THE BEST OF ALL MOUNTAIN VIEWS FROM YOUR TERRACE IN ST. LIZIER!

In the historic Gallo-roman village of St. Lizier, on the Route de Sainte Jacques de Compostelle, our Garden Apartment is situated above the market town of St. Girons with a spectacular panorama of the Pyrenees. There has been a bishopric here since the 6th century and you can visit the Bishops Palace and museum, the Cathedral of Notre Dame de la Sede, the beautiful Toulousaines style 11th century church of St.Lizier with it's octagonal bell tower, serene cloisters and the 18th century pharmacy - all a stroll from the apartment. The village boasts a superb restaurant in the Bishops Palace, its terrace overlooking the mountains and just across the road from the apartment is 11 place de l'eglise where you can also eat in or outside and enjoy the view and a light lunch in the summer. Also in the summer, there is another little cafe-bar which offers snacks and drinks. This sunny Garden Apartment is on the ground floor with easy access from secure parking. It has a private terrace and the apartment has been entirely renovated providing comfortable accommodation for four with two en suite bedrooms, spacious open plan living area and French windows onto the terrace. There is a good WiFi connection.

MAKE A NOTE OF THESE SPECIAL DATES; From the end of May to mid June you can take part in the annual TRANSHUMANCES EN COUSERANS and join the walks with the shepherds and herders as they take the cattle, the sheep and the beautiful black Merens horses up to the high pastures for the summer. Bring your picnic and enjoy this very traditional Ariegeoise event en famille.

AUTREFOIS LE COUSERANS - the 23rd year of this colourful recreation of the old days in the Ariege countryside with a grand parade through St. Girons You will see the traditional costumes, the old cars and farm vehicles, and plenty of cattle, horses and goats decked out for the parade. About Jane Lee-Oulton

I've been living in Africa since the late 60s and have had a house in France since 1990 and enjoyed spending many holidays exploring. In 2006 I left Zimbabwe and came to live in the Midi Pyrenees and have settled very happily in this beautiful and friendly part of the country. I enjoy the fact that friends in Europe find it easier to visit me in France than they did in Africa - and of course friends from Africa just love coming here! I've started painting and gardening, love cooking and am a regular walker and I do love the fact that there is so much going on here within an easy radius - it really is relatively undiscovered and there is lots to explore. I hope you'll chose to visit Saint Lizier and see for yourself.

Why Jane Lee-Oulton chose Ariege

Well it was the view that initially sold me. A breath-taking view across the foothills of the Pyrenees to the snow capped mountains. Then it was the garden - I have been waiting for five years to begin a new garden and now I have my garden! And I love the area for it's beauty and the calm laid-back atmosphere. And I love the fact that I can be shopping in Toulouse in an hour, or lunching in Spain in 90 minutes, in Bilbao at the Guggenheim in four hours, or I can be picnicing with friends in a high mountain meadow filled with summer wild flowers and watched by the black velvety Merens horses. If I want to be remote, I can be remote, and if I want to join the hustle and bustle of the city, I can do that too, so easily!

For me, I couldn't ask for more - the Midi Pyrenees is the best!

What makes this apartment unique

The Garden Apartment is completely independent with its own entrance and terrace and you have secure parking. There is a boulangerie in the village and its just a five minute drive or a 15 minute walk for all other shopping, supermarkets and even some stylish boutiques. There is a really good Saturday open air market in St. Girons which is a popular place to meet friends and you have a choice of three good restaurants within walking distance of the apartment in St. Lizier, including the Carre de l'Ange in the old Palais des Eveques with its terrace and panoramic views and there are plenty more good restaurants in the adjoining market town of St. Girons, but if you prefer to stay in and eat alfresco, you can cook up a feast or barbeque on the terrace and enjoy the views.

