Haus sonnleiten is a traditional apartment building nestling in the centre of the relatively undiscovered picturesque austrian mountain village of Hinterthal which sits amidst the hochkonig (high king) mountain range. We have a two bedroomed apartment available to let all year round, central to all amenities with pistes just a few steps from the front door. The village boasts two ski hire shops, ski school, nursery slope, lift pass hut, various bars and restaurants, a church and childrens playground. Ski bus is free and operates all day throughout the season. The nursery slope is a 5 minute walk away. Hinterthal has lots to offer in both summer and winter seasons, being surrounded by lakes, mountains and forests. It is positioned in the centre of the ski region and linked to the villages of maria alm, dienten and mulbach. Along with skiing, the region also offers tobogganning, ski biking, sleigh rides, mountain biking, swimming, horse riding and golf.

We live in rural Leicestershire, UK with 2 horses, 2 labradors and a cat. We fell in love with Hinterthal after our friends bought a hotel there, it's a beautiful peaceful location but with it's fair share of fun and activities if you want them, a great place to have fun and chill out at the same time. We have owned the apartment for 6 years.

Why Stephanie Jordan chose Hinterthal

Hinterthal is a fabulous village, very up and coming with a lot to offer in both summer and winter. All lift systems have recently been updated and service around 150km of mountain range but without the queues. Lakes and waterfalls are in equal abundance. There is a large lido pool, golf course and tennis courts at Maria Alm a short drive away so always plenty to do. Restaurants are plentiful in the village and serve everything from pizza and burgers to gourmet 5 course meals for that special occasion. You can find Thai, Chinese or McDonalds in Saalfelden as well as great supermarkets and clothes shops, 20 mins drive away. There are a good cross section of ski runs into the village and cater for all abilities.

What makes this apartment unique

Our apartment is situated in a traditional Austrian building in the centre of Hinterthal. The nearest lift is a very short walk across the lane and only 5 minutes walk to the bunny slope, ski school and hire shops etc, via a little bridge over the mountain stream. Whilst central, it is still very quiet at night and even with the windows open you only hear the stream babbling along. There is a lovely walk along the stream up to the foot of the mountains with beautiful views and woodland. If you fancy a knees up, the Alm Bar is at the bottom of the nursery slope and open well into the night with regular live bands and discos. Always a good night whatever age you are! Flights from the UK are only around 1.5 hours and transfers around an hour, so relatively little travelling time.

Notes on accommodation: The apartment is situated on the second floor of a traditional Austrian apartment block. Outside: There is a large communal garden area with lawns and a babbling stream at the bottom which runs the length of the village, you can BBQ on the apartment patio or in the gardens. There is a wooden balcony leading from the bedroom with a seat and small table and a patio from the lounge with table and chairs. Utility Room: There is a laundry room just outside the door with two washing machines and tumble dryer, sink and laundry hanging facilities. There is also a heated boot room with ski and boot racks and seating. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The apartment is cleaned before guests arrive, laundry is included. Other: There is a small entrance area with coat hanging facilities and a small room between the lounge and bedroom that is curtained off as another small bedroom with futon. The futon will be replaced with bunk beds later this season.

Wonderful Holiday

We had a wonderful holiday in Hinterthal, thank you Stephanie. The apartment is in a very convenient location to start the days skiing; very short walk to a t-bar from where you can access the whole Hochkonig area. At the end of the day and once we'd mastered the ski bus, it dropped us off a short walk away from the house, but services did stop around 5pm. The apartment had everything that we needed and even included the smaller things, like dishwasher tablets/hand wash/hairdryers so that we didn't have to worry about them. It is modern, clean and well maintained and Margit (apartment manager) was lovely and helpful. There is no shop in Hinterthal, so you may need to think about stopping somewhere to pick up essentials on arrival day. The skiing was great, just about enough to keep us intermediates entertained for the week, but to get to the other resorts included in the Ski Amade pass (there is no 6 day Hochkonig area pass) you will need a car. The mountain restaurants and food were great, and for a special evening out try Amelia's Corner in the village. I loved it here, we were blessed with beautiful sunny weather and great skiing conditions. The people were welcoming, the views were poetic and the apartment was our comforting home for the week.

The large lake at Zell am See is 20 mins drive away and good for sailing, swimming and cycling in summer and there is a Lido with large pool and other facilities at Maria Alm.


Salzburg is the nearest airport with a transfer time of 45 mins to 1 hour. Car hire is not essential although advisable if you would like to explore the area to any extent. There are plenty of car hire companies at Salzburg airport. Innsbruck airport is around 1.5 hours transfer. There are also bus and taxi transfers. Visit our website for more information.


Mulbach, Dienten and Maria Alm are all within close driving distance or you can ski to them in winter or walk in summer as some lifts are open. Maria Alm- 10 mins drive. Saalfelden, the nearest town is 20 mins drive.

Further Details:

Hinterthal has a good selection of restaurants and bars and there is a bank with cash dispensers at the foot of the village. The ski hire shop opposite Haus Salzburg sells basic groceries. The 'Umberella Bar' at the bottom of the black run in the base of the village is always a good place to stop and meet friends after a good days skiing and the last run down the Hochmais black piste. Very lively, with a smattering of Oompah music here and there for the Austrian touch. Most hotels also have friendly and welcoming bars and restaurants to fall into at the end of a long day. The Steinbock hotel serves fabulous food and is situated at the beginning of the village near the Hochmais Chair lift. The Urslauerhof- hotel and spa at the foot of the village on the right has a large terrace to enjoy a beer in the sunshine, offers mainly traditional fayre. Haus Salzburg is a British family run traditional Austrian chalet hotel with a friendly atmosphere and good food. Amelias Corner is an ultra modern bar/restaurant with a varied menu to cater for all tastes. The legendary 'Alm Bar' is situated in the center of the village at the foot of the nursery slope- by far the liveliest place to be in Hinterthal if you fancy a good knees up, with bands playing regularly and music into the early hours. The Simmonhof Hotel is directly across the road from Haus Sonnleiten serving traditional Austrian food and drink. Prices overall are relatively reasonable for a ski resort. There are two lift pass kiosks, one in the centre of the village and one at the bottom of the Hochmais lift.
