About David and Chris Burley

David was born in Cornwall and has happy memories of family holidays in the area. We bought the barn when our children were teenagers, having moved on from the bucket and spade phase to discovering the delights of surfing and body boarding! David is a keen dinghy sailor and enjoys messing around on the water. Chris is a teacher and loves the dramatic scenery and walks of the Cornish coastline, as well as trips to the open air Minac Theatre at Porthcurno.

David and Chris Burley purchased this cottage in 2002

Why David and Chris Burley chose North Cornwall

As an architect, David was attracted to the barn because of its double height, open plan living area and its original exposed beams. Its slighty sunken south facing garden is a sun trap. The peaceful location is an ideal retreat from busy Padstow, but close enough to feel part of it too. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we have!

What makes this cottage unique

Although Cornwall is thought of as a Summer vacation, our wood burning stove makes it a cosy Winter retreat. During the shoulder season the barn can be booked for long weekends - ideal for walks on deserted beaches and sampling local pubs. We also accept dogs for an additional fee of £20.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Nice property in an excellent location.

  • 4 of 5

Really nice property. It was clean and spacious and had everything we needed. It was in an excellent location being close to Padstow, but was quiet and peaceful. The one slight let down was the shower, very small shower head and had to mop water off floor after shower. However, we had a fantastic weekend and would definitely go again and recommend to friends and family.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay! Due to the original barn beams in the bathroom we realise the over-bath shower is not ideal. In January we are planning to have a shower room with toilet/hand basin put in the twin room downstairs, thereby making both rooms ensuite. Hopefully this will be in place if you visit us again.

Lovely clean cottage, snook away from all the hustle and bustle but close enough to enjoy days out.

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely week, weather was amazing which helped. Cottage was perfect, clean and comfortable.

Quiet location with a few other cottages.

Close to amenities and only 15 minutes drive to some amazing beaches.

Half an hour drive took us back to our favourite beach Perranporth.

Cosy week in windy Cornwall

  • 4 of 5

We found the cottage easily, though had failed to note the number of the exact property, but with a quick call to the owners, we were soon inside. The cottage quickly lost it's initial chill with the help of the wood burner and all was as the description and photos had shown. The location was very peaceful and the cottage was clean and well cared for. The only niggle we had was the shower - it was hot and powerful enough, but seemed unable to keep the water in the designated area and we ended with a wet floor each day.

Because it was a wet and cold week, we didn't attempt the walk into Padstow, suspecting that it would be too muddy, but still enjoyed its delights (including the requisite Cornish Pasties)!

We visited Truro, Redruth, Godrevy beach, Trevone Bay, Mawgan Porth, The Eden Project, Kernow Chocolate Factory (we particularly like their Raspberry chocolate bar) and walked to Wadebridge along the Camel Trail - a busy week! We didn't need to eat out, as the facilities were great and all the basics were provided, but did enjoy a lovely afternoon cuppa and cake at Mad Hatters cafe in Wadebridge. Should we head down south in the near future, we would happily stay in this lovely barn conversion again and our only hesitation in recommending it is that it might not be available when we want to stay there!

Lovely cottage in peaceful location

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely few days here in April. The cottage is well equipped and nicely presented with amazing views of the countryside. The cottage is located approx 1 mile from Padstow so very convenient whilst also being in a quiet and peaceful location.
