About the property

Cottage in Myddfai nr Llandovery, Offroad secluded location, footpaths to mountain & village at door

Beiliglas Barn is a recently refurbished two bedroom converted barn in a quiet part of the Beacons. Sleeps four. It is comfortable and light, with many character features including flag floors, white stone walls, oak beams and vaulted ceiling. Underfloor heating and wood stove ensure it is cosy in winter.

The barn is in a rural setting 100m from a minor road. It is across the yard from the owner's house, but is quite private. There is a secluded garden in the rear. A public access path from the door leads across farmland directly to Myddfai Mountain and the ranges of the Brecon Beacons beyond. The historic village of Myddfai is a 15 minute walk on quiet roads or across fields (or 3 minute drive). The nearby town of Llandovery is 3 miles away with a supermarket (open till 10PM) and a good range of specialty shops and services. Ideal for couples, and families wanting to mix a lovely rural location with visits to local attractions. The cottage has been graded 4 stars by 'Visit Wales'. See note on dogs below. Cottage is no-smoking.

Guests have said that they appreciate flexibility with booking, as I am able to offer two and three night breaks. I also offer late 'checkout' IF no guests coming in straight after your visit, so time for a relaxed breakfast and walk before heading home on a Sunday afternoon.


Dogs are welcome in the cottage. There are stone floors in the main rooms.

Please note, the cottage is next to fields with sheep, and there is a large unfenced pond on site. The garden is not enclosed, so dogs need to be on a lead. As is common with holiday lets, pets are not to go on beds or sofas, or be left alone in the cottage. Please also bring bags to clean up dog mess.

There are a few woodland walks nearby where dogs can go off their leads.

About Janice Lewis

We purchased the property in 2010. We spent a year refurbishing the holiday cottage, combining modern convenience while retaining the cottage's character. We live in a farmhouse on the property, but have designed the cottage to give privacy and a quiet experience for the guests.

We are happy to offer advice about the area. We are keen walkers, and have prepared a series of walks from the cottage. Let me know if you are interested in anything in particular, and I will see if I can point you in the right direction.

We have stayed in many holiday cottages over the years and hope we have put our list of 'likes' and 'dislikes' to good use: comfy beds, sharp knives, hot showers, warm when the weather turns cold, and flexibility with booking dates.

The local community hall in Myddfai Village is becoming very popular for weddings, as well as other celebrations and events. Lesley and the team do a great job getting the word out about what a great venue it is, and many guests stay in the cottage. Do mention when booking if you are with a wedding for a special luxury bath gift from Myddfai Trading Co - a local social enterprise giving work opportunities to adults with learning difficulties.

Last year, I was happy to donate short cottage stays to a couple of great charities, and very pleased that considerable funds were raised for 'Freedom from Torture', 'Cancer Research Wales', and Earthquake relief in Nepal. This year I am supporting Street Child, and chiropractor treatment in Haiti.

Why Janice Lewis chose Carmarthenshire

We love this part of Wales, which combines beautiful countryside, clear skies, peace and tranquility. While you feel far from crowds, it is easy to get to, being a short drive from the A40 and nearby Llandovery. It is also well placed to visit the Welsh coast, castles, the Brecon and Cambrian mountains, Hay-on-Wye, the Gardens of Carmarthenshire, and many other attractions.

It is a farming community where both Welsh and English are heard. Welsh learners are made welcome too.

The area has a fascinating history in the 'Physicians of Myddfai' and the legend of the 'Lady of the Lake'. The local village hall has lots of information about the area, and friendly volunteers in the cafe/craft shop.

For those that want a bit of city life, Swansea is 1 & Cardiff 1.5 hours. Cinema in Carmarthen

What makes this cottage unique

If you enjoy walking or cycling, you have some fantastic countryside on your doorstep.

The cottage is close to the village. The Myddfai Village hall/cafe is open 6 days a week (5 in winter) to pop in for tea or lunch. It is ideal accommodation for those attending weddings, receptions or parties in the village. The Hall was featured in the recent BBC 'Village SOS' series. There is a lovely craft shop which features unique local crafts for all budgets.

The property has underfloor heating, so is comfortable in winter and will be warm on arrival. Guests can programme heat themselves.

The wood burning stove in the main room makes it extra cosy. Welsh wool quilts are provided in the bedrooms.

The cottage is all on one level, with parking at the door if you like.

