to be able to walk to the boulangerie in the morning, isn't it, and the convenience store, chemist and butcher's shop are all within 10 minutes walk. We know you love the Creperie du Moulin and the bar restaurant too. Many thanks for taking the time to send in the review. Best wishes and a bientot, Peter and Rona

Lovely relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

The house is huge with a lovely swimming pool and gardens, if anything, it was even better than the description and photos. The property was in good condition and very clean. The owners provided good customer service and were very helpful giving good advice about places to visit, local shops, restaurants, etc. We would certainly recommend this property to anyone looking for a good relaxing family holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for going to the trouble of reviewing your stay at La Maison Blanche. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your holiday. It is a spacious house with a lot of flexibility of bedroom accommodation which can easily be adapted to suit different group sizes, age groups and more than one family - and there are also enough toilets! Out of the main season, we are happy to reduce the price for couples. It is also ideal for one couple, using just one of the en-suite bedrooms - plus the kitchen , lounge, family bathroom and the other facilities, including the heated pool you and the family enjoyed so much. So if you fancy a 'family free break' or choose to come back with all the family/ friends, you will be welcome back anytime. Best wishes, Peter and Rona.

Brilliant Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing holiday here. We were 4 families holidaying together who had never done so before and one grandfather. Some of us were there for 2 weeks, others for 1 week and others for more or less and we all had a great time. Childrens aged 2, 5, 7, 9, 11 & 15 all had a fabulous time in the pool and even went midnight swimming (well, it was more like 10pm) with a car providing the lighting! The accommodation was flexible and in the end most of the children slept in one room so they could have midnight feasts. There was plenty of room for us all (total of 15 all in) and everything you could ask for in terms of utensils, bedding etc. were there - and if they weren't Peter & Rona were available to provide us with whatever. We walked to the village on numerous occasions and even the 5 year old didn't complain as we usually ended up in the Creperie which was our favourite eaterie. The bar in the village also had lovely food but the owners went on their annual holiday midway through our stay - we were most disappointed! I can't really recommend this property more - we had treasure hunts round the extensive garden, had baking competitions, played table tennis and lots of other games, visited the lakes and markets and generally had lots and lots of fun on this holiday - if you're thinking about going do!

Discovering gourmet restaurants, visiting the Chateau and the Saturday market or just walking along the banks of the river Vendee. La Maison Blanche is ideal for holidaymakers who enjoy day trips to places of interest on and around the Atlantic coast, yet it is just far enough from those main tourist areas to be totally tranquil; the pattern of French rural life soon envelops holidaymakers here. From the Atlantic Coast to the Vendée Bocage, through the Poitevin marshland. The Vendée now has some 800km-worth of cycle paths – which will eventually be extended to a thousand km of safe, way marked trails. There are three circuits in the Vendée: the coastal circuit (180 km), passing through nature spots (dunes, woodland and marshland) and accessing all of the coastal communities; the Poitevin marshland circuit (140 km), setting off from the Aiguillon Bay and crossing the main marsh channels, up to Maillezais Abbey and on to Mervent-Vouvant Forest, and last but not least the Bocage circuit (over 470 km), along which you can complete a loop more than 275 km long through farmland, past such remarkable sites as the Puy du Fou®, Historial, Logis de la Chabotterie and Château de Tiffauges.
