About the property

Barn in Chalais, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France - Peaceful Location But Only 2 Mins Drive To Town With All Amenities.

Nestling in a peaceful and secluded valley overlooking fields and woodland, La Grange is a converted Charentais stone barn, renovated, decorated and furnished to make a spacious, light and very comfortable home. The balcony overlooks the heated swimming pool and provides unrestricted views of the lovely Charente countryside. The 2 double bedrooms have direct access to the lower terrace which benefits from the shade of the balcony above and easy access to the secure solar heated swimming pool. There is a large sejour with ample seating and a huge oak dining table for family meals. The large balcony also has a gas barbecue and tables and chairs for those alfresco meals with parasols to provide protection from the summer sun. The property has oil fired central heating for those cooler days in early spring and late autumn.

About Helene and Bill Buttling

We moved to France in 1992 with our 2 young children who have now left the home nest and are finding their own way in life. We have been offering holidays to the UK and other markets for 16yrs, always improving the range and quality of the equipment and facilities we offer.

Helene and Bill Buttling purchased this barn in 1995

Why Helene and Bill Buttling chose Chalais

Great place to live away from the hustle and to bring up 2 young children

What makes this barn unique

The balcony is huge and offers effectively another outdoor room. It can fit 10 people easily around the tables to enjoy the barbecues whilst watching the sun go down.

The roads are almost empty and ideal for road cycling and with many cross country routes for off road cycling. We work with a bike hire company to provide you with an excellent service.

It is secluded in the countryside but within a 15 minute walk or 2 minute car drive to a market town with all amenities. It is also centrally placed to explore the areas of Bordeaux, St. Emillion, Cognac, Angouleme, The western side of the Dordogne and even an easy drive to the Atlantic coast at Royan.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a wonderful time staying in your property and as I said, the best we have rented and we have been doing this for quite a few years!! A wonderful place to be able to visit so many places - Bordeaux, Aubeterre, St Emillion and Angouleme. I hope it is alright but I have passed your details onto a couple of friends as they had seen our photos and were very impressed.

Mr and Mrs Prophet,Suffolk - September 2012

A wonderful holiday together - fabulous weather, glorious setting. Pool and balcony area set this gite apart from many others that we've stayed in....the Smiths will return next year and already can't wait.

The Smiths and Buddles, Kent - July/August 2012

Family holiday for 10 adults - Best ever

  • 5 of 5

This was a great holiday, with the only regret not having found this venue earlier having travelled to the region many times before. The accommodation comfortably sleeps 10 adults and an excellent base for exploring the region. The local village of Chalais is a must for the Monday market, with a number of bars / café help the day get off to a nice start.

The gite is well equipped and has everything you could ask for. The balcony area is an excellent added extra, which is a great space for enjoying a barbeque, having a meal or just relaxing looking over the pool or countryside.

With temperatures above 30 deg every day the pool was a pleasure and everyone made the most of it, with a warm dip before bed adding to the pleasure & relaxation.

Helene & Bill, though living next door, were not intrusive but there if needed.

A gem of a place, totally recommend to small or large groups. Best holiday in the past 10 years

Perfect for a family holiday in France

  • 5 of 5

We had such an amazing time staying in this beautiful converted barn. There were 10 of us staying, adults and children (ages ranging from 14-3) the barn was the perfect size for all of us, with plenty of room that we never felt on top of each other.

It has great features, a good layout and everything you need from a garlic press to sun loungers and parasols. The barn was very clean and tidy and the kitchen is equipped with everything you need. We loved the open plan of the lounge, dining area and kitchen, which flows nicely onto the balcony through two double doorways.

The swimming pool was clean and cleaned regularly, and has a good size area around it to sunbathe. Perfect, which meant we spent most of our time here.

Bill and Ellie are always on hand if you need them, but do not impose on you. Ellie was even kind enough to book a reservation at a local restaurant for us, which they had recommended.

The local town Chalais has everything you could need, the market on a Monday is a great place to pick up local food and drink, fresh fish, meat, bread, crepes and other little nic nacs.

There is so much to do around Chalais and the surrounding areas, we only ventured out to go canoeing as the swimming pool was the place to be! There is a stack of tourist leaflets in the barn to help you decide what to do, we will looking through them the next time we go!

Thank you Bill and Ellie for being so welcoming and accommodating, we can't wait to return again.

Lovely Converted Barn

  • 5 of 5

The property comfortably accommodates 10 people but was equally suitable for 2 people. We had a lovely relaxing holiday in a comfortable, very clean, well equipped cottage. There is a great balcony with views over the countryside; it is good for a bbq and sitting out with a glass of wine watching the sunset. The heated, private pool is a good size and ideal for cooling off in the hot weather, but as our stay extended towards the end of September, the water was a bit nippy in the early morning. Lots of places to sit to enjoy the sun/shade - balcony, terrace or around the pool.

The house is ideally located for visiting Bordeaux, Libourne, St Emilion and Bergerac and lots of other places. Chalais itself is about 20 mins walk; there is an interesting castle and church as well as shops and bars/cafes. Although the house is up a hill, it is possible to find a less strenuous cycling route into town to buy the obligatory baguette!

Bill and Helene are unobtrusive hosts, but available to give advice and recommendations as needed.

Very happy to recommend the cottage for families and couples alike.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your review of our property La Grange. We love the area too for its ease of reach to many of the places south west France has to offer. And for 2017 the swimming pool will have a new insulated cover to help with those cool morning dips in the shoulder months. Hope to see you again another year. Kind regards, Bill and Helene

Howes-Raikes Family Hols

  • 5 of 5

We had a really good time at La Grange, with 11 of us and age ranges from 9 to 49 there was enough space to be all together, large family eating areas both inside and out, the layout works really well. The terrace gives fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and also the pool area, which was a real treat to have in the super sunshine we enjoyed. The pool is extremely well maintained by Bill. There are plenty of things to do in the surrounding areas from wine tasting to tree climbing....A great place to holiday.

Wonderful peaceful villa

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a wonderful week here in June. Fabulous location – very private and overlooking gorgeous woodland, but within few minutes to all the necessary amenities. The gite itself has everything you could ask for. And the heated pool! The owners were so lovely and helpful, but not at all intrusive. We will definitely be back. And will be telling all our friends about this gorgeous holiday villa.
