About the Owner

We bought this villa to make it into a wonderful family home which we use for about half the year with our children and grandchildren. We chose this unique location because it feels like living in a rural idyll with no traffic or aircraft noise: just the sweeping landscape of valley, sea and the splendour of the ‘baous’ behind us. However, we are only a few moments away from the bustle of Vence and we have the enormous benefit of Nice airport so close that we can get here as often as possible! For family reasons we now stay here mainly outside the summer months so we like to let others enjoy it as much as we do!

Simply died and gone to heaven

  • 5 of 5

Wow... is about all our party of seven could say when we arrived at this picture perfect Villa. John & Lynda are exceptionally lucky people to own this totally magical property with the best views I have ever experienced.

Our birthday celebratory week was perfect in every way from start to finish, with John and Lynda providing excellent details for our arrival and ensuring that their house manager, Isabelle was on hand from start to finish... What a lovely lady she is too !!

This is more than a 5 Star, with tastefully decorated rooms throughout and so much attention to detail, we wanted for nothing. It's ideal for families with younger children also, even with its own little swing park, slide and toy box. The pool is truly delightful, set in beautiful grounds with views to die for !!

Only a short drive to the centre of town, Vence has such a pretty old town and plenty of supermarkets on the outskirts for stocking up on the essentials. It's a great central place to drive out and explore some of the nearby medieval villages, with a great bus service too.

With Nice only a straightforward 30-40mins away, Villa de Cougnet can't be recommended highly enough if you're looking for a spacious, stylish, magical, tranquil home from home.

Thank you John and Lynda, you made our holiday so perfect.

Glorious villa; the best we have ever stayed in!

  • 5 of 5

We found your villa simply wonderful; state of the art in so many ways - not just Lynda's wonderful art! The pool and the views, of course, were magnificent but the detail you went into with interior design and the little touches (such as tubes of toothpaste and good quality shampoo, sun cream, antiseptic cream) added to the feel that we were staying in top notch accommodation. We all agreed it was, in fact, the best holiday we have ever had. The location, being so close to beautiful villages and restaurants, was another bonus.

A beautiful Villa

  • 5 of 5

We were really impressed by Villa le Cougnet from the moment we arrived. As others have commented, it is so well laid out with the kitchen leading onto the balcony/bbq area along to the pool and terrace and back into the spacious living room. The villa is very well equipped, far beyond our expectations, in terms of personal touches such as the children's toys, games and books and the facilities in each room/bathroom. The grounds also contribute a great deal with the play and boules areas. John and Lynda left a great deal of clear helpful information in the bookets/placards and were also on hand to contact. The housekeeper was very efficient and professional. The view is absolutely beautiful. We loved our week long stay and would love to return in future.

Outstanding !

  • 5 of 5

We stayed as a family for 10 days in June 2016 and had a wonderful relaxing holiday , the villa is outstanding in its presentation. It was so well equipped with everything you could possibly require and also extremely clean and comfortable .

There were 2 young children with us and great fun was had in the outdoor play area and also with a selection of toys within the house . An added bonus was the fact that the pool had an alarm system fitted so it offered peace of mind to those responsible for the children.

Views from all areas of the house were stunning , particularly in the evening as the sun was setting and we were well entertained on the terrace by a few local frogs and fireflies going about their business.

The owners were immediately responsive to any questions we had prior to and after arrival and offered useful advice to some in our party who drove from the UK and I thank them for their support .

We have no hesitation in giving this villa the highest recommendation and would happily return again at our earliest opportunity as we had a wonderful time.

"This is our favourite place in France!"

  • 5 of 5

"You could spend your life looking for a place like this, I'm just glad I found it now"

Our favourite place to holiday is France and this is our favourite place in France! ..this was actually a quote from my 22 year old son. We had extremely high expectations from the pictures and the description on Owners Direct we were actually looking for a place in Provence but stumbled across this villa and it just had to be the one.

