From Olhão waterfront take boat trips & eco tours. There are children's play areas next to the promenade. Enjoy the wonderful spa facilities in the 5-star hotel adjacent to the apartment complex. Many golf courses are within an easy drive. Good walking trails in the hills to the north. Many local festivals in the summer.

My husband Mike and I have been resident in the Algarve since 2007 and live just 25 minutes away from our apartment in Olhão. This means we are on hand to deal personally with your individual holiday needs and requirements. We have met many very nice people, who due to repeat bookings we regard as friends. Our guests receive a personal greeting on arrival, whether at the airport or at the apartment and our guests comment that this sets their holiday off to a great start. Perfect from start to finish

After looking through many listings and reviews for a property which would be suitable for a wheelchair user we settled on Mary & Mikes apartment based on the very good reviews we had read and we are so glad we did!

From our initial contact Mary assured us that the property would meet our needs and even went to the trouble of providing toilet seat raisers and a bath seat to make our stay as easy as possible.

Everything about the apartment was as good, if not better than we had expected. The pictures on the listing are no different to what we found when we stayed. The apartment was immaculate throughout, furnished to a high standard and just as importantly comfortable. We both slept there as well as we would have at home. Every convenience had been provided for, from soap to tea and coffee.

The shared rooftop pool & sundeck was a real bonus and with lift access to the roof meant that on the days we weren't up to going far we could be by the pool with minimal effort.Throughout our stay we were lucky enough to have the sole use of this area.

We would have no problem in recommending this apartment and plan on returning next year.

Thank you again Mary & Mike for such a friendly welcome and making our stay such a pleasurable experience.

lovely spacious apartment

We have just arrived home after staying at Mike and Mary's lovely spacious well equipped apartment.There was 5 adults staying here yet it is so large we would lose each other we were welcomed by mike and Mary on arrival they are lovely people and they have thought of everything it's like home from home from the first moment of booking the correspondence and all questions were answered quickly made they made sure we were looked after .A lovely welcome pack on arrival was a lovely well appreciated treat .The rooftop pool is a godsend as it was in the high 30s Olhao is a beautiful unspoilt resort the wildlife beaches restaurants are amazing.If you stay here you will not be disappointed its brilliant thank you Mike and Mary for a lovely holiday hope to see you again soon x

Excellent well-equipped,well-maintained apartment

The owners take pride in this apartment which is reflected in its immaculate condition. They provide a service which felt personal from the booking stage, the transfer from the airport and our departure. Our highlights would be the local restaurants with the 'stand out' meal being our first evening at the nearby 'Steak and Co' where the food was beautifully prepared and was good value, and a day trip to Armona where the Atlantic beach is superb. A 'bonus' of our stay was the roof-top pool to which we had exclusive access! Olhao is a traditional Portuguese fishing town rather than a tourist resort with the old town being its most attractive part. We made good use of the local Lidl which is about 10 minutes away taking the direct route along the busy main road. We did not hire a car but possibly would if our stay had been longer than 5 days as this is a good location for exploring the eastern Algarve.

We never get tired of staying at this apartment. The location, view and super fast wi-fi is matched by the high quality fixtures and fittings. This coupled with the 'personal service' offered by Mary and Mike makes this the 'must stay' apartment in the Real Marina complex.

Perfect apartment, Mike and Mary are friendly and you immeadiately are made to feel welcome in there tastefully decorated and spacious home. Would recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing stay in a great area perfect for a stroll along the harbour and a sit down with a cool drink whilst watching the sun set. We will be back.

We chose Olhão because it is a place we love, full of traditional Portuguese character, offering a variety of experiences, whether you like to sit and watch the many varied species of birds, relax in a waterfront cafe with a nice cold drink and people watch, or just relax on one of the beautiful sandy beaches the area has to offer. A food lover could not find a better place to eat and drink, especially if fish is for you, and because Olhão has still not been exploited by the tourist trade the prices are still traditional as well! Olhão is easily accessible by road and has the mainline rail link running through the old town for those who wish to explore further afield.

Algarve's Parque Natural de Ria Formosa is one of Portugal's most beautiful natural harbours. Situated between Quinta do Lago & Cacela Velha in central Algarve, the lagoon is home to a wide variety of birds, plant life, & crustaceans. Large expanses of marshes & salty areas provide habitats for many types of wildlife. The lagoon is best known for its birdlife -storks, flamingos, common caimans, dwarf sea swallows, grey plovers, tailor birds, waders, common hawthorns, straight beaked kingfishers, ducks & water cocks. Some birds of prey ie hunting kestrel are also seen in this area.

