About David and Chris Burley

David was born in Cornwall and has happy memories of family holidays in the area. We bought the barn when our children were teenagers, having moved on from the bucket and spade phase to discovering the delights of surfing and body boarding! David is a keen dinghy sailor and enjoys messing around on the water. Chris is a teacher and loves the dramatic scenery and walks of the Cornish coastline, as well as trips to the open air Minac Theatre at Porthcurno.

David and Chris Burley purchased this cottage in 2002

Why David and Chris Burley chose North Cornwall

As an architect, David was attracted to the barn because of its double height, open plan living area and its original exposed beams. Its slighty sunken south facing garden is a sun trap. The peaceful location is an ideal retreat from busy Padstow, but close enough to feel part of it too. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we have!

What makes this cottage unique

Although Cornwall is thought of as a Summer vacation, our wood burning stove makes it a cosy Winter retreat. During the shoulder season the barn can be booked for long weekends - ideal for walks on deserted beaches and sampling local pubs. We also accept dogs for an additional fee of £20.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We enjoyed the holiday. Cottage was ideal. Super location. Everything we needed was available and woodburner was excellent - DL Nov 2011

Good location

  • 4 of 5

Property is not far from Padstow and in a quiet location with other barns. It was fine for us, our daughter and dog. The owners were easy to contact when we had a small issue and we would certainly visit again.

Lovely location, a clean spacious interior with everything one would need for a week

  • 4 of 5

Pleasant property, well stocked with everything one would need for a weeks stay so just needed to turn up with clothes, food and beach towels. A bit disappointed some the door knobs on the kitchen cabinets kept coming off and the toilet seat was very loose and so did not stand up but minor things and they did not spoil the holiday.

Glad to stay again

  • 4 of 5

This was our second visit to this property. It is a perfect size for the two of us and perfectly positioned for our visits to north coast beaches, villages, Padstow and favourite spots on both north and south coasts. The property is very good and has everything we need. We love it there and have recommended it to friends. The instructions, inventory etc are all very clear and nothing is left unsaid.

However, as before, I have noticed little things that need attention. These are:

Cleaning: Lots of dust and bits and pieces under the bed and sofa/bed downstairs. Even previous occupants notes and a post card.

Furniture: Double bed and easy chairs downstairs are held together by allen screws. These are working loose and like last time we visited, need tightening before a unit breaks/collapses.

Shower screens: would be better if curtains were used or bigger screens to stop water getting onto floor or window cill.

Switch: Power switch on wall outside bathroom is faulty and almost came out of its mounting - needs attention.

PAT: Would have expected all electrical plugs etc would have been PAT tested, but not sure if this is a legal requirement for the public or just good practice.

BBQ: non present in garden but on inventory although I didn't need one.

Garden bench: bit 'rickety'.

Overall and in spite of above, would recommend this property to anyone, very pleasant place to stay.

Owner's Response: Glad to welcome you back to Tregella. Thank you for your comments and we will address them to ensure guests have an enjoyable stay.Over the Winter we plan to add an en suite shower room to the downstairs bedroom, as the beams in the bathroom upstairs limit what can be achieved with the over-bath shower.

Lovely clean cottage, snook away from all the hustle and bustle but close enough to enjoy days out.

  • 5 of 5

Had a lovely week, weather was amazing which helped. Cottage was perfect, clean and comfortable.

Quiet location with a few other cottages.

Close to amenities and only 15 minutes drive to some amazing beaches.

Half an hour drive took us back to our favourite beach Perranporth.

Nice property in an excellent location.

  • 4 of 5

Really nice property. It was clean and spacious and had everything we needed. It was in an excellent location being close to Padstow, but was quiet and peaceful. The one slight let down was the shower, very small shower head and had to mop water off floor after shower. However, we had a fantastic weekend and would definitely go again and recommend to friends and family.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay! Due to the original barn beams in the bathroom we realise the over-bath shower is not ideal. In January we are planning to have a shower room with toilet/hand basin put in the twin room downstairs, thereby making both rooms ensuite. Hopefully this will be in place if you visit us again.
