18th Century Coach House In Dales National Park, With Garden, Views All Round.

Overview

Property

Updated: 28-Nov-2016
House in Coverdale, Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire, England - in Tiny Dales Village, 1 Min To Village Pub, 7 Miles To Market Town.

This magnificent grade ii listed property has been refurbished to the highest possible standard and sits in the heart of Horsehouse, a tiny village in a hidden corner of beautiful Coverdale in the Yorkshire Dales national park. Dating from the beginning of the 19th century, it is thought to have been a coach house and subsequently a dwelling house and shop. Luxuriously appointed throughout, heated by a low carbon emission geothermal heat pump, this spacious cottage has four large bedrooms and two bathrooms on the first floor and an enormous fitted kitchen with two ovens, hotplates and long pull-out dining table. Two adjoining sitting rooms can separate kids and TV/DVD watchers from pianist, readers, board gamers and socialisers or hermits of other descriptions. This cottage stays warm throughout the year with underfloor heating beneath replaced original stone, and has stunning views from just about every window.

About the Owner

We are an unassuming, middle-aged, London-based couple with a small child, for whom coming to own Covercote has been one of the best things to happen to us. My partner Sylvanus' London wood workshop produced every piece of furniture and much of the joinery you see here, all done with strict adherence to the style of the originals. Professionally and personally this three-year project has been Sylvanus' baby and coming-of-age, and would have been unthinkable without his dedication and all-round perfectionism from start to finish. All credit for its high standard of comfort, design and finishing must go to him.

Amazing views. Standard of fitments was better than anywhere else we have stayed before. Everything was catered for. Quite luxurious!

Mrs Thomas, Eastbourne, August 2012

Spacious accommodation, super comfortable beds, picturesque setting and a lovely kitchen in which to prepare our own meals. The icing on the cake was the lovely piano. It was used a lot for piano and oboe duets when it was raining!

Mrs Refausse, Basingstoke, July 2012

There was lots of space for a large group of various ages. The cleaning lady was helpful and by our experience keeps a spotless property. I would think this is perfect for Xmas or New Year.

Mr Spencer, York, June 2012

Despite poor weather, property was very well equipped and very homely.

Mr Pearson, Slough, June 2012

Great Holiday Home

  • 5 of 5

This is a great location for an extended family holiday, the provision of baby gates at the top and bottom of the stairs makes it ideal for toddles. The layout of 3 interconnectind downstairs rooms gives penty of space whilst still being able to supervise youngsters. Thcooker is so large all the family meals can be cooked at once and everyone can enjoy sitting down together at the large table.

place of excellence

  • 5 of 5

We have just spent a fantastic family weekend at Covercote with our children and grandchildren - a surprise celebration for my husband's 70th birthday. We have stayed at many holiday cottages of varying standards - none of which came near to matching Covercote. The house was spotlessly clean and fresh and the character of the place was wonderful and quirky. The space and light were amazing. The kitchen, in particular, was superb with huge windows revealing spectacular views to die for. It was equipped with everything we could possibly need, including a huge induction hob and two ovens. The two sitting rooms were ideal for the mixed age group, with woodburners for colder days. The garden was ideal for the children with the River Cover less than 10 minutes walk across the fields.

From the garden listen to the sound of circling curlews and the bleating of new lambs. Stand on the elevated terrace when night falls to hear the calls of owls and marvel at the star filled sky - the ultimate stress relief therapy.

Do treat yourselves to a meal at the Foresters Arms in Carlton 3 miles away where you will receive a warm welcome and good food in a friendly atmosphere.

We would certainly recommend Covercote to anyone - a perfect house in a perfect location. What more could you ask.

Location

From the Owner

We came into a quarter of this Grade II listed, early 19th Century property in a very poor state of repair, following the death of a relative, and were so struck with its location and potential that we pooled all our worldly resources (and more) to buy up the remaining quarters. The transformation to their present standard took over two and a half years, not including the lengthy period of consultation with the Dales national park planning office. During this time we came to love this period house and landscape more than we could have imagined, so different from the tempered southern English countryside where I grew up. Reaching it from London by M/A1 or train has proved easier than expected, and nothing surpasses the sight of the seasonally changing moors surrounding the house.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Barpub : at 50 Metres Nearest Train : at 20 Miles Nearest Motorway : at 15 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : at 2 Miles Car: necessary

Travel:

Covercote is 20 miles from the north/south A1/M motorway (Bedale). For Durham Tees Valley Airport, drive north and leave A1/M at Junction 57, then join the A66, signposted Darlington, Teesside. Airport is 6 miles east of Darlington on A67. Though there are buses between main towns and a scenic vintage railway, exploration of the Yorkshire Dales and access to shopping towns from Covercote requires use of private or hired car.

