House on Polo Ridge, St James, Barbados, Caribbean - Quiet Location And Set In An Acre Of Mature Garden On A Ridge Overlooking The Beautiful West Coast.

Five bedroom villa (sleeps 10/14) with own pool and wonderful sea views of the west coast one side and a beautiful polo field on the other. Set on a ridge to catch the cool breezes it has a wonderful one acre mature garden and is on a private cul de sac, perfect for peace, quiet and families. Our local manager can organise anything you require from car hire to nannies to wheatfree cakes! The closest beach is four minutes drive at Paynes Bay, well known for the turtles that congregate there and a few minutes walk from Sandy Lane. The house is open and has all the furniture and items you need for a comfortable holiday and for relaxing and entertaining. The kitchen is large with an eating area looking onto the garden, perfect for younger children having an early supper. The pool has a shallow end with seating which is a great area younger ones.

About Fiona Blackley

I am British but grew up on the island and still visit regularly to see family and friends. My husband and I have owned the house for 20 years. As well as living in the house for two years ourselves with our three children and having numerous holidays there, it has more recently been rented long-term to a few families on work postings to the island.

Why Fiona Blackley chose Holders Hill

It is close to the beach and the highways and towns and yet it is peaceful, quiet (being on a private, dead end road means it is very safe for children), cool and open. Children seem to love the house - young ones always love the open courtyard in the centre which acts as a central roundabout for racing around the corridors. The mature garden is so peaceful and twice a day the monkeys normally cross the lawn quietly on their daily route to wherever they go! The garden is mature and has a large mango tree, as well as cherry and lime and mahogany, African Tulip, Ficus and Flamboyant trees.

What makes this house unique

It is across from the first polo field in Barbados and in the polo season it is lovely to watch the matches and practices. (The season is Dec through to May). The polo field is a great spot to run or walk around and is surrounded my trees, looks pleasant and reinforces the feeling of space. Holders House, across the polo field (owned by the Kidd family) now host a wonderful organic market of fresh products every sunday morning. It is close to Sandy Lane for the golf and also very close to some of the top restaurants eg. The Cliff. Daphne's is two minutes in the car at the bottom of the hill. Paynes Bay for swimming, where the turtles seem to congregate, is four minutes away by car. At Paynes Bay one can hire all the beach paraphanallia - loungers, boats, skiing etc.

Notes on accommodation: Bedroom 3 can have two set of bunk beds for four children or just two singles. Bedroom 2 which can be accessed from the main corridor or the master ensuite is perfect for very small children and can have two single beds in it or a cot. The internal living room has a double sofa bed which can accommodate two people as an overspill for short periods of time. There are only 3 kings sized beds in the property and Bedroom 2 and Bedroom 3 are set up more as childrens rooms. Outside: Large mature garden with mango, lime and cherry trees. Private pool with gazebo with outside fridge for drinks. Barbeque. Pool loungers. Car port. Utility Room: Washing machine, tumble drier, ironing board and iron Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen included. Cleaner once a week. More often by arrangement. There is a local house manager who can organise any extra requirements.

Beautiful location and views

We had a fantastic time in cornucopia. The location was fantastic as were the views. To be picky- The security was a little daunting with padlocks everywhere but after a couple of days it just came naturally and it was good to feel secure! It was a shame there was not a table and chairs big enough for us all to sit round for dinner, so we split up. ( there was 11 of us) Some of the mosquito nets had little tears in and a socket in the second back bedroom was split. Some of the sun loungers were a bit tired. The positives- fantastic location and views. We enjoyed the garden with monkeys, lizards, bats and fire flies. The resident cat was so sweet. The kids nick named her cookie and we think she enjoyed our company! We hope others will give her some love and attention. The house has a nice lay out with different seating areas and spaces. The pool is lovely for a cool off . The staff were very friendly and did an amazing job keeping the house and gardens tidy. The air conditioning units were very efficient and not too noisy. The garden was beautiful and I enjoyed sitting at the end in the evening watching the cruise ships leave Bridgetown. Polo was on when we were there which Is literally a 5 second walk away. We sat on the roof of the club house and watched whilst sipping prosecco. We miss cornucopia and we are grateful for our holiday there. We are sure others will love it too! Owner's Response: So pleased you had a good holiday. I have spoken to my house manager and the socket and mosquito nets are being fixed. The dining table by the kitchen seats 10. The outside table seats 12. We will however re-look at the seating arrangements. The security feels like an issue because of having to use padlocks and not just be able to close a door but the upside is the house feels so open. A difficult one to solve! I was unaware of a cat! We would love to host you again someday. best wishes

Beautiful location

Cornucopia allows a large group on a budget to enjoy a holiday in a spectacular part of the island that would ordinarily I’m sure cost far more.

