About the property

Villa in San Feliciano Near Magione, Umbria, Italy - A Peaceful Location, but Just A Five Minute Walk To The Lake And Its Beaches, Bars And Restaurants.

Villa Azurra features reclaimed traditional materials such as stone and chestnut beams, and is set in a beautifully landscaped garden, studded with mature olives and wild flowers, with barbecue area and infinity pool. Almost every room in the house has spectacular views of the lake - perhaps the jewel though, is the loggia – here you can dine or just stretch out, cooled by the breezes drifting up from the lake. The villa is a two minute drive from the lakeside village of San Feliciano, which is between Torricella and Maggione. Here you can buy all your basics, sample a variety of restaurants and bars, hire a scooter or catch a ferry these go regularly to the islands or the other picturesque villages around the lake. This is a perfect starting point for exploring the delights of both Umbria and Tuscany, with Perugia (and its airport), Assisi and Cortona all within a half hour drive; and within easy reach are Siena, Montepulciano, Orvieto, Todi, Florence, and even Rome.

About Hazel Murray

I am an english woman and I have lived in Italy for 6 years. I love it! I love the food and wine, the great weather, the fantastically beautiful countryside, and perhaps most of all, the friendly people and their relaxed way of life. I live in Cortona, and quite by chance came across the this plot with its possibility of rebuilding an old ruin - but it was SO special I had to do it, and thus sold my house in the UK to fund the project.

Why Hazel Murray chose Magione

I have made the villa and the pool as beautiful as the plot itself - with its ancient olives and amazing views of the lake, whose colours can change from hour to hour, but is always wonderful to look at. A holiday is such an important thing - and my main ambition is to make sure that anyone who stays at Villa Azurra has the best holiday they can.

What makes this villa unique

Its all about peace and relaxation, and those wonderful, wonderful views.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"A wonderful villa, beautifully decorated and appointed, and with spectacular views. The pool and garden are so fantastic we didn't really ever want to leave; but then again there is so much to see and do around the lake, or further afield. Us older ones loved the tranquility of the summer nights, the younger ones were able to walk down to the bars and even the odd disco by the lake. You couldn't wish for more."

James and Deirdre

'The layout and furnishings of the villa have clearly been done with much love and great attention to detail. Absolutely everything we could possibly have needed was provided.' Particularly appreciated was all the information on the local area and attractions further afield. The welcome basket with wine, fresh fruit etc was a really special touch, and added to all the basics already provided in the cupboards, meant that we didnt have to rush out and shop immediately.' Heather Taylor

'The views, the pool, everything - really fantastic.' George and Fiona

Notes on accommodation: The villa has been built with a view to bio and eco credentials. It has solar panels (with back-up boiler), high levels of insulation, and locally sourced and bio/eco stone, blockwork and plaster. Pillows and matteresses are anti-allergic. Cooling on the upper level is provided by the natural lake breezes and the many windows - all of which have inbuilt flyscreens and outside shutters; this level has direct access to the garden and driveway at the back and sides of the house, including the main terrace and swimming pool. The lower level, being partially set into the hillside remains cool naturally - this level has direct access to the garden and driveway at the front of the villa. There is an internal staircase, and two sets of external steps. As well as a folder of information on places to visit locally and further afield, there is also a wide selection of books (fiction and guide books), boardgames and films on DVD. Hair dryers, a safe, and a First Aid kit are provided. Outside: The villa was built on the ruins of an old structure within a terraced olive grove, and the gardens have been carefully landscaped to retain the natural feel, with several mature olive trees, wild flowers and herbs. There are different seating areas, shady or sunny, with garden furniture provided. The barbecue is at the back of the house, mainly in the shade, near the kitchen door, and just adjacent to the main terrace awhich adjoins the stunning infinity pool. The pool, which is private, is 8.5 x 4 m (26 x 13ft) with a shallow end and stepped seating, it is partially solar heated, which extends its use in spring and autumn. The villa is private and tranquil, being reached by a private cul-de-sac road, and then its own road which serves only two other houses. Because of its position the garden, and thus the villa, actually has a double aspect over Lake Trasimeno, and you can sit in the loggia, the sitting room, the bedrooms or even the pool and watch the sun set behind Isola Polvese. Utility Room: Washing machine (7kg), drying rack, iron and ironing board. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Property is cleaned immediately before each rental. Extra cleaning can be arranged. Other: On the lower floor, as well as bedroom 3 and its ensuite bathroom, there is another sitting room, with two large settes which can be used for additional sleeping. This floor has direct access to the garden and driveway at the front of the house.

Lovely villa with stunning lake views

  • 5 of 5

Villa Azurra was the perfect choice for our two week stay in Umbria. This comfortable house is fully equipped and tastefully appointed. Kitchen utensils, bedding, towels -- everything you need for a home away from home. The three bedrooms (two of the bedrooms are ensuite) are roomy and each has a great view of the lake. Each bath has a large luxurious shower with great water pressure and plenty of hot water! Located near the charming fishing village of San Feliciano, there are shops and restaurants nearby. It is also convenient to the Perugia-Siena Raccordo for easy access to Perugia, Tuscany and other areas of Umbria, making it a perfect location for day tripping. Hazel, the owner, was there to greet us on arrival, made sure we were comfortable and was available to answer any questions throughout our stay. She really cares about her home and her guests and that made our stay all the more special. Thank you Hazel.

