Character Holiday Cottage, South Vendee in the Marais Poitevin, near La Rochelle

Overview

Property

Updated: 09-Oct-2016
Cottage in Le Poire-sur-Velluire, South Vendee - Holiday Cottage With Original Features Set In Quiet Village Location, Close To Amenities

La Maison du Puits is a cottage built in the 1830s, which still maintains original features such as exposed wood beams and an open fireplace. It is ideally located for the perfect holiday, just 10 minutes to the historic town of Fontenay le Comte where you will find a variety of restaurants, weekly market, shops and supermarket. La Rochelle is just a 30 minute drive. The famous Vendee sandy beaches of the west coast are about 30 minutes away. Alternatively why not just put your feet up and relax by the pool with a refreshing drink, cook some succulent food on the bbq or dine alfresco in the garden. If you feel like some light exercise, borrow some of our bikes and enjoy cycling along the river banks and farm tracks. If that is too energetic you can take a gentle stroll down to the bird hide (500m) to see the stunning views over the Marais Poitevin and the wildlife.

Lovely, peaceful and cool gite. Very well equipped, lots of indoor and outdoor activities to keep the children occupied. Thank you for looking after us so well. The Segal Family. Aug 2012

We had a lovely time staying here. The gite has everything we possibly needed and the pool was great. We spent a fair amount of time cycling and it is great for that all over the Vendee as it is lovely and flat. Thank you to the whole Rouse famiily for making us feel very welcome. The Hook Family. A very good time was had by all

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely gite. It is so well appointed - TV wifi- and very comfortable.. We were very impressed by the fact that there was plenty of crockery, utensils , glasses etc. This is so nice - having stayed in places which only provide one plate etc per person. The facilities are excellent and although we went late late in the season, the gite was very clean and smart.

The gite is well placed for visitng the Vendee coast,- we spent one day in La Rochelle, and another on the Ile de Re. Thre were plenty of leaflets in the gite about all the various places of interest, where to eat etc. This is very helpful and saves time having to visit the Tourist offices. There are some lovely historical villages to the north of Fontenay and forested areas for walking etc. There is also a very good auberge in the village

We did spend quite a lot of time in the garden just lazing around as it is so quiet and very pleasant.

Chris and Dawn are excellent hosts who assisted us when required without being obtrusive. . Their gite gave us everything we needed to have a relaxing holiday.

Many thanks Dawn and Chris.

Great Gite in quiet village surrounded by lovely countryside.

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd stay and we have booked again for next year. The Gite is spacious and clean and has everything you need for a comfortable relaxing holiday. The pool area and garden is a great place to relax, especially after a days cycling round the lovely quiet roads enjoying the wildlife that's all around. We have stayed in numerous properties throughout France and this is amongst the best. Chris and Dawn who live onsite are discreet, but are on hand if you require anything.

Immaculate, spacious, very well equipped.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from what can only be described as one of the best family holidays that we have ever had.

We have holidayed before in France but never in a gite that is as well equipped, immaculate and spacious as this property. Our every need was catered for, and honestly we felt at home and relaxed from the moment we arrived.

We had a lovely warm welcome from Chris and Dawn, who are so knowledgeable about the beautiful area of La Rochelle and the Vendee. They were on hand to answer any questions, and had some great recommendations for days out like Puy Du Fou, The Indian Forest, also good local places to eat out of an evening etc…

Dawn and Chris maintain the gite, pool and gardens to a very high standard, but are never intrusive, so you really do feel like you have the place to yourself.

There is so much to do in the surrounding area, loads of beaches to visit, early markets, and full on active family days out. The 2 weeks we had there, we enjoyed very hot weather, reaching up to 36 degrees on one day, so coming home to the beautiful pool to relax, or sit in the garden surrounded by apple, pear and nectarine trees was an absolute god send.

The walled courtyard is a lovely place to sit out with pots of vibrant geraniums and other flowers. We loved sipping chilled local Rose, playing card and chatting out there in the evening.

We would definitely like to come back for a future holiday, and would recommend this beautiful gite to anyone of any age to come and enjoy a relaxing or full on holiday in The Vendee.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Dawn and Chris for providing such a wonderful homely gite for us to have a fantastic holiday, and we hope to come back again soon.

The best equipped Gite that we have stayed in with the warmest swimming pool...

  • 5 of 5

Positives

As stated in the review title, the Gite is very well equipped - whether this be from the kitchen perspective to toys and games for the kids to play with. The Gite was very clean upon arrival and communications via Dawn were excellent throughout the booking process to the day of arrival. Chris keeps an eye on the pool and tweaked the temperature when a couple of cold nights affected the temperature - essential when you spend so much time in the pool supervising the kids. One of the reasons to book this Gite was the 'heated' pool and it didn't disappoint. There are a couple of places to dine outside and if you wish you can use the barbecue or 'plancher' provided. The Gite is also very well located, just 10 mins from the supermarkets and the AutoRoute.