Distances:

Covercote is in the tiny village of Horsehouse, in Coverdale, a relatively undiscovered corner of the Yorkshire Dales. It is eight miles from lively market town Leyburn, 20 miles from the A1/M1 motorway at Leeming Bar, 35 miles from direct rail route into Kings Cross at Northallerton. It’s also around 35 miles to Darlington, 55 to York, and about 65 miles from Leeds. It’s less than two hours to east coast beaches and a similar distance westwards to the Lake District.

Further Details:

Aysgarth Falls is a well-known picnic destination with gentle hiking through woodland, past Lower, Middle and Upper Falls along the turbulent river – and a scenic 30 mins drive over the moor. The equally dramatic Hawdraw Force waterfall is just outside Hawes, a pretty town with a Dales Museum and abundance of cafés, ten miles to the east of Aysgarth.

A breathtaking drive from Horsehorse down the valley through Braidley village will take you over a high moorland pass to Kettlewell, in the valley below. From here, continue to bustling Skipton, with its famous medieval castle and full range of shops and cafes; or take a left towards Leeds.

Older kids and anyone with a taste for the bizarre will find The Forbidden Corner, 15 mins drive away, fascinating and hilarious. An ingeniously conceived gothic theme park, love it or hate it, no-one finds it easy to forget. Younger children will love Big Sheep and Little Cow, a children’s farm and soft-play centre in Bedale with a difference. The farm tours are as hands-on as it gets, they have a great range of animals to meet, and the youthful guides entertaining and highly professional. Vintage train buffs and anyone who enjoys scenic, leisurely journeys should take a trip on the Wensleydale Railway, currently about an hour’s route one way from Lemming Bar through Bedale and Leyburn to Redmire.

Newby Hall, Ripon was the model for Jane Austen’s fictional estate Mansfield Park. This splendid residence dates from the 1690s and a visit is highly recommended.

Richmond is another picturesque town. The Arklemoor Riding Centre offers spectacular pony treks. Darlington's Dolphin Centre is good for rainy days with kids; a fantastic swimming pool/leisure centre complex. York has a historic cathedral, sophisticated shopping and the popular National Railway Museum.

Facilities

From the Owner

Urged on by Sylvanus we have taken a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to modernise Covercote completely, while retaining its original features. Staying at Covercote, for us, feels like a guilty indulgence; every time we think, is this for real?! What have we done to deserve this?! The stunning views, the faultless underfloor heating (all year round, powered by eco-friendly ground heat source), the swish bathrooms, expansive modern plain-English kitchen, outdoor patio with barbecue, gorgeous period bedrooms; original beams, floorboards, fireplaces, stone flags; cosy sitting rooms, study, piano. I could go on. Ample living and sleeping space, luxury and period atmosphere, all in a glorious setting. Our house Covercote has it all.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The house is heated by a ground heat pump, which provides under floor heating throughout the ground floor, and in the master bedroom and the bathrooms. There is a constant 300 litres of hot water available with a temperature of 49 to 52 degrees. The heat pump monitors both the internal and external temperature. When the outside temperature is above 18c, the pump will shut off, but will continue to monitor the outside temperature. Covercote is about 95% airtight, so feel free to open windows and doors; this may be necessary at night. Outside: Front and back gardens with underground water feature! Large patio via kitchen french windows with large garden table, chairs and modern barbecue unit. Utility Room: A utility room accommodates the heat pump, as well as sink, toilet, washing machine and dryer. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Clean bedding, towels and linen are provided. The property is cleaned thoroughly between each weekly booking. In the case of multiple-week bookings, a weekly cleaner/laundry service is available on request. Other: The old pantry has been requipped as a cosy study, with functioning broadband PC and landline phone. A utility room with sink, housing the heat pump, has a large, modern washing machine and dryer for guest use.
