Brilliant holiday house

  • 5 of 5

There is always a bit of anxiety when booking a new villa in a new location for the first time. When we arrived, late at night by taxis (which the owner had arranged for us!) we were completely blown away. The house was clean, well equipped and attractively laid out. The accommodation was perfect for the 8 of us, including our 3 teenaged/adult children and 2 of their partners, plus my brother. We were never cramped or crowded and found the terraces ideal for chilling out with a book or a game as well as ideal for meals.

The shops were much closer than we had expected, and the tavernas were the ideal distance away; barely a couple of minutes but because they are down the hill and behind a row of houses there was no noise at all. The beaches were lovely and although at times they were pretty crowded they were never too crowded to allow us to enjoy sitting there and making the most of the warm Mediterranean sea. The blue flag status was a bonus we had not expected.

We were able to access lots of local beauty spots with a combination of taxi and local bus, and the information provided in the villa was most helpful. In advance of our stay the owner gave us a great deal of help and was always prompt in his responses. We felt he went above and beyond what we would have expected.

We were a bit concerned about all the news from Greece before we set off. Once there we felt we were in another world, and no worries intruded to bother us during this amazing trip. We are now plotting to try to get back to Sea View!

Great week

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in Kalives. The villa is very spacious, modern and clean, with a fantastic terrace and views of the sea. It's a short walk from the sandy beach, bars, shops and restaurants. Would love to go back

Stunning

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here based on other reviews. Agree completely with other reviewers. This place is fantastic - have already booked return visit next year. Owners so sweet and helpful.

House is beautiful - with amazing balconies on both levels. The upper level also has a great sitting area and fridge/sink as well - so you could almost live up there. Silent at night- can't remember when I last slept so well!

It is literally a few minutes all to the beach. From the balcony there are sea views - the sea actually looks further away than it really is. It is literally a quick right turn down the street and you are right at the beach with all the cafes and bars. 3 minutes tops to the beach.

Kalyves is a nice family resort - much classier than the awful places that British tourists usually frequent. There are about a dozen or so really nice cafes/bars on the main beach strip - and most of them have awnings and decks right on the beach with tables and free sun loungers. Icarus was one of our favourites for the fresh fish. Beach busy but plenty of space for everyone. Mostly families with children.

We rented a car for only three of the days we were there. Flisvos on the main street offered a discount even before we asked €125 reduced to €60 for a Peugot 107. Both staff we dealt with were absolutely lovely and offerred great advice about where to go and what to do.

The palace at Knossos is a must see. Lovely drive round the coast. You can park for free right next to the palace - just before it are paid car parks and touts will try to lead you into a paid car park by making it look like an official car park. Ignore them!

Absolutely fantastic house. Loved Kalyves. Recommended.

“Idyllic location and villa”

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful modern villa retains many of its original Cretan features and charm whilst boasting high tech showers and a modern well-equipped kitchen. It has four double bedrooms, two large indoor living areas and two large balconies both of which have a large table, chairs, umbrella and views over the bay. It is the perfect location for a family holiday and can easily accommodate two families or a large group of friends. The sandy beach is a two-minute walk down a gentle incline where there are a variety of friendly and welcoming tavernas with very reasonably priced quality food and wine. My husband and I have travelled extensively throughout the Greek islands and have holidayed in Crete on a number of occasions during the past thirty years; this was a first visit to Kalyves and such a pleasant surprise to find the Cretan charm of old still existing in this most beautiful of destinations. Thoroughly recommended.

Location

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Excellent sandy beaches. The eastern beach is the most popular because it is in the village. The western beach is very quiet and about one km away from the village.

Kalives is a real village, not just a tourist invention and this is part of the charm of the place. The countryside around Kalives is one of the greenest in Crete and the backdrop of the White Mountains is beautiful.

Travel:

Chania airport is about 20km (30 mins) from the villa and Heraklion airport is about 160km (2 hours drive). Car hire isn't necessary but there are plenty of car hire places within Kalives and they will drop the cars at the airport for your convienience.

Further Details:

All shops, supermarkets, taverna's and banks with cashpoints are within walking distance of the villa