This is a great retreat, beautiful sunsets over the lake, infinity pool, comfortable, all you need and nice location for touring Tuscany and Umbria. And Hazel is a wonderful host, checking in to make sure all is well and giving us wine, fresh garden veggies and flowers.

Reluctantly revealing this secret haven

  • 5 of 5

Ours was a last minute booking, chosen blind on a recommendation; we couldn't have done better had we pored for hours over websites. The villa is a delight, beautifully and comprehensively equipped, very spacious and with the most spectacular views. It is also ideally situated for a ten minute walk or five minute drive into the charming and unspoilt fishing village of San Feliciano.

Hazel is a perfect host who is there whenever you need and who has clearly poured love into building and maintaining her lovely property. Accommodation is well thought out with good space, particularly in the master bedroom and ensuite and the kitchen dining /day room and its wonderful lake views and logia for warm evenings and spectacular sunsets. The pool is not huge, but perfectly good enough for decent swimming and cooling off and the garden is very pretty with it's old Olive trees, rocks and shady corners. The surroundings are peaceful and there are plenty of wonderful excursions to make very close to hand. This is Italy as I dreamed it. I thoroughly recommend Villa Azurra.

Heaven in Umbria at Villa Azurra

  • 5 of 5

Part of me wants to say that Villa Azurra is rubbish because I want to make sure that it's not too busy to accept my booking! However the fact that we've just completed our third summer holiday in this beautiful retreat says it all. We love it - the house, the views, the village, the lot. The villa (built with love and panache by the owner Hazel) is off the beaten track on a hillside and offers stunning views of Lake Trasimeno. Eating, sitting, musing on the dining terrace with those views is so relaxing and soul feeding. The villa is a one mile walk from the village of San Feliciano, an authentic working village. Not picture postcard but charming with great facilites - a baker, butcher, pharmacy, supermarket, icecream parlours and a number of restaurants. Our favourite is Osteria Rosso di Sera -a hop from the villa- which offers an interesting menu and a reserved quirky decor that wouldn't be out of place in Hackney or Islington. Oh and on expert experience the area around Lake Trasimeno offers first rate mountain/off road biking. Would we go back? Of course we will!

Beautiful villa in outstanding location

  • 5 of 5

This villa has everything one could wish for: peaceful location with outstanding views over Lake Trasimeno, yet within easy reach of San Feliciano village and restaurants. It is very well equipped, tastefully decorated throughout and the beds are supremely comfortable. The owner, Hazel, was always on hand with friendly, helpful information. We particularly enjoyed visiting the nearby islands of Polvese and Maggiore, Cortona and Siena by car and Florence by train, as well as lazing by the pool. We would have no hesitation in recommending this villa to friends and relatives and will definitely be returning there ourselves.

The nearest (lake) beach is five minute walk downhill, along with a couple of beach bars and a restaurant. More of the same, plus windsurfing and boating, is available in San Feliciano which is a two minute drive (or easy walk) away; or you can take a ferry to one of the islands or several lakeside villages. You can buy your basics in the village, where there is also scooter hire. The lake is warm, and one of the cleanest in Italy, although it does have a muddy and sometimes weedy bottom!

The nearest airport is Perugia, 34 km, its still small and easy and is served by Ryanair out of Stansted. Other airports are at Rome 142km, Florence 146km, and Pisa 200km. Carhire is available at Perugia airport, but there is no railway station, although there is a coach service to the the city. Personally I believe that a car is essential, both to access the villa, (the nearest station is about 3km away), and to make the most of all the fantastic locations near and far.

So much to see - where to begin?

There is the lake itself, apart from its serene beauty, it's famous for one of Hannibal's great victories over the Romans; the lake was even larger then, and the battle raged between Tuoro and Ossaia. Both Byron and Wordsworth have written about it – its older name being Thrasymene.

Lago di Trasimeno has three islands, one where St Francis went on retreat and built a chapel to give thanks for survival of a rather choppy crossing. Assisi itself, the white city on the hillside is, of course, internationally famous as the birthplace of the same San Francesco, who founded the Franciscan religious order in the town in 1208. 46km.

Perugia is a very beautiful lively hilltop city, a major centre of medieval art, and also well known for the Umbria Jazz Festival in July, and the Eurochoc festival in October.

Only a ten minute drive away is the border with Tuscany, with even more fascinating fantastic locations. There is Cortona - the beautiful Etruscan town, featured in Frances Mayes' book 'Under The Tuscan Sun', and the film of the same name. In the first week of August is the internationally renowned Tuscan Sun Festival, with which she is still connected. Cortona too has a link with St Frances - a magnificent monastery built around the cave he occupied for many months. 23km.

Then there's stunning Montepulciano - a major producer of food and drink; wine connoisseurs consider its Vino Nobile among Italy's best. 43km. Or perhaps you would like to visit Siena – the drive alone is splendid; the city is famously home of 'Il Palio' - a horse race like nowhere else, between the 17 contrade (sections) of Siena, is run once in July and once in August, in the Campo of Siena, the unique shell shaped piazza at the centre of the city.
