Guestbook comments from the owner

'The house itself is lovely. We do all our own cooking because of my son's allergies and the kitchen was kitted out brilliantly. The village was great, the roads were cleared brilliantly in the bad weather, one of the farmers having a snowplough on the front of his tractor. It was lovely to see the lambs too.' Moira and family, April 2012 (our first guests)

'A very well appointed cottage and so comfortable!' Anne and John, May 2012

'Very satisfied, extremely clean and comfortable. No improvements needed. Would come back and recommend to friends.' Weekend guests July 2012

'We had a wonderful time, nothing but good things to say about the cottage - which we found warm, welcoming and equipped with everything we could possibly want. We loved the walks that we could take from right outside the cottage, and thoroughly enjoyed the excellent food at the CB Inn on occasions. Definitely a experience worth repeating in the future.' Comfortable, quiet and spacious

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Brookside for three weeks and didn't want to go home. The cottage is well furnished with a comprehensively equipped kitchen. It was very clean and felt as if it were our, sadly temporary, home rather than a holiday let. The kingsize bed is particularly comfortable and you are lulled to sleep by the brook. The location is one of the quietest of the northerly Dales villages, but still has two pubs, while nearby Reeth offers more facilities including an organic baker. Good walks from the door, if you're more energetic than we were.

We had a lovely weekend, the cottage is spacious with all the facilities and amenities you need. The hosts were very accommodating and allowed us to extend our check out time to suit us. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to get away and take in the beautiful scenery.

Home from Home

The location of this cottage is fantastic. On arrival you instantly feel like you are on holiday.

It was great for the children just watching the Farm vehicles going up the Farm Track and talking to the local farmer about his day.

The cottage is very clean and well equipped which made it ideal for cooking .The CB inn is well worth a visit , great food and exceptional service and within walking distance .(Booking Advisable).

The walks from your door are great, We especially enjoyed the walk to Reeth following the river.

There are so many places to visit without having to travel very far.

We would love to return soon

Fabulous Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Brookside cottage is a beautiful, spacious property in a fabulous location at Langthwaite, Arkengarthdale. Plenty of room and very cosy. It has a well equipped kitchen if you prefer to cook at home. There is outside space, brilliant to have a coffee/meal at the picnic table and take in the peace and quiet. There is also a seating area by the babbling brook that you can access just across from the cottage.

It is ideally placed to explore the Dales. A very enjoyable stay, with a great pub nearby , The CB Inn which serves excellent food, a little bit pricey but worth it. Also the Black Bull at Reeth very cosy and good food. We recommend this property.

Wonderful Family Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Brookside is a great family cottage ,one of the bedrooms doubles as a space for a childrens play area , also suitable for teenagers to hang out which is a big plus point ! The bedrooms are very comfortable and have wonderful views , speaking of the views it was a real pleasure to spend time just taking in the peace and spectacular sight of the moorland glowing with purple heather, cows with their calves and rabbits galore.

The kitchen is very well equipped to cook and the dishwasher always a boon. The lounge again very comfortable the only small criticism is the TV which has seen better days ,huge number of dvds to choose from also books, great size dining room with a lovely big dining table, handy boot room too.Everything as described would be happy to recommend Brookside to family and friends we will hopefully be back soon.

The CB Inn is about 15 minute walk away we found it very friendly and had a lovely meal ,interesting menu, a tad on the expensive side but worth it.The Sunday carvery at the Black Bull in Reeth is excellent.

Had wonderful week at Brookside just wish we could have stayed longer .

Spectacular location

  • 5 of 5

Four of us (two couples) stayed here for the weekend. What a fantastic place to explore the Yorkshire Dales! We had never heard of Arkengarthdale before and it's a little gem - away from the busier, more popular Dales. But it's only 4 miles away from the picturesque village of Reeth in the better known Swaledale. Reeth has everything you want on a rainy day - tea shops, pubs, art and craft galleries. And Swaledale itself offers a range of walks which contrast beautifully with those you can do from your door in Arkengarthdale. The peace and quiet when we woke on the Saturday morning was wonderful - just what you need to instantly relax. And the cottage is really cosy - at the end of a long walk, perfect for curling up in front of the open fire with a glass of wine. And for people who enjoy cooking (although there are 2 pubs within walking distance), the kitchen is really well equipped. We'll be back!

Location

From the Owner

We've been spending new year in the Dales for 20 years, since we first found Arkengarthdale. Its unspoilt remoteness and peace provides a fantastic escape from real life!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : at 50 Miles Nearest Barpub : at 100 Metres Nearest Golf : at 15 Miles Nearest Train : at 20 Miles Nearest Motorway : at 15 Miles Nearest Restaurant : at 0.5 Miles Car: recommended

The Yorkshire Dales is a place of outstanding natural beauty, and Brookside Cottage is in the most northern and quietest of the Dales.

You may never have heard of Arkengarthdale - if you have, you'll understand its attraction! It is the least known, quietest and most remote of the Dales. We think it is perhaps the Dales' best kept secret. If you love the wildness of remote moorland scenery and getting away from tourists and traffic, you'll love the contrast between this Dale and the busier, Swaledale.

Despite its rural location, we are only 200 metres from the friendly village pub, The Red Lion, which serves snacks and drinks, as well as only 3 quarters of a mile from the CB Inn with its open fires, play area, pool table and locally sourced, superbly cooked food. Both pubs will lend you dominoes or packs of cards to while away a couple of hours while sampling local beer.

Outdoor activities abound in this part of the world - with hundreds of footpaths and bridleways to be explored right from the door across open countryside and farmland.

For the more adventurous there is caving, biking, canoeing, rock climbing and horse riding - the 2014 Tour de France came within 3 miles of us! You can hire bikes in Reeth - about 3 miles away - where you'll also find our local tourist information centre. Whether you want to explore a new village or town every day, find real ale or a good cuppa, the Dales has it all. There are plenty of great days out at heritage sites, including 'The Forbidden Corner', Aysgarth Falls, Castle Bolton and Barnard Castle, where you'll also find the amazing Bowes Museum. There's also the the cheese factory and livestock market at Hawes, Richmond Castle and Georgian theatre…. or just enjoy the peace and quiet of the Dale, the views and the brook or open fire. We hope you love coming back to Brookside cottage.

Facilities

From the Owner

Brookside has everything we wanted - it's comfortable and cosy, yet with plenty of space. We love the outdoors, but enjoy having somewhere homely to come back to. We enjoy spending holidays with friends and Grandparents so it was important that our cottage had enough accommodation for them too! It's in a sheltered position yet enjoys views up and down the dale from all its windows. We rent it out to cover expenses, and we hope that guests will love the area as much as we do.
