There has been a bishopric here since the 6th century and you can visit the Bishops Palace and museum, the Cathedral of Notre Dame de la Sede, the beautiful Toulousaines style 11th century church of St.Lizier with it's octagonal bell tower, serene cloisters and the 18th century pharmacy - all a stroll from the apartment. The village boasts a superb restaurant in the Bishops Palace, its terrace overlooking the mountains and just across the road from the apartment is 11 place de l'eglise where you can also eat in or outside and enjoy the view and a light lunch in the summer. Also in the summer, there is another little cafe-bar which offers snacks and drinks. This sunny Garden Apartment is on the ground floor with easy access from secure parking. It has a private terrace and the apartment has been entirely renovated providing comfortable accommodation for four with two en suite bedrooms, spacious open plan living area and French windows onto the terrace. About the Owner

I've been living in Africa since the late 60s and have had a house in France since 1990 and enjoyed spending many holidays exploring. In 2006 I left Zimbabwe and came to live in the Midi Pyrenees and have settled very happily in this beautiful and friendly part of the country. I enjoy the fact that friends in Europe find it easier to visit me in France than they did in Africa - and of course friends from Africa just love coming here! I've started painting and gardening, love cooking and am a regular walker and I do love the fact that there is so much going on here within an easy radius - it really is relatively undiscovered and there is lots to explore. I hope you'll chose to visit Saint Lizier and see for yourself.

A wonderful apartment in a glorious setting

  • 5 of 5

We had an extremely enjoyable week at the Garden Apartment. The apartment itself is very spacious, comfortable and relaxing. St Lizier is rich in history and very characterful. After days out exploring the local castles, waterfalls, lakes and caves, we loved spending the evening on the wonderful terrace and taking in the spectacular views.

Jane is a great host; she provided lots of information and was always on hand if we needed her (but was never intrusive).

We can highly recommend this property and hope to return ourselves one day.

Owner's Response: Hi Rebecca and Steven, Thank you for your great review! It was good to meet you both and although I didn't see very much of you, I was so glad that you really made the most of your trip and visited so many places in this beautiful part of the Ariege. And thank you for leaving the apartment spotlessly clean and tidy! Hope you'll come back again - we have unfinished museums and more to discuss! best greetings, Jane

A wonderful holiday in a wonderful location

  • 5 of 5

The really striking thing about this apartment is the view from the balcony, which is just amazing, across a beautiful valley right up to snow covered mountains of the Pyrenees. That view just keeps drawing you out onto the balcony to take it all in.

St Lizier is a beautiful, historic little place too, and the market at St Girons is well worth a visit.

We were there for the walking and bird watching, and we were not disappointed. Several days we spent high in the mountains, where the views were even more spectacular, and where we were delighted to see vultures, and other smaller birds. All the walks were well marked.

The apartment was clean and well equipped. Jane, the owner, was an absolute treasure, very helpful, and if she didn't know the answer, she knew someone who did! We would love to go back some time soon.

Wonderful views

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely week at this apartment. The apartment is clean, well-equipped and comfortable with fabulous views from the terrace overlooking the Pyrenees. Jane, the owner, couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful and even organised bikes for us to hire before our arrival. St Lizier is a lovely village and there are some great restaurants, walks and bike rides in the area. A perfect place for a holiday - and there was nothing nicer than sitting having a meal looking out at the view after a lovely day in the hills. Highly recommended!

Garden Apartment, St Lizier

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday here and stayed on a few days longer than booked as we liked it so much! The accommodation is excellent - everything you need and very tasteful/restful. The views of the mountains are beautiful and the terrace area in front of the property faces the view, is sheltered and sunny, and also overlooks the pretty garden. In good weather it is lovely to open the doors from the main bedroom and enjoy the scenery and when its stormy in the mountains, its nice to pull the shutters closed and let it all pass by!

The very friendly owner lives in the apartment above and is quiet, discreet and extremely helpful. We might have felt that being in such close proximity would be a bit of a problem, but it really isn't - a positive advantage in fact.

The area allows for a mix of activities. We went for the walking and there are many possible routes to suit all levels of fitness etc. The tourist offices provide good information on walks. We found we drove to Seix and to the Bethmale valley to start most of our walks but really enjoyed the Cirque de Cagateille ( not sure of spelling) as well as local village walks (again easy to choose a route and very pretty).

Meanwhile Foix is not far and a nice town to visit. St Lizier itself is quiet-ish, interesting and has a nice salon de the plus a supermarket a few minutes away by car. St Girons Saturday market is good, although we spent limited time there.

Easy drive from Toulouse - good choice - highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Sheran, thank you so much for a brilliant review! I really do appreciate you taking the time to write one for me. Weather after you left has been very up and down with some sunshine and some hailstones! But next week is set to be sunny all the way. And thanks too for the written instructions for the Cirque de Cagateille walk - I'm off to do it this weekend! best greetings to you both. Jane

A perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

We spent a fabulous week at this lovely property in the heritage village of St. Lizier, centrally located for all activities in the Ariege. A very warm welcome and clean, well appointed property, with all our needs catered for. Highlights were the newly restored Palais d'Eveques literally yards away, and the fantastic views of the Pyrenees. Highly recommended.

