La Gromillais is a small hamlet (us and one neighbour!) ideally situated between the coast and Dinan. Once a working farmhouse and outbuildings, the gites, Les

Chenes, Le Pommier and Le Noisetier, are set around a gravel courtyard. Each gite is newly renovated, and we've kept the character while adding a little luxury. The garden has swings and a play area, with access to a huge cider apple orchard beyond, providing plenty of space. Each of the smaller gites has an open plan ground floor while Les Chenes has two large reception rooms downstairs. Freeview t.v. in all gites. Free Wifi available. All properties are non-smoking.

Open plan ground floor with a large dining table, cosy sitting area with woodburner, and kitchen arranged along one wall (well equipped with electric cooker, fridge, dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine, kettle, etc.). Upstairs are two bedrooms, a double and a twin room which is large enough to also fit a folding bed or cot for a third child if needed. Modern luxury bathroom with shower over full-size bath, loo and handbasin. Electric radiators throughout.

About the Owner

We are Nic and Lizzie Mehta and our children are rugby-mad Harry (13) and anything arty Lucy (9). We came to La Gromillais after 7 years in Hong Kong, looking for space, beauty and tranquility in an interesting place where our children could become fluent in French and have a gentle childhood. A primary school teacher in London many moons ago, Lizzie has taught English to three year groups at her childrens' school while Nic commuted from the UK at the weekends. We love walking our two dogs in the countryside and on the beaches, exploring local towns and improving our French! Although La Gromillais is no longer our permanent residence, we return as often as we can, and we hope guests who come will enjoy the gites and discover this gem of an area. It really is a fabulous place for a holiday.

Being a Dorset girl I have always yearned to be 'far from the madding crowd'. Promoting itself as 'La campagne à deux pas de la mer', this area is in the heart of the Brittany countryside but 'two steps' from the sea. The towns of Dinan, St. Malo and Dinard, each having its own distinctive style and atmosphere, are close by. Getting to the area is easy by ferry, train or plane. Having looked at over 30 properties, we chose La Gromillais (the 1st one we had seen!) for its location and also for having such a welcoming south-facing courtyard around which the buildings are arranged.

Coast/Beach:

You will be spoilt for choice of beach here. It is only 15 minutes driving to the nearest one but the coastline offers a variety of sea and river beaches with clean, golden sand and endless rockpools, more and more uncovered as the tide goes out. The town and village beaches offer nearby facilities (restaurants, activities, life guarded areas, loos etc.) while others are wilder and more adventurous! There is plenty of free parking and most beaches are seldom crowded even mid-August.

Travel:

We are in a rural location so a car is essential. Ferry crossings from Plymouth, Poole, Weymouth, Portsmouth (we can offer discounts on some ferry crossings). By car, St. Malo is only 30 minutes away, Caen is 2 hrs away, Cherbourg and Roscoff are 2 1/2 hrs away. Good road links and little traffic make driving easy. Dinard airport is 20 minutes away (car hire available).

Distances:

Languenan - 2.4 kms, Corseul - 5 kms. Dinan - 7kms, St. Malo - 20 kms. Rennes - 60 kms. Mont St. Michel and Cancale are only 45 minutes away.

Further Details:

Dinan is 5kms away with supermarkets, banks, petrol station etc. There is a market every Thursday. Walk along the massive medieval ramparts, explore the old town with it's mix of traditional and modern shops and restaurants. The vertiginous medieval Rue Jerzuel, lined with beautiful buildings, connects the town to the river port where an ancient bridge crosses the river. There are walks along the river in both directions. To the south, Lehon boasts the ruins of a medieval crusader castle, and a stunning abbey next to an outdoor heated public swimming pool. Browse the shops in Dinard, distinctly chic in atmosphere, or buy a picnic at the thrice-weekly market to enjoy on the beach a stone's throw away. Enjoy the views of smart villas on a walk around the undercliff. On the other bank of the Rance is the famous walled city of St. Malo. Its rich citizens built great mansions on the riverbanks upstream (Chateau Montmarin is one to be visited). Along the Rance, several pretty villages are worthy of a visit, many with restaurants next to sandy river beaches. One has a tame seal!

Along the coast is the magnificent Mont St. Michel, Cancale, the sweep of the beach at St. Cast or the more intimate beaches of the St. Jacut peninsular and Lancieux. When you want a change from the beach, visit ruined castles, canal walks, a stud farm, cider museum or take a guided kayak tour. Rennes, Combourg and Fougeres are in easy reach, as are many inspirational gardens and chateaus. Cycling in Brittany is a breeze thanks to the region's network of green ways, with four major green way cycle routes that interlink to form a network.

Several local depot-ventes (half way between junk shop and antique shop) are there for hunting down that authentic french souvenir.

Bookings must be for a week or multiple of weeks only. If you book 2 consecutive weeks for a holiday to be taken in Autumn/Winter or Spring Season you get 10% off the price!
Arrival from 4pm onwards, departure by 10am.
Late arrivals can be accommodated.
Notes on prices:
Prices include all linen and towels for the gites. It also includes a statutory local 'taxe sejour' of 0.33p/day per guest over 13 years of age.
We can offer guests a discount of up to 10% on the cost of ferry prices on Brittany Ferries. Please ask for details.

Payment is by bank transfer. Guests are asked to pay a non-refundable booking deposit of 30% of total cost to confirm their booking. Balance and refundable security deposit of £150.00 is payable no later than 8 weeks before the start of your holiday.

From the Owner

There are three gites at La Gromillais. Grouped around the courtyard as they are, guests often mingle with children playing together. It's a great place for a large family or a group of friends who want to be on holiday with each other but don't necessarily want to be in the same house all together. It is also easy to be private and secluded, with both the gardens and the courtyard to chose from in which to relax.

Minimum number of nights stay is 7. Outside: The big courtyard has lots of parking space (in the barn or open area) and room left over for a game of boules, relaxing in the sun or in the shade of the willow trees. The two smaller gites share a private lawned garden with apple trees, patio area, picnic tables with chairs, loungers, garden umbrellas and a barbeque. For our younger guests there are swings and a small play area for making mudpies! Les Chenes has its own large garden with lawns and borders. Oak, beech, pine, peach and fig trees offer shade and there is plenty of space for children to run around in. A hidden play den in the long border will keep young children happy! There is access to a large cider apple orchard and you can say hello to the horses who are sometimes in the field. There is a lovely circular 2.4km walk from the gates, along country roads and tracks. Look out for the banks of primroses and wild flowers in spring and summer, and pick blackberries in autumn. We regularly see hares, kestrels and herons.
