Charming penthouse with a balcony with total privacy and lovely views over the sea, perfect to enjoy sunbathing or alfresco dining, a bedroom with views to the mountains, a mezzanine, a dining/living room, a bathroom and a fully equipped kitchenette. This apartment is in the top floor of a typical architecture building with only four apartments, one in each floor. Owing to its situation you can breathe the sea breeze and listen to the sea waves. Just crossing the street you have the seaside resort Barreirinha. Nearby there are the natural beaches in pebble “Calhau São Tiago” and “Touco”. Centrally situated in the Old Town with lovely fish restaurants, pubs, bakery, cafes, the very typical Market and all the amenities around it. No car is necessary everything is in a short walk. The Funchal promenade or the centre of Funchal is five minutes walk.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is in a fantastic position being so close to the sea and located in the historical Old Town, 5 minutes walk to Funchal centre. Lot´s of things we can do without needing a car: Sunbathes at the balcony with lovely views to the sea; Swimming just crossing the street; Quiet romantic walks at the seaside or cross the town and enjoy the busy city life; Visiting the typical market, the best day is Friday morning; Enjoying a coffee or a meal in the many coffee shops/ restaurants around or in the lovely bar downstairs Barreirinha Bar Café.

En mycket trevlig lägenhet med en härlig terrass ut mot havet. Personligt och trivsamt möblerad! Och ett bra läge i kanten av gamla stan med stort utbud av restauranger, cafeer, nära buss-stationen och den fina promenaden längs havet! Vi kommer gärna tillbaka till Elsas penthouse!

Notes on accommodation: A double bed is available in the mezzanine making the total occupancy 4. Also there is a sofa bed in the living room. WiFi free of charge. Mobile electric heaters and fans are provided for winter or summer use. A cot for infant can be supplied on request. Outside: A large private balcony with canopy, 2 deck chairs + a table with 2 chairs where you can enjoy complete privacy and a great view of the sea and the harbour. Perfect to enjoy sunbathing or alfresco dining. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen, bathroom towels and beach towels included. Cleaning and linen change is done once a week.

Problems with DJ

We booked the apartment a number of months ago and checked comments before committing. We had been to the cafe below the apartment a number of years ago and thought the area was great and the cafe a great place to watch the sunset. Around the time of our trip I checked the comments and found references to DJ's and noise on the weekends but comments said not too bad or implied only occasionally happened.

Well it turns out that every Friday and Saturday there is a DJ at cafe. On Friday he started at 7, set up in plaza in front of cafe. The noise was unbelievable - thumping heavy base beat (no vocals) and it went on to about 2 in the morning. I looked out at 1 o'clock and was surprised that there were only 4 women bouncing in front of the DJ's read light and maybe a dozen people learning against the wall. Maybe half the little tables had someone there - not a roaring success. On Saturday the DJ started by 5:30 (he was going when we arrived back from our hike). It was too much to even consider a drink on the balcony so went for an early dinner and then to the carnival parade and returned about midnight. Again few people at the DJ (3 women bouncing and maybe a few more people around). We shut ourselves into the bedroom, shut all doors and windows, put in earplugs and used a big portable fan for white noise and then read our books. I spoke to manager on Sunday and he said that there was no DJ on Sunday but one was coming on Monday.

So you have been warned. If already committed remember your earplugs.

Re: General noise in area. A few streets towards the centre there are a number of noisy bars but this part of old town in generally quiet.

The apartment is in the Old Town close to all amenities, restaurants and bars as mentioned on our advert. The bar nearby does have music at the weekends which guests are aware of and enjoy it. The Carnival week is one of the busiest, most lively week with music and parties all over the Island and especially in Funchal Centre therefore not the best time to stay in the Old Town if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday. Funchal´s Old Town, is one of Funchal´s main tourist hotpots, popular for its historical, architectural, gastronomical and artistic aspects, full of life and spirit, being the best European destination.

Lovely apartment with great view and nice location

The apartment is even better than we expected from the description and the pictures. Very good standard, nice house, amazing view from the huge balcony, and Elsa is very kind and helpful. It would be a clear 5-star rating if it wasn't for loud music until late in the night from the bar downstairs for at least two days per week. The bar and the people are nice though but within our 10 days we had the bad luck to get two "DJ nights" with loud music until 2 or 3 a.m. in the morning. Otherwise the location is perfect, walking distance to the Marina / port along the seaside, to nice restaurants and the city center. We loved it, especially having our breakfast on the balcony with amazing sea view.

10/10, perfect stay!

We visited Madeira a few weeks ago, and had a fantastic stay in the old town of Funchal.

This was partly due to the fact that we stayed in Elsa’s gorgeous apartment…

The apartment is perfectly located, and the views from all windows are stunning. It is just as appears on all the photos, if not better.

Even though it rained some of the time we were there, we could still make use of the outdoor terrace area as it had an awning that came over the top and sheltered you from the rain while still letting you relax in the sunshine. The view from the terrace was gorgeous, and it was lovely to have the shutters open in the evening and listen to the sea.

The bar downstairs was fantastic and makes the best burgers and mojitos! Having read prior reviews, we expected there to be more noise disturbing us but it was fine.

Elsa was lovely, and gave us some good recommendations of places to see and eat. We looked on trip advisor a couple of times for places to eat out in the evening, but the ones we found online weren’t half as good as ‘O Tasco’ – a little family run restaurant just round the corner up the hill from the apartment. We ate here twice during our stay – had we visited it sooner we would have probably been every night!

All in all, a perfect trip 

the grandios seaview

We enjoy our holidays in a fine appartement in the old town of funchal - 11 very nice days. The balcony was right in front of the antlantik and mountains behind the appartement.

The habor , little restaurants and supermarkets , a lot of bus stopps and the cable car you arrived in 10 min. to go. Only the noise from the bar in the evening and during the night was sometimes disturbing.

Lovely apartment in great location

Lovely clean, tidy and comfortable apartment . The bathroom could do with a renovation but other than that has everything you need for a great relaxing holiday. Elsa was a great host and explained how everything worked with lots of good suggestions and information for local attractions and restaurants.She was only a phone call away if needed and nothing was to much bother for her. I would only have one suggestion that a small fan be available in the living room for the hot weather. I would definitely recommend the apartment to friends and family and we look forward to returning. The apartment is in a lovely location overlooking the ocean and we enjoyed relaxing on the balcony watching the world go bye.

There is a lovely cafe/bar below which serves great food and drink at very reasonable prices. It can be noisy at weekends if you like your piece and quiet but it is worth it for the location. All in all a great holiday and can't wait to return. Thanks Elsa.

Great location and a comfortable home from home

A super location with very good facilities and a great view from the balcony. The flat was clean and comfortable. Our host Elsa was very helpful, reliable and friendly and gave us tips for local restaurants and activities on arrival. We would be pleased to tell our friends an family about the property.