Location

From the Owner

Well it was the view that initially sold me. A breath-taking view across the foothills of the Pyrenees to the snow capped mountains. Then it was the garden - I have been waiting for five years to begin a new garden and now I have my garden! And I love the area for it's beauty and the calm laid-back atmosphere. And I love the fact that I can be shopping in Toulouse in an hour, or lunching in Spain in 90 minutes, in Bilbao at the Guggenheim in four hours, or I can be picnicing with friends in a high mountain meadow filled with summer wild flowers and watched by the black velvety Merens horses. If I want to be remote, I can be remote, and if I want to join the hustle and bustle of the city, I can do that too, so easily! For me, I couldn't ask for more - the Midi Pyrenees is the best!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Blagnac, Toulouse, approximately 90 minutes at 85 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Just over the road! at 40 Metres Nearest Ferry : Probably Santander at 400 Kilometres Nearest Golf : La Bastide deSerou at 30 Kilometres Nearest Train : Boussens at 25 Kilometres Nearest Motorway : A64 from Toulouse to Atlantic coast at 30 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Le Carre de l'Ange at 100 Metres Nearest Ski : Five excellent stations, nearest is Guzet Neige at 30 Kilometres Car: recommended

NEWS FLASH: TOUR DE FRANCE, STAGE 13 BEGINS IN ST. GIRONS ON JULY 14 2017 FRANCE'S NATIONAL DAY - MAKE SURE YOU'RE BOOKED WITH US IN ST. LIZIER FOR A REALLY MEMORABLE SPORTING SHOW.

Special interest holidays: July through mid September, painting courses at the St. Lizier studio of English artist David Sawyer. Check his website www.davidsawyerrba.artweb.com

In September you can join us for a celebration of top quality pan-European art and craft in St. Lizier bringing together artists and craft practitioners from across the south of France.

In June we have the Transhumance - when the sheep, cattle and horses are walked from the farms around the Ariege, up into the high summer pastures. This event is well planned and many visitors join the walks or ride with the horses. It's a great experience and offers a window onto the traditions of this area.

AND see the TOUR DE FRANCE riders as they race through the town or take a high vantage point and watch the race as they climb in the Pyreneen peaks.

And almost best of all - we have GREAT trekking and walking.

And since May 2016 we have a brand new indoor swimming pool with 250sq.m pool, paddling pool, sauna, hammam and jacuzzi in St. Girons - really good entertainment for the whole family, and at the Hotel Eychenne, also in St. Girons, you can book a little bit of pampering at their excellent spa which has the best masseuse in the whole Ariege!

Coast/Beach:

The Midi Pyrenees is pretty much in the middle of the south of France as its name implies! But a three hour drive through Foix, Mirepoix and Carcassonne will bring you to the Mediterranean coast and Cathar country. A three hour drive west will bring you to the Atlantic coast where you can easily drive into Spain or enjoy the beaches of St. Jean de Luz, Bayonne and Biarritz. However, right here in the Pyrenees, there are many mountain lakes and streams for swimming - bracing, but beautiful!

Travel:

St.Lizier is a 60 minute drive from Toulouse Blagnac for international flights. There is a train service from Cazeres, 35kms from St. Lizier to Matabiau station Toulouse, with a bus or tram to the airport. EasyJet flies to Toulouse and Tarbes/Lourdes, 90 minutes from St.Lizier and Ryan Air flies to Salvaza Airport in Carcassonne which is two hours away. The main car hire companies are represented at all three airports, but it is advisable to make car hire bookings before arriving in France.

Distances:

The pink city of Toulouse on the Garonne is an hour from the village and offers visitors museums, churches, markets, beautiful architecture and great food and shopping. Andorra and Spain are also easily accessible for day trips but closer to home are many delightful villages and small market towns that are well worth exploring especially those in the mountains. During the summer many have colourful local fetes and concerts. The east/west A64 motorway is 30 minutes away.

Further Details:

This is an undiscovered secret - the Ariege in the Midi Pyrenees! Green and lush, dramatic scenery, historically interesting, culturally exciting and so easy to get to. The Ariege offers visitors an enormous variety of things to do both culturally and in the area of sporting activities and they are all relatively close to hand. The winter months are for skiing, hiking, biking and cross country skiing.

Throughout the summer months, there is a huge choice of music, theatre, dance and sporting activities - St. Lizier hosts a four week international music festival which takes place in the church and venues around the department and in August St. Girons holds a colourful parade, Autrefois en Couserons bringing back the traditions and costumes of the olden times in mountain villages - traditions that still live on today in many villages.

And for a bit more sporting action, the Ariege has plenty to offer including walking, riding, gliding, trout fishing, paragliding, golf and swimming. Throughout the area walks are clearly signposted and information is available from the tourist offices - the office in St. Lizier is a five minute walk from the apartment. In May and June you can join the Transhumances en Couserans, and walk with the shepherds when they take their sheep and cattle to the high pastures for the summer and in July, you can be guided on Le Chemin de la Liberte or Freedom Trail which follows the escape routes over the Pyrenees into Spain that were used by allied soldiers and airmen during WW2.

This really is a very beautiful, friendly place to spend a holiday discovering the Ariege with its gentle climate and lots to do - but if you prefer to just take it easy, soak up the sunshine, enjoy the view from the terrace and some gourmet dining - well you can do that too!

St. Girons has a good selection of shops, supermarkets, restaurants and a colourful Saturday market where you can buy local produce or just people watch on one of the many cafe terraces
