Rated number 1 on Tripadvisor for the area, Royal Oak Cottage is right on the sea front of the Conwy estuary and is built against the 13th century castle walls of old Conwy town. The cottage is of historic significance and has been owned and associated with some quite famous people of the past. About the Owner

My partner Becky and I are huge fans of the coast, scenery and places of significant historical interest. Add to that our enjoyment of local traditional market towns and friendly people and you will understand why we fell in love with this Conwy holiday cottage. We would like to live here but work commitments keep us living in Cheshire, about 60 miles away from the cottage. Conwy has been voted into the top 20 best places to live in the whole of the UK. Cheshire is nice but not as nice as Conwy, but heh, you cannot have everything in life! If you are lucky enough to find that your preferred dates are free and not already booked up, then fantastic! We promise, along with our cleaning team, to make your stay as welcome, enjoyable, memorable and as smooth as possible.

Owner's Response: Hello John Many thanks for taking the time to write your welcome review and for contacting us again to book for next year! It is more than a pleasure to welcome you back to add more beautiful photos to your collection from this year. The panorama over the river and mountains around the cottage changes every day due to the weather coming off the Irish sea so you could take 365 photos from the cottage front door and never get the same one twice. Until next year enjoy your Christmas and New Year. All the best. Chad & Becky

Perfect place to start our vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the house for 3 nights and had an amazing time. The location is perfect and it was pirates weekend so there was a lot going on and to top it off it was also the Wales soccer game which they won! Our family of 6 were able to easily spread out in the rooms and we enjoyed exploring Conwy, the pubs and hiking Snodonia national park.

What a find!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights, as a group of adults going to a wedding a few miles away. The location is fantastic! It's right on the quay, meaning it's quiet overnight & in the morning; but also right in the town for all of it's amenities. The kitchen was fully equipped and easy to navigate. Little things like dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid & dish cloths/teatowels, soap in the bathrooms, were all provided. The cotton bed linen and towels were all spotlessly clean, as was the entire cottage. We have recommended the cottage to other people & would love to come back another time with our children. Thank you!

We really enjoyed our stay at Chad and Becky's cottage it was everything we hoped for clean, comfortable, ideally situated and tastefully decorated. As a family of 8 we were very comfortable and everything we wanted was at hand, Chad and Becky have thought of everything and it was home from home. We will be returning again to this delightful cottage and have recommended it to family and friends

Great cottage in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a one week stay at Royal Oak Cottage and enjoyed every minute. The cottage is spacious, very comfortably equipped and was spotlessly clean. It is meters from the water edge, it was lovely to hear the water and watch the boats. It is also very central for Conwy town, the shops, pubs and restaurants not to forget the wonderful castle. Within fairly short travelling time are fab places to visit, e.g. Anglesey (don't miss going for a 'rib ride' in the Mena Straits it was brilliant), Snowdon, Llanberis Pass (must be one of the most beautiful places on Earth) and Beddgelert. We will certainly be returning.

From the Owner

Life can sometimes deliver an unbelievable stroke of luck. Along with the castle, the most visited place in Conwy is the Smallest House in Great Britain. Whilst visiting, we noticed Royal Oak Cottage on the quay, which happens to be just two doors away from the smallest house, was up for sale. A once in a lifetime opportunity was upon us. The opportunity to buy a seafront property (sea is 5 strides away), surrounded by a mostly intact 13th century Edward I castle, on the edge of Snowdonia national park, within 25 metres of an historic market town and within walking distance of a 3 mile long beach. That would have been enough, except that we discovered that the cottage was more than 400 years old, was Grade II listed, was in a conservation area and was once a Fishermans pub -The Royal Oak Inn. Of course we bought it!

Activity and Interests

Nearest Airport : Liverpool John Lennon at 40 Miles Nearest Barpub : Liverpool Arms at 100 Metres Nearest Ferry : Liverpool Cruise Terminal at 45 Miles Nearest Golf : Conwy Links Golf Course at 1 Miles Nearest Train : Conwy Railway Station at 300 Metres Nearest Motorway : M56 at 45 Miles Nearest Restaurant : More than 15 within 200 metres at 150 Metres Nearest Ski : Llandudno Dry Ski Slope at 5 Miles Nearest Beach : Conwy Beach at 100 Metres Car: not necessary

Coast/Beach:

You are only 5 metres from everything you could wish for regarding the coast and beaches! Outside the front door is the first small beach and the quay. Turn left outside the front door and 3 minutes walk away is a 1 mile riverside walk to the yacht marina that takes you past your second larger beach just 100 metres away. It is only a 20 minute walk to the marina and another 3 minute walk past the marina will take you onto an enormous sandy beach that stretches all the way round to Penmaenmawr - approx 3 miles of beach. And there is a lot more beach and coast than this.............

