About Helen, John & Family

Your hosts are John & Helen. We brought the property as a holiday home for ourselves after a long search in 2004. Nine years ago we came out for a month to repair the garden walls and do some general decoration and just forgot to go back to the UK. The villagers made us exceptionally welcome, our children were enrolled in the local school and have now spent the majority of their life and schooling in France and have been the driving force behind us remaining here. We have since moved house to the other side of the village and our aim is that each of our guests enjoys their time at Chex les Roux as much as we have. We look forwards to welcoming you all.

Helen, John & Family purchased this villa in 2004

Why Helen, John & Family chose St-Germain-de-Lusignan

We purchased the property for many reasons including the ease of access (multiple airports, road and TGV rail connections) and it's ability to be 'small enough to be homely, but big enough to enjoy'.

What makes this villa unique

We lead an active life and the property is ideally suited to that with easy access to all the beaches, forests, cycle paths etc. within the area. However, for those who wish to merely relax and enjoy the peace and quiet, the private grounds and pool are ideal.

There is a wonderful water and sports centre located in Jonzac, approx. 5 mins drive away with wave pools, slides, tropical lagoon, lazy river that meanders inside and outside of the building, gym, fitness classes, a bar, resto etc. - day membership for the gym starts at only €7, ideal for when out own pool is closed out of season.

** You may pay online immediately with Owners Direct (credit card) or direct with us via Paypal or bank transfer **

** We can offer 10% discount on ferry crossing prices with Brittany Ferries, we will provide you with a code to enter on their website when you book with us **

*** Please note, the 'service fee' you will notice when booking by credit/debit card via this website is levied by Owners Direct/Home Away (and not us) and covers your booking with confidence guarantee ***

****Please not for pet owners we require the breed of dog before confirming any booking. We also have a maximum of two pets at the property and there is a £25 per pet charge to cover the additional cleaning on departure. If in any doubt, please request our pet conditions separately. ****

** LONG TERM WINTER RATE ** The property is available for long term lets between Nov-Apr for £25/night. The minimum stay at this rate is 28 nights and all prices during this period are PLUS BILLS (electricity, water, internet, phone). Shorter stays are available during this period by contacting us directly to request - these are at the standard non-seasonal rate of £310 per week and include bills (min 7 nights stay).

Great Gite, Great location

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in Chez Le Roux for the middle two weeks in August this year and had a relaxing, as it can be with a ten year old, fortnights break.

The Gite is in a great location on the outskirts of Jonzac, which is a lovely town to visit, and eat out at. There are local thermal spa's which you can visit for treatments. A man made lake with sandy beaches and attractions for the kids, including bungee ropes, climbing wall, zip slide etc, plus a cracking BBQ restaurant, all within 5 minutes of the gite. There's one of Europes biggest water parks in Jonzac too, we didn't go, but it looked fantastic. There are local attractions, a working windmill and water wheel, and the chateau in Jonzac.

It's 3/4 hour from Bordeaux, and a park and ride get's you nicely into the town centre on the trams which run every 20 minutes, it's a huge city, with enough shops to satisfy anyones needs, and some superb sights, including the miroir d'eau, which is amazing and great fun for kids and adults.

There are some beautiful little villages nearby on the Gironde estuary, Talmont being our favourite, with loads of small artisan shops and a beautiful church, also Meschers, just up the coast, which has caves in the seawall and a brilliant restaurant in the main street, where we sampled moules mariniere.

The Gironde is a tidal river estuary, so until you move further on up it from Meschers, it's quite silty, but when you get to Royan, it has a huge sandy beach, and again is a surprising large town, with loads of shops and attractions.

Cognac is only 30 minutes away, along with Pons which has a superb central tower, with a superb view of the whole area, well worth a day out, and again some nice restaurants in the square to enjoy.

The gite was very well equipped, and very roomy too. The sun room is great, and is right next to the cracking sized pool. One major feature for us, was the pool was totally enclosed, which made it much safer for us to contain our son, and keep a good eye on him. Outside too is a built in BBQ and eating area overlooking the pool. There are supermarkets and shops within easy 5 minute drives, as well as a Pizzaria and Boulangerie, a short walk up the road, and a local lady delivers bread from a van at approx 10:30am every day, just listen for the car horn!

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, Helen and John were great hosts, and we would recommend Chez Le Roux to anyone looking for a great base to explore the Bordeaux and Cognac region of France.

Fantastic holiday in a lovely house

  • 5 of 5

A very private holiday home with lots of space for the kids to play outside. Pool fab. Outside kitchen a godsend so we could eat and cook outside. Second holiday there and very pleased to have gone back.. maybe we should have stayed 2 weeks instead of one.

We have stayed here many times, and it never fails to help us capture the very essence of France.

  • 5 of 5

When you arrive at Chez Les Roux, you immediately feel as if you have arrived home. Whether your plan is to visit the many local towns and villages, of which there are so many to choose from, or you prefer to stay and relax at the Gite it is simply perfect.

The conservatory is a wonderful place to eat, overlooking as it does the pool which provides a superb backdrop. The summer kitchen with its outside grill offers a tremendous opportunity for eating al fresco in the way we all dream of in the UK, but somehow is so difficult to achieve. The sink and the fridge allow for running back and for to the kitchen to be kept to a minimum so everyone can really enjoy the experience.

Try to visit to visit the local markets and buy some of the local produce. There are also plenty of excellent supermarkets available, but they lack the charm and the sense of achievement that you will gain from visiting the markets.

We have always found the locals to be incredibly friendly, not to mention tolerant. For those who wish to use their French, this is the place to come as there is little English spoken here so no matter what little French you have, every word is greatly appreciated and you will quickly come to love the sense of France that this area brings.

If the mood takes you away from the Gite, there are so many beautiful places to visit it is hard to name them all. The best beaches can be found to the north of Royan, which is just about an hour away. Around Royan you can find the long stretches of beach where parking can be found together with the usual amenities, for less commercialised seafront head a little further north to the Cote Sauvage where the coastline is truly spectacular. If you take some cycles with you it will be a day well spent.

The local facilities are also worth a visit and a trip to Les Antilles will not disappoint. The many local restaurants cater for all tastes and in the main represent great value for money.

The Gite is equipped with everything you will need and John & Helen are delighted to help you with recommendations and advice.

Owner's Response: As usual, it's always great to receive a positive review, especially from guests who have stayed so many times we have now become good friends; but this is far more than just a review - Tim and Jo have embraced their time here and immersed themselves into 'la vie locale', Tim's mini guide above is an excellent place to start if you're wondering what options there are in the area. We are always sad to see friends and guests depart, but we know we'll be seeing a lot more of you both this coming summer.

Amazing! Everything we wished for and more! Can't wait till next time x

  • 5 of 5

The house and pool are everything we could have wished for. The area is beautiful with loads more for the kids to do then we first thought (even though they mainly loved to live in the pool). It felt like being at home and we didn't want to leave. Loved waking up to a view of the pool and garden every morning.
