Charming Hillside Farmhouse Near Lucca, Tuscany

Updated: 19-Sep-2016
House in Lucca area, Tuscany, Italy - Immersed In Nature, Yet Just 15 Min. to Lucca, Walking Distance to Partigliano, 1.5km to Valdottavo

Originally a working farmhouse, La Capraia sits nestled on a 6 acre parcel of green olive groves and small vineyard. It is flanked by a chestnut forest and a cool mountain stream. Life is slow and easy here. We wake to the sound of birds and we sleep to the sound of the cicadas. An inground 10m x 5 m pool overlooks the vineyard. Two walking trails into the wood depart from our property. We are conveniently located just 1,5 km walk to the lively town of Valdottavo and just a 15 minute drive to the Medieval town of Lucca.

Just fabulous

  • 5 of 5

This is an unpretentious, rustic property with a fabulous pool surrounded by wonderful scenery.

Our party comprised 6 adults, two small children and an 18 month old toddler. The accommodation in the main farmhouse was spotless, spacious and welcoming, and space was not a problem.

We spent most of our days in and around the pool and our evenings on the patio gazing up at starry skies watching shooting stars, fireflies and trying to spot the nocturnal squirrel-like dormice in the walnut tree.

We cooked pizzas in the pizza oven, barbequed and enjoyed the local wines and beers. Meals were taken while sitting under the attractive pergola which offered some welcome shade.

We had very few problems but Gina and Michel were excellent hosts and responded very quickly and positively to all of our questions.

The property is in a quiet location yet handy for all necessary amenities. The little town of Valdottavo, a 10 minute walk away, has the basic requirements, a great pizzeria/bar, a gelateria and very friendly locals.

Nearby are some lovely places to visit, we particularly liked Bagni di Lucca and the amazing bridge at Borgo a Mozzano.

We loved staying in this place and are already discussing when we would like to return......just fabulous!!!

Superb setting with charming and well furnished accommodation. We love this place and hope to return

  • 5 of 5

The owner was really helpful and went out of her way to make sure that we had a great holiday. Everything was exactly as described in the advert.

The accommodation was generous and comfortable for our party of 7 adults. We enjoyed the pool and the self-catering facilities. We had a lot of fun exploring the neighbourhood and visiting local places. There is so much to do that we neve got round to visiting Siena or Firenze.

The roads are quite narrow in parts but we managed with a large people carrier. Small vehicles would work better.

Relax in Tuscany

  • 4 of 5

We arrived at 'La Capraia' in the dark after a 6 hour delay traveling from the UK and Gina kindly met us in the village to guide us to the house and had prepared food for us which was extremely kind and thoughtful. Waking the next morning to the most beautiful blue skies and the wonderful rural setting - we seemed to spend most of our time gravitating between the pool and the terrace. The younger members of our party (18 & 20) particularly enjoyed the library of TV shows and films. We Bbq'd most evenings and even managed to get the pizza oven fired up! We visited Lucca (which is wonderful - loads of restaurants/market)on a few occasions and hired bikes one evening from near the station and cycled around the walls stopping at one or two bars.We traveled to Florence on the train from Lucca station, takes just over an hour and gets you right into centre and 10mins walk from Duomo and other sites - we however always wanted to return to the tranquility of 'La Capraia'. We would very much recommend the property,a car is essential. Rob & Jane Kennedy

Fantastic Property

  • 5 of 5

The owners are very friendly and that made the booking process very easy. Their service is first class and we were made to feel very welcome. The property is well equiped and the rooms are huge. This did not feel like a rental property,it was more like being invited into a comfortable home and the owners made it clear that we were free to treat the villa as our own. This is without doubt the best stocked holiday rental that I have ever visited. The outside space is exceptionally large and the setting is beautiful. The pool is spotless, large and has an exceptional outlook over the valley. The local village is only minutes away by car and handy for essentials and a visit to Lucca, some 15 minutes away is a must. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property, the owners are very helpful and they made our visit so memorable. If you visit this property you will not regret staying at La Capraia

You'll want to stay here all summer!

  • 5 of 5

"Having arrived in the dark, we were blown away the next morning when we opened the shutters and saw how beautiful the countryside is. We loved the house, the pool, the garden, and had everything we needed there to feel comfortable and at home. Ideally, I would have spent the whole summer there!

So thank you very much to you and Michel, and I really hope that one day we'll be able to return to La Capraia!"

From the Owner

We both loved how it was the only house on the hill, with views down to the valley and two walking trails into the woods just a few meters away from the house. It felt like our own little piece of paradise. I loved being able to walk out the door and pick fresh peaches, or figs and whip up a pie or make some jam. My husband loves the challenge that tending the vines and olive trees brings. We're certain that as soon as you arrive, you'll feel the charm and pull of La Capraia, just as we did.

From the Owner

Probably the biggest benefits we've enjoyed would be how much fun we can have with friends here. We fire up the wood oven, roast a pig or make some fresh pizza, sit under the wisteria and grape pergola and eat, laugh and relax with our friends. At night, we've never seen so many stars in the sky. Sometimes we just sit with some wine and watch the sky. In the morning, cappuccinos on the patio with the birds singing and the sun rising high over Partigliano provide moments of complete joy we don't get close to when we're in the city. We've also enjoyed being in walking distance to three different villages. We've made friends in all three!

  • Notes on accommodation: All of our windows are screened. The house is an old stone house with 2-feet thick walls that keep it nice and cool in the summer. We have installed ceiling fans in every room of the house. The master bedroom is quite large and if desired, two fold out single beds can be added to accommodate more people. Outside: Our patio comes with a grape and wisteria covered pergola, dinning table and chairs seating 8 people, a BBQ station, as well as an outdoor wood oven. We also have an independent bathroom just off the patio that serves as our laundry room. The property boasts a fruit orchard of figs, peaches, plums, apples, pears and cherry trees, which we encourage you to help yourself to. The 10 x 5 meter pool overlooks our grape vines and the valley below. Utility Room: We are trying to be as green as we can to respect the surrounding environment. Our hot water, in the summer months, is heated via solar panels. During the Spring and Autumn months we use an electric hot water heater. Heat is provided by a wood furnace. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: A full cleaning is done prior to check-in. 100% cotton linens are provided. We also provide thick fluffy American sized bath towels for the house and large pool towels for the pool so you need not hassle with bringing bulky beach towels over. Other: Access to bedroom #3 can be only be had via bedroom #4, the single bedroom that converts into a twin. As such, we recommend that bedrooms 3 and 4 be used by the same family, usually Mom and Dad in # 3 and kids in #4.