Travel:

The nearest international airport is Liverpool followed by Manchester. Liverpool is approx 45 miles away and Manchester about 90 miles away. The nearest railway station is within 5 minutes walking distance at Conwy and connects to the main railway network via Chester. There are fast Virgin trains to Chester from London. Once at the cottage, car use is not essential but handy if you want to explore further afield into Snowdonia. There is an Avis car hire outlet in Llandudno which is 1 mile away.

Distances:

Old walled town of Conwy is a 1 minute walk. Also Conwy has many festivals, exhibitions and parades throughout the year. Conwy castle is a 5 minute walk. Sychnant pass is 1/2 mile away. Llandudno centre for shopping and children is 4 miles. Snowdonia national park 5 miles. Many other attractions within 10 miles. Betws-Y-Coed 10 miles, Electric Mountain 20 miles, Snowdon - highest mountain in Wales 20 miles. Anglesey, former home of William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge 30 miles.

Further Details:

There are various supermarkets within 2 miles of the cottage and a Spar convenience shop within 5 walking minutes in the town. The town has everything you would expect from a small to medium sized town. There are a number of traditional pubs including the "Albion" which specialises in real ales and the famous "Liverpool Arms" just a little further down the quay. There are many traditional cafes and restaurants to choose from that are within a 5 minute walk. Conwy is full of interesting shops and generally does not allow "chain stores" so it retains an old fashioned charm about it. In terms of outdoor activities, you have too many to mention. The most popular though are cycling, walking, kayaking, kite surfing, sailing and golfing. In terms of indoor activities, you have art exhibitions, craft fairs, library and a whole host of similar activities.

CAR PARKING

There is a free car park 20 metres away on Lower Gate Street which has about 12 spaces but it is first come, first served and it is the most desirable car park in Conwy. After 6pm though, you have a very good chance to get one space there, maybe two. Failing that, there are 3 more cost effective car parks with relatively cheap night time rates from just 50p that are only 4 minutes walk from the house. During the day (between 9am and 6pm) they vary from £1 for 1 hours to £4.50 for 8 hours. Overnight parking from 6pm to 9am is just 50 pence. Meanwhile here is a link to the nearest car parks with map and rates listed http://www.conwy.gov.uk/doc.asp?cat=5360&doc=20726&Language=1

Facilities

From the Owner

The holiday benefits are too long to list in just 2000 characters but here is a snapshot from a very long list of things to do and places to see in Conwy and the surrounding area. Sleeps up to 8 people. River Conwy estuary literally outside front door. Castle wall forms back garden boundary and main body of the mostly intact Edward I castle is just 250m away. The famous Liverpool Arms pub is 50m away, Conwy town is literally a 2 minute walk with lots of traditional shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and gift shops. The first beach is just 50m away and the marina with hundreds of yachts and sail boats is just 200m away. The whole of Snowdonia National Park is on your doorstep with the gorgeous Sychnant Pass into Snowdonia starting just half a mile behind the house. There are far too many mountain climbing and walking opportunities to list and the drives are stupendous for those who prefer to explore by car. Llandudno is across the bay with lots of shopping and children's attractions not to mention the pier, the great orme, ski slopes, ancient mines and more! Three high class golf courses within 3 miles of the cottage. Thomas Telford's 1826 suspension bridge and the National Trust toll house 500ms away. Within easy reach by car or train are countless more famous tourist attractions including Anglesey (William & Kate’s former home), Betws-Y-Coed (waterfalls), Blaenau Ffestiniog (slate mines), Portmeirion (TV set), Beddgelert (Legend of Gelert), Caernarfon (Castle), Llanberis (Snowdon). I could write much more but I am not allowed any more characters by this website!

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Everyone is welcome including families, couples, friends, single sex groups, children and a maximum of two well behaved pets at no extra cost. Damages will be chargeable so please do not leave pets, children or drunks alone or unattended! This holiday cottage is absolutely ideal for special interest groups of all kinds and provides an ideal base for a myriad of activities. Too many to list in fact! Royal Oak Cottage is almost exclusively demanded as a holiday home but has also been used for wedding guest accommodation, a central location for entertainment professionals, family get togethers, short term let for house moves and a place to stay for visits to relations in the Conwy/North Wales area. The size, location and convenience of the amenities make it suitable for brilliant holidays and short breaks but also many other accommodation needs. Outside: Outside the front door you are directly onto the quay and the harbour front. On days when there is a high spring tide, you may be only a few steps from the sea! At the back there is a small yard/outdoor space that is enclosed by a towering 5ft thick 700+ year old castle wall! Because of this, there is no rear access to the yard except for exceptionally good climbers. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels, linen, bath mats and tea towels are included and will be clean and in place on your arrival. These are for your use during the whole of your stay. You will not be disturbed by us or the cleaning team during your holiday. Other: The dining room has a traditional dark wood dining table with seating for 8. An open stone fireplace is next to the table and both the living and dining rooms are heated by large traditional ornate cast iron radiators. Both rooms have sea views.