Chris and Dawn are lovely hosts, we like our own company and never found Chris or Dawn intrusive, but we knew where they were if we needed help or advice (perfect scenario for us).

Negatives

The master bedroom does suffer from road noise (the Gite I must stress is not on a busy road), but with single glazing and located just a few metres from the roadside you do hear vehicles at night, sometimes getting the odd glare from their headlights and they do at times go past at quite a pace.

From a layout perspective you can't see the swimming pool from the Gite, I wouldn't leave the kids unattended at anytime when they are in the water, but going back to the Gite to prepare lunch for example does mean that you can't keep a watchful eye on the kids even at the side of the pool. Just something to consider ,as for me a review should help people to understand the layout of a property that the pictures don't always illustrate.

I don't agree with paying for the Gite to be cleaned upon my departure. This is in the contract that you will sign when booking and only applies to one week rentals. However, the cost of a weeks rental is the same whether booked for one or two weeks so why penalise the one week rentals? The cost is 41 Euros and with departure expected to be no later than 10am on the day of check-out, it's not possible to clean to Chris and Dawn's high standards, as well as packing the car without getting up at 6am on the last day of your holiday. Plus it's my holiday and cleaning the oven and bathroom isn't part of what I find relaxing.

The WiFi is poor.

The negatives are all part of a review, would I book this Gite again - absolutely, would I recommend to friends - absolutely.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your 5 STAR review, we are really pleased you all enjoyed your holiday. Just to clarify some of your comments. The cottage is in a small hamlet with minimal traffic and there is the option of closing the shutters on the double window/door to the front of the cottage at night. Also, every window is already double glazed. The pool is gated and for safety reasons we do advocate that young children are never left alone for any reason. Yes we do offer an end of stay final clean, as an incentive for our clients to book with 2 weeks with us.

Great Holiday, lovely location, great hosts.

  • 5 of 5

We travelled from South Wales to the Vendee, for our summer holiday, wanting to make a complete change from the usual flying holiday to somewhere warm, and to try a more relaxed style of vacation, with our family, consisting of 4 adults and 2 children.

We chose Chris and Dawns' property in L'Anglee close to Fontenay-le-Comte as it was within easy driving distance to La Rochelle, our main focal point for this vacation, and from the photos and descriptions on this site.

Finding the Gite is so easy from the main routes down through France, and the drive was fine too, French roads are a pleasure compared to the UK!

The Gite was lovely, with a large lounge area, 3 bedrooms, shower room, full kitchen facilities, cable TV etc, and the most important factor, thanks to our hosts, it felt like ours for the whole fortnight we spent in July.

There is a great little paved area outside the back of the house, with a table and parasol which was just nice to sit and chill with a coffee, or cool beer.

The garden, which again you have full access to, is huge, with a fantastic sized pool, looked after each day, we all thoroughly enjoyed this to the full, and it was so nice not to have to claim your space with towels on sunbeds, and all of that malarkey. The garden also had a full table and chairs to use, plus Barbeque, table tennis, bikes if you want to use them.

The local town of Fontenay-le-Comte was a lovely place for strolling around, with a river running through the centre, plenty of shops and cafes' too. There is also a very large Hyper market, which was frequented.

Each day a lady from the local Boulangerie, would pull up outside, selling locally produced bread and cakes, lovely!

La Rochelle is fantastic, plenty going on, good shops, plenty to see and do, we'll be going there again for definite, as we didn't see enough of it. Across from La Rochelle is the Ile de Re, which is a beautiful island, accessed by a stunning bridge with a reasonable toll (16 Euros), Well worth a day out as the beaches are very nice there too, with plenty of choices and none too busy.

We spent our last evening in a local village which was holding a night market, and basically everyone turns up, break out the tables and chairs, and have a really communal, friendly evening with music, food and very nicely priced local wines, marvelous.

So overall a very nice place to stay in South West France, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a similar holiday.

Perfect, It had everything we needed!

  • 5 of 5

We had a very relaxing time staying here. The cottage was very clean and had everything we needed, including games, books and toys for the children to play with both inside and outside. Dawn and Chris were very approachable and helpful. Our three children enjoyed playing in the pool and we all really enjoyed the lovely garden. We had fun cycling in the local area and it was a good location for day trips and visiting the vibrant local markets.

We will be recommending this place to our friends. Thank you for having us!