We are well travelled and have stayed in some fabulous places but from the moment we arrived, all of our expectations have been surpassed. The views from the terrace alone are worth the rental, it is not cheap but it is worth every penny. The property is beautiful and the furnishing is very tasteful (you can tell it is owned by a couple with artistic style) - the layout of the villa just flows naturally .. The kitchen opens out to the main terrace and 'chimney BBQ' which works perfectly .. The pool ( which is a great size) is just a few steps further. Laying on a lilo in the pool looking up at Baou des Noirs (the mountain above the villa..at 675 meters not sure if it's a mountain or large hill) is so tranquil. The living floor is open plan with large viranda doors off the lounge lead to the terraced dining area and pool area so that when you are inside you feels like you are outside, it so bright and airy. The bedrooms all have patio doors onto different terraces. The grounds are befitting a 5 star hotel (all to yourself!) with compartmentalised garden areas all with their own seating / tables. The pool is framed on one side with very mature palm trees , and a patio area overlooking Vance, across St Paul de Vence and to Cagnes Sur Mer and the Mediterranean Sea beyond , other other side by the face of Baou des Noirs.

The villa is very private and not overlooked at all. The villa is so perfect that we (and I'm sure all guests) treat it like you would your own property... Everything looks so new and perhaps it is. I am conscious that this is such a glowing review I just want to confirm that I do not know the owners however John, who I dealt with via email is exceptionally helpful and easy to deal with. I would like to thank both John and Lynda for allowing us to stay at this wonderful property - we will certainly be back ... I almost deleted this review to stave off competition for future availability. Le Fin.

Location

From the Owner

When the time came for us to buy our own villa in the south of France we always knew that it would be in Vence. We had always loved Vence and the surrounding area because it has such a wonderful climate and is so close to all the important places in the region but also has its own rural and urban identity away from the summer crowds and congestion elsewhere. As well as the medieval city with its lively markets, galleries, cafés and restaurants the whole ‘Vençois’ area is steeped in history from ancient times to the modern period when it became famous as the ‘City of Arts’. The airport and railway stations are close by and the delightful markets and small shops are complemented by modern supermarkets and even a shopping mall a short drive away. We really have the best of both worlds!

Further Details:

The local history of Vence is fascinating, with its origins in the pre Gallo-Roman times and you will be surprised to find authentic Roman stone tablets outside the Cathedral (the smallest in France!) alongside the Provençal squares and buildings. By contrast, on the inside is a mosaic mural by Marc Chagall.

There are twice-weekly markets in Vence, lots of small local shops and hairdressers, and modern supermarkets selling everything. You can fill water bottles from the fresh spring water that runs constantly from public taps around the town.

You will need a car to make the most of the area as we are 370m above sea-level (hence the views!) with some steep hills towards the mountains. If you enjoy driving through a spectacular landscape you should not miss the roads up to and around Le Col de Vence, where new car models are frequently seen being filmed against its stunning backdrop.

WALKING / HIKING: A footpath next to the villa leads directly to the hills and mountains above Vence where you will find various trails and some amazing waterfalls. There are many other walking routes close by, including the famous and mysterious Col de Vence.

ARTS: The Matisse Chapel is a short walk from the villa and there is plenty to inspire the art lover in Vence, the ‘City of Arts’, with the Château de Villeneuve (contemporary art museum) in the centre and many local artists showing their work in their studios. The Maeght Foundation at St Paul de Vence has an extensive, world-famous collection featuring Miro and Giacometti. MAMAC is the main contemporary art museum of Nice and there are museums dedicated to Picasso at Antibes and Vallauris, to Matisse and Chagall in Nice, Leger in Biot, Bonnard in Le Cannet and Renoir in Cagnes-sur-Mer, all less than an hour away.

MUSIC: There are jazz clubs in Vence and various concerts in the town and surrounding area. In the summer, Vence hosts the hugely popular ‘Nuits du Sud’ concerts with performers from all over the world.

Facilities

From the Owner

Even in January it is warm and sunny, the garden is full of life and the house is calm and peaceful. It always amuses us when visitors come for the first time: whether it is the postman or an old friend coming to stay, everyone will break off from their greetings, turn to face the sea and, for a moment, remain silent except for an involuntary “Wow!” On a clear day we can see Corsica. Some days we take our bikes to the coast or take the hardly-known footpath at the end of our garden and walk undisturbed into the hills towards the source of our local river with amazing waterfalls and fish swimming upstream – even salmon! Then back for a dip in the pool and lunch on the terrace with a glass of rosé – heaven! But in five minutes we can be in town buying our bread and oysters …
