About the property

House in Noto, Sicily, Italy - Beautiful Rural Property Only 5 Mins From Beach. Breathtaking Views Of Vineyards And Olive Groves.

Casa Modesta is unique. Winter and summer, guests will find they should never have to compromise on the levels of comfort they enjoy at home. From the joy of cooking in the fabulously well-appointed kitchen to the bliss of rejuvenating sleep afforded by the luxurious beds, everything has been carefully planned and designed to make this a genuinely five star experience. Casa Modesta is as its name suggests. It presents itself as a simple cottage which, although recently rebuilt, retains much of its original character. Modesty, however usually belies a beautiful secret waiting to be discovered and our property is no exception to the rule. Walking through the front door of Casa Modesta is like opening a jewel box. The natural neutral tones of the building's facade do not prepare you for the richness of colour and texture inside. Outside, guests can take a walk through rows of almond trees or sit by the swimming pool and watch the sunset turn the vineyards orange and purple.

About Vanessa

We live in Kent and have 3 children aged between 21 and 7. Steve, my husband, has been visiting Sicily for over 20 years for his work importing tomatoes for UK supermarkets and introduced me to this unique and very beautiful area in 2005. The area is one of the few remaining in the Mediterranean that still offers an authentic experience of rural life, almost unchanged for hundreds of years. Life in this corner of Sicily is still very much connected to the produce of the land and the sea.

Vanessa purchased this house in 2007

Why Vanessa chose Syracuse Province

The house and its five acres of almonds and olive trees offers complete tranquillity and seclusion and yet is less than 10 minutes drive to the enchanting fishing village of Marzamemi, several stunning beaches and a wide range of shops and restaurants. The house is also a great base from which to explore the architectural and historical gems of southeast Sicily.

What makes this house unique

When we started out on this venture we had some clear aims. Our first priority was to develop a high-end rental property with a secondary upside of somewhere the family could spend their holidays. Our second aim was to provide for our guests the same level of comfort and style as we find in our favourite hotels (this is not something we could readily find in rental properties in the Mediterranean). Top quality bedding and furnishings create the luxury finish inside the house and outside the glass mosaic deck level pool with stone terraces complete the five star experience. There are stunning views of vineyards and rolling farmland in every direction. Off season underfloor heating means the house is always warm and cosy and there is never a shortage of hot water for showers.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks so much for a fabulous week in your wonderful and well equipped house. Despite the very hot high season weather (36 every day) we have managed to drag ourselves away from the lovely pool and cosy house for some eating and adventures. The highlight was definitely the Scala Restaurant you recommended in Portopalo - amazing fresh raw and cooked seafood + all for €60 for the 4 of us! We also enjoyed jaunts to Noto, Syracusa and more marvellous eating in Marzamemi. We loved the shade, facilities and clear waters at Agua Beach, which is where we are going now for our last swim. Then we need to eat up our remaining food and drink up the last of our Vini Rudini wine.

Highly Recommended, wonderful retreat

We cannot recommend Casa Modesta highly enough.

The villa is in a beautiful valley surrounded by olive trees and fields and is wonderfully peaceful. It is the perfect place to hide away and relax, yet if you want to do some sightseeing and explore all the island has to offer, then it is within easy reach of local towns and cities. The outside pool area was perfect and there was some fixed shade with a new canopy over an outside sofa , in addition to the comfy sun loungers. There is also an outdoor dining area with a gas BBQ and grill, which was perfect for cooking the wonderful local fish and produce. The inside of Casa Modesta is the real home from home treat and has been furnished to an incredibly high standard, with luxurious bedding and an extremely well stocked and equipped kitchen. There were board games and books and other thoughtful touches.

The owners were extremely helpful prior to our visit and their house Manager was on hand at all times during our stay to answer any queries and there was a lovely welcome pack with fresh proscuitto and bread and even the offer of a home cooked Sicilian Supper in your villa. On the days we managed to drag ourselves away from this beautiful villa, we enjoyed visiting the baroque cities of Noto and Siracusa, which are only 40mins drive away, and there are some fantastic restaurants in nearby Marzamemi. For a change from the pool, the Vendicari nature reserve with some lovely secluded beaches, was a few minutes drive away. The drive to the beautiful island of Ortigia, at Siracusa, early in the morning was worth it to visit the amazing market, to stock up on local produce.

Our only regret was staying for one week and not two!

Perfect.

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay at Casa Modesta. The location was perfect for us. Peace and quite for the chilled days by the pool and a short drive to the local villages for amenities and gelato! We really enjoyed a day trip to Noto. But mainly spent our time having lunch in the local villages, followed by an afternoon swim or a read by the pool. Our three year old loved next doors cat too. We'll definitely be back.

A beautiful and thoroughly charming villa.

  • 5 of 5

We found the villa to be as lovely and charming as the description. It was immaculate inside and out, with a fantastic pool and terrace area. It is situated just off a very minor road with no near neighbours and was perfect for a totally relaxing stay with great scenic views all around.

The owners were very friendly and helpful both before our stay and also during our time there. We would love to go back to the villa in the future.

Lovely week at Casa Modesta

  • 4 of 5

This villa is exactly as described. Beautifully renovated and comfortable. Pool and Gardens are also a treat. We loved the local beach and fresh fish. We went to several of Vanessa's restaurant recommendations and they were all really great. Great food. No fuss and lovely locations. A visit to Noto is a must. It was our first visit to Sicily and we will certainly be back.

Charming property in good location for visiting south east Sicily.

  • 5 of 5

A great rural location with a feeling of remoteness yet with plenty of places to visit within a short drive. Eating, shopping and good beaches all within easy access. The external space was particularly nice with the paving allowing you to be barefoot between the house and the pool. Sunny and shady areas available with plenty of outdoor seating.

Wonderful, luxury hideaway in amazing area

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four loved it here. An idyllic place set in quiet, beautiful surroundings and yet within really easy reach of great beaches (5 mins) and restaurants (10-15 mins).

The property is well maintained, has great facilities, high quality furnishings and is spotlessly clean. The gardens and pool are particularly wonderful. The pool is big and deep enough for serious swimming & play. We spent hours here and miss it very much!

We spent most evenings at the old square in Marzamemi which is quite charming. Here there are plenty of high quality restaurants and bars with indoor and outdoor seating, either overlooking the square or the sea on the other side.

A visit to the Baroque town of Noto is a must. This is an easy, 30 min drive away. We had every intention of visiting Mount Etna, Ragusa, Syracuse and the Turkish Steps coast but spent most of our time in the gardens by the pool instead! Idyllic.

The owner is extremely helpful & informative about the property, the area and places to visit. This really added to the experience as we knew straight away where to head for thus cutting out any time wasted pondering & researching.

We would highly recommend this property and hope to return ourselves one day.

Fiona,

Lincs