Now into our third year letting the Garden Apartment and I think we had all happy holiday makers last year! Many Owners Direct visitors have come to stay at a previous house I had in Lagrasse in the Aude, The Garden House. A wonderful apartment in a glorious setting

We had an extremely enjoyable week at the Garden Apartment. The apartment itself is very spacious, comfortable and relaxing. St Lizier is rich in history and very characterful. After days out exploring the local castles, waterfalls, lakes and caves, we loved spending the evening on the wonderful terrace and taking in the spectacular views.

Jane is a great host; she provided lots of information and was always on hand if we needed her (but was never intrusive).

We can highly recommend this property and hope to return ourselves one day.

A wonderful holiday in a wonderful location

The really striking thing about this apartment is the view from the balcony, which is just amazing, across a beautiful valley right up to snow covered mountains of the Pyrenees. That view just keeps drawing you out onto the balcony to take it all in.

St Lizier is a beautiful, historic little place too, and the market at St Girons is well worth a visit.

We were there for the walking and bird watching, and we were not disappointed. Several days we spent high in the mountains, where the views were even more spectacular, and where we were delighted to see vultures, and other smaller birds. All the walks were well marked.

The apartment was clean and well equipped. Jane, the owner, was an absolute treasure, very helpful, and if she didn't know the answer, she knew someone who did! We would love to go back some time soon.

Wonderful views

We had a lovely week at this apartment. The apartment is clean, well-equipped and comfortable with fabulous views from the terrace overlooking the Pyrenees. Jane, the owner, couldn't have been more pleasant and helpful and even organised bikes for us to hire before our arrival. St Lizier is a lovely village and there are some great restaurants, walks and bike rides in the area. A perfect place for a holiday - and there was nothing nicer than sitting having a meal looking out at the view after a lovely day in the hills. Highly recommended!

Garden Apartment, St Lizier

We had a wonderful holiday here and stayed on a few days longer than booked as we liked it so much! The accommodation is excellent - everything you need and very tasteful/restful. The views of the mountains are beautiful and the terrace area in front of the property faces the view, is sheltered and sunny, and also overlooks the pretty garden. In good weather it is lovely to open the doors from the main bedroom and enjoy the scenery and when its stormy in the mountains, its nice to pull the shutters closed and let it all pass by!

The very friendly owner lives in the apartment above and is quiet, discreet and extremely helpful. We might have felt that being in such close proximity would be a bit of a problem, but it really isn't - a positive advantage in fact.

The area allows for a mix of activities. We went for the walking and there are many possible routes to suit all levels of fitness etc. The tourist offices provide good information on walks. We found we drove to Seix and to the Bethmale valley to start most of our walks but really enjoyed the Cirque de Cagateille ( not sure of spelling) as well as local village walks (again easy to choose a route and very pretty).

Meanwhile Foix is not far and a nice town to visit. St Lizier itself is quiet-ish, interesting and has a nice salon de the plus a supermarket a few minutes away by car. St Girons Saturday market is good, although we spent limited time there.

Easy drive from Toulouse - good choice - highly recommended!

A perfect stay

We spent a fabulous week at this lovely property in the heritage village of St. Lizier, centrally located for all activities in the Ariege. A very warm welcome and clean, well appointed property, with all our needs catered for. Highlights were the newly restored Palais d'Eveques literally yards away, and the fantastic views of the Pyrenees. Highly recommended.

Changeover day is normally Saturday with arrival after 3pm and departure by 10am on the day you leave. If you need to have a different arrival and departure date and the booking period is available, please ask the owner. A deposit of 50% of the total rent is required when booking and receipt of the deposit confirms your booking. The balance is payable on or before one month prior to your arrival. Bookings will be canceled and the deposit held, if full payment has not been received two weeks before the due arrival date.
Bookings of three nights will be considered subject to availability and excluding July and August.
Prices are shown in Pounds Sterling and there is a great 10% discount on the second week of bookings of two or more consecutive weeks and an additional discount is offered for bookings over one month.
