About the Owner

Having "escaped" our hectic life in the Thames valley we love our simpler Cornish life.

We aim for our guests to enjoy this magical peninsula as much as do so we will spend time with you on arrival finding out what you really want from your holiday. We then recommend pubs, restaurants, walks, activities and attractions to match what you enjoy.

Ensconced in hamlet life we celebrate the old customs of the land:wassailing the apple trees, pancake racing, digging for cockles(trigging), harvest suppers, solstice barbecues and Christmas and New Year parties.

We sing with The Cadgwith singers-sea shanties and old Cornish songs in pubs,on beaches and harbours Gary races wooden gigs and does Coast watch duties and Sandy oil paints, weaves baskets and takes to the stage with The Gweek Players.

Lovely break

  • 3 of 5

We had a lovely time. Sandy and Gary were very friendly and always on hand to advise on dog-friendly places to eat, places to go, and walks. The location was very rural so be mindful of narrow roads when travelling. Lots to do locally. The only thing was that the holiday let is advertised as having a hot tub, which is one of the reasons we chose this place, but upon arrival it was noted we had to pay £20 each time we wanted to use it (which is something that wasn't put on the website) so I found this disappointing.

Owner's Response: Our own website, which most people click through to, details the fact that there is a charge for the hot tub. We choose to keep the holiday rental as low as possible and charge for therapies and the hot tub as not everyone uses them. (rentals that include private use of a hot tub are considerably more expensive than ours) The wood fired hot tub uses 3 large sacks of firewood to heat it and about 3 hours of labour hence we charge a fee. We would of course have explained this at the time had we had any idea this was an issue during the many conversations we had with our guests who told us they were having a fantastic time.

Perfect little retreat

  • 5 of 5

I wanted somewhere quiet to relax and write and this was perfect. The converted barn was well equipped and comfortable. The owners knew I wanted peace and quiet and so kept their distance, though their company was lovely when I went to them. Most of the time, the only sounds were the birds.

A short walk to the sea and a short drive to great places to eat.

Lovely to go to bed and be able to look up at the stars too :)

Definitely planning on going back.

Location

From the Owner

We chose The Hen House as our home for the peace and quiet so far off the beaten track, the stunning views and a simpler lifestyle much closer to nature. The Lizard peninsula has huge areas owned by The National Trust and Natural England,is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and almost the entire coastline is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for the flora, fauna or geology. We enjoy walking on the rugged western cliffs but prefer to live on the sheltered eastern side of the peninsula close to the delightful Helford river. We aim to keep it as unspoilt as it is today whilst ensuring our guests have the best holiday ever.