Notes on accommodation: Accommodation comprises two good sized bedrooms, with good quality beds and linen. The cottage can be set up with two double beds, or double and two singles. Each bedroom has a wardrobe, and there is a large five drawer dresser in the twin room. There is space in the twin room for another single bed at no extra cost. The bedrooms are at the rear of the property and look out onto the private garden with lovely views to fields, a small wood and mountains beyond. French doors from the main room also lead out to the garden The location is very quiet and peaceful. Note on dogs: Well behaved dogs are welcome, but there is easy access from the unfenced garden to adjacent fields where sheep usually graze. There is also a large but not deep pond on site. So the property would not be suitable for unleashed dogs or dogs that like to explore. As is common in holiday lets, no dogs please in the bedrooms or on soft furnishings; and mess should be cleaned up. Outside: Paved patio with bistro table and two chairs leads to a shaded private garden with full size wooden picnic table. Portable BBQ and herb garden for guests use. Rotary clothes line. There is a large pond and stream on the property. The cottage is close to a stile leading to public right of way across fields. The cottage looks out onto grazing sheep, with lovely views of the ridge of Myddfai Mountain beyond. Secure locked storage for bikes is available. Also a tap and hose for cleaning bikes. There is plenty of parking. It is dark at night as there are no street lights or neighbours. You may hear owls or other small night creatures. I don't keep chickens so no foxes to worry about. Sensor lights are activated upon approach, and there is a light outside the front door. However, possible to see very starry skies on clear nights. Utility Room: There is a small annexe attached to cottage for recycling, BBQ and other equipment storage. A secure lock up for bikes is also available. Plenty of coat racks and space for muddy boats on the quarry tiled hall entrance in the cottage. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bath and hand towels, and good quality bed linen included. Property cleaned between guests, included in cost. Extra towels and linen can be provided for those staying over a week. Travel cot. Basics such as dishwasher tabs etc. provided. Other: French doors from the main room lead to patio with bistro table and private garden. Large shaded picnic table in the garden. Guests are welcome to sit by the large pond. Children can 'pond dip' or run around the 'maze' herb garden.

Terrific welcome - clean & tidy and had everything that you could want

Located on the edge of the Brecon National Park, you can walk out of the door and straight up some 440 metre hills with glorious views. The Barn is comfortably furnished with all the extras including every item in the kitchen. Tv & wifi etc all worked well as did the underfloor heating. Looking forward to a return visit.

Very quiet and peaceful

This is a real gem of a place to stay.

I can confirm everything that others have said about how lovely the cottage is. It is one of the quietest places I have stayed. Janice is very friendly and quick to answer any problems.

The only issue we had was very weak and intermittent wifi which I needed to stay in touch with elderly relatives. Having spoken to Janice she says she is looking into solving this, but there were several hours at a time when we had no signal

Just wonderful!

We were looking for a place to get away for a few days somewhere remote in the Brecon Beacons. Beiliglas was perfect. The drive to the cottage is down single track lanes that allow you to feel you have left the world behind by the time you get there. The cottage itself is set in an old farm yard, with the owners living in the farmhouse. They're great hosts - very welcoming, engaging and helpful, but leave you to yourselves. Looking out of the cottage's sitting room window our only neighbour was a farm across the fields. It has the solid, eternal feel that old buildings do, yet it's been updated and furnished in a way that is both modern and sympathetic to the building's age, meaning it's very comfy and with everything you could want in a house - even books, boardgames and dvds. We were very happy and relaxed there and enjoyed cosy evenings in with the fire burning. The village is a mile or so across the fields and the town of Llandovery is pleasant enough and a 10/15-minute drive away if you want to buy some groceries or eat out one evening. We can't recommend this property enough.

Booking Notes:
A 25% deposit by cheque or bank transfer will be required to hold a booking, and full payment six weeks before. If less than six weeks till visit, full payment will be required. In the case of cancellation six weeks or more before the booking, I will refund deposit less £25. If cancellation less than six weeks I will try to re-let the cottage and refund the tariff, less £50, when possible. If HEAVY SNOW full refund or re-book! Payment of owners fees to be made by bank transfer, or cheque. Payment of WEBSITE Fee is on line.

Changeover Day:
Changeover usually Friday or Saturday but I can often be flexible with this. Weekends and short breaks mid week too. The cottage is available from 3.00PM. Vacate by 11AM but guests may be able to stay later if the cottage is not booked.

Notes on prices:
Price includes underfloor heating, all bath and bed linen, electricity, basket of logs, cleaning, BBQ fuel, and wi-fi. Breaks from two nights minimum are available. Please contact me if you are interested in a short stay.
Early/late check in/out is often possible in the quiet season.