Information about Ria Formosa Natural Park is available at the Park Office on the Eastern edge of Olhao.

Olhao's famous Shellfish Festival (Marisco) is usually mid-August, as well as the vast variety of shellfish, live entertainment is provided attracting people from far & wide.

Coast/Beach:

Olhão is surrounded by 'Ilhas' sand spit islands, which protect the marshy lagoon, but Olhão also boasts many beautiful beaches. The two nearest islands to Olhão are served all year with regular ferry crossings from Olhoã's jetty, less than 10 mins walk from the apartment. The 'Ilhas' have sandy beaches, restaurants, bars. There are many other sandy beaches along the Algarve coastline.

Olhao rail station has regular services to Faro, Fuzeta, Lisbon, Spanish border, etc. Approximate drive distances: Central Faro 10km - historic old town & great modern shopping centre. 15km to Faro beaches. Loule 25 min a pretty inland town. Almancil 25 min. Tavira 18km. Vilamoura 30km. Albufeira 40km, Vila Real & Spanish border 60km. N125 old coast road passes through several coastal towns, including Olhao. A22 toll is the newer road a few miles North is quicker for longer east-west journeys.

Further Details:

The town of Olhao has about 30,000 inhabitants and was raised to the status of a town in 1808 on the 16th of June when they revolted against the French occupying army. Then 17 local fishermen successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean without charts in their small fishing boat “Bom Sucesso”. Their purpose was to announce to the exiled King of Portugal, Dom João IV, that the French invading armies had been defeated & had returned to France leaving Portugal free for their King to return. Architecturally the town is well known for an older quarter where the flat terraced roofs and straight box-shaped chimneys show a definite Moorish flavour. Another curiosity is the fish market in a long building on the waterfront. Every morning there is a lively atmosphere & the impressively large variety of fish offered is displayed to tempt customers.

Olhão in the north east corner of the main part of the Ria Formosa is a fishing port with a fairly large trawler fleet it is well known as the place where the Portuguese Water Dog has been bred for the last 1,600 years having being brought there by the Visigoths when they settled in Portugal around 400AD this most unusual and extremely intelligent breed has curly hair and webbed feet was used by the fisherman from Olhao for chasing fish into their nets, retrieving fishing tackle and taking messages to other boats. They are strong swimmers both under and on top of the water. The breed has become much better known recently as a result of President Obama and his family being given a Portuguese Water Dog by the late Senator Edward Kennedy, which has been called Bo.

Marina Village is well situated at the western end of Olhão, just across the road from the Marina which holds some stunning boats. It is conveniently placed for an easy walk to the nearby supermarkets, and in the other direction a stroll along the promenade to a host of restaurants, the old town with its quiet and quaint cobbled streets, and further on to the modern shopping mall. Our apartment at Marina Village apartment was completed in January 2012 and is built to the highest standard offering clean modern accommodation. If it is a quiet, relaxing holiday you want then look no further.

  • Notes on accommodation: The apartment is managed and serviced by my husband and I, we are British but Portuguese residents living just 25 minutes away. Within the Marina Village development is the 5* Real Marina Hotel & Spa. This has a great range of wonderful spa facilities, which can be booked by non-residents - simply enquire at hotel reception. All windows have Juliet balconies, with toughened glass and steel balcony rails that are 1.2 mtrs high. We advise that children under the age of 12 years should be accompanied at all times when using the rooftop pool. Outside: Large terrace off the lounge with views of the Ria Formosa and saltpans with Faro in the distance. Modern design terrace table, chairs and footstools for four. Private rooftop pool shared only with other apartments in Bloco 8 accessible only to residents/guests - 8 x 4 mtr pool is located in a beautifully decked out roof area with sunbeds, changing room with WC and separate showers. Access to adjacent Real Marina five star hotel pool and facilities. Utility Room: This is an enclosed drying room the washing machine is an integral unit in the kitchen. Central vacuum system unit. Airer, iron & board. Brushes, mop & bucket. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bathroom towels and bed linen supplied. Fresh towels and bed linen provided weekly.