It really is a unique area to stay having the polo pitch outside your door and the stunning matured garden and sea views out back.

We loved the house, it’s amenities and the spacious lay out. We had three generations of family staying ranging from 25-80 years and everyone enjoyed it.

The monkeys were an absolute delight and one day they visited our garden on mass. The excitement we felt having these fascinating animals literally hanging out with us was superb!

If you’re looking for a highly maintained brand new property this isn’t Cornucopia. It’s a little tiered and rustic and has its very own colonial style charm. If this keeps it affordable let’s hope it doesn’t change. You feel your in a lived in home not a squeaky new purpose built condo and we all liked that.

Fiona is a very caring thoughtful owner who helped us through a tricky time whilst there, we experienced a burglary that was just one of those things that can happen anywhere. Fiona supported us really well and even offered us cocktails at the famous Cliff Beach Club.

Please take note of Fiona’s advice regarding belongings. You are vulnerable when you first arrive, disorientation and tiredness makes for ideal opportunism. There is a safe use it immediately you arrive!

Despite our set back we would go back to this wonderful island and to Cornucopia in a heartbeat. Bajan people are superb (take real time to chat with locals) as is their unique island.

Comfortable family home with lots of character

Our extended family of 10, including 4 children aged 3-7 had a lovely 2 week stay in Cornocopia. It is a large, well-appointed and well-used house - rather old-fashioned - with large air-conditioned bedrooms and many sitting and eating areas - perfect for multi-generational families with different eating and sleeping schedules. The pool is especially well-suited for children, in partial shade and with a shallow area. We saw two polo matches in the grounds just across the road which was a special treat, complete with cucumber sandwiches and champagne. The garden and sea view are lovely. Parking is ample and a car is necessary to get to the nearest beaches. May was a lovely time to visit - do not believe the Internet weather forecasts which reportedly have been hacked to show rain every day - actually we had only 1 day of rain in 2 weeks of a most enjoyable stay.

We had a lovely family holiday with an age range of 8 to 80 - it was perfect for what we needed.

The villa is in a fabulous location with a lovely pool with views of the sea from the garden.

We were a large family group and chose to eat in most evenings (with the help of a lovely catering lady). The kitchen was very well equipped and leads on to a lovely veranda area with a large table where we had our meals.

The garden was lovely and much fun was had in the pool - there was a wide variety of garden tables and chairs/loungers and a great BBQ. Sunset drinks on the lawn are highly recommended.

The villa really spacious and was perfect for us and we can't wait to return.

Brilliant location, lovely open plan villa

We had an amazing stay with family at Cornucopia for our wedding. Both the owner, Fiona, and the villa manager, Simon, were very accommodating, whether that was recommendations for services, food, or getting to know the villa.

The villa is on Holders Hill, a beautiful part of the island, right next to the polo field, which is a great day out! We hired cars, but you can get around pretty easily on the local buses. You are in walking distance of a few beaches and restaurants and a short bus / car ride away from a lot more.

The villa is open air, spacious, well maintained and has everything you need. We comfortably had 10 adults and 1 toddler there and didn't feel tight on space. It isn't a super modern property, but for us that added to the charm.

The outside space is brilliant! There's plenty of room for sunbathing near the pool, and loads of space beyond that. We did yoga outside under a beautiful tree and had a wedding ceremony in the garden, overlooking the sea. Just stunning!

Overall a fantastic stay and we wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Thank you Fiona and Simon!

Four minutes drive by car to Paynes Bay which is the closest beach well known for swimming with the turtles. If walking, it is about 12 minutes to the beach down hill - so longer coming back. Buses can be caught on the coast road going north or south very easily. Taxis rank also at bottom of hill.


About a 40 minute drive from Grantley Adams airport. All travel arrangements while on island can be organised through the local manager.

50% of the total rental price is payable on booking. Money transfer costs must be paid by client renting property. A security deposit is also payable locally. Full payment is to be made 8 weeks before arrival date. Full payment for the Christmas and New Year period must be paid 12 weeks prior to arrival.
