About the property

Cottage near Tavernelle, Perugia area, Umbria, Italy - 18th C Cottage, Adjoining Barn Quiet Location Near Lake Trasimeno.

La Carina is a charming 18th c farmer's cottage. The cottage with adjacent barn has been sympathetically restored and sits on a hillside looking across the valley to Panicale, a beautiful hilltop town with stunning views of Lake Trasimeno. The property stands on its own, surrounded by 1.5 acres of olive trees. It has complete privacy, yet is only 200metres above the hamlet of Macereto (the last 200metres up the hill is a white road ie unmade up) It is 5 minutes drive to the small town of Taverenelle with supermarkets , post office, pharmacy, and bank.

This is a perfect base for visiting Perugia, Assisi, Cortona, Montepulciano, Lake Trasimeno and all the many local hill towns.(Panicale is the place for drinks in its lovely piazza.) Alternatively just relax on the terrace and in the garden for a peaceful holiday in the Umbrian countryside.

La Carina is a paradise for nature lovers, with an abundance of wild flowers in spring and early summer, especially up the hill behind the house. There are birds such as hoopoes and red kites, and pine martens have been seen around the house.

There is a Water Park five minutes drive away with excellent facilities for children and adults; a very large pool, small paddling pools and several water chutes. It has large grounds with tables, loungers, umbrellas and a coffee bar

About Rosemary Ellison

The owner who lives in Edinburgh, is a professional violinist and teacher and has spent a lifetime performing with leading orchestras. Studying in Rome led to a love affair with Italy and more recently to this Umbrian hideaway which she comes to as often as possible.

When not there she hopes other people will enjoy it as much.

Why Rosemary Ellison chose Panicale

I bought the property because it is in a quiet and private position yet has easy access to the many beautiful towns of central Italy and beyond. The Umbrian hills with their chestnut and oak trees are a joy to explore and the contrast of Lake Trasimeno, make for a great variety of things to do. There are also many summer festivals and good restaurants in the area.

What makes this cottage unique

The property is only a short distance above the hamlet of Macereto so is not isolated, and only 5 minutes by car from the shops. In a way it has the best of both worlds.

For anyone keen on cooking, the kitchen has excellent equipment and access straight onto the terrace makes for easy living

Beautiful cottage in quiet village, close to many medieval & Renaissance towns

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at "La Carina" for two weeks with our three sons (ages 13, 13, and 9). It was a great vacation spot, and we all enjoyed it. Two children stayed in the "annex" bedroom--a converted barn with twin beds and its own modern bathroom. The youngest stayed in the small bunk-bed room next to the main bedroom (there is also a bathroom on that floor of the house). The house is just above the small village of Macerato, across the valley from Panicale (the drive up to Panicale takes about ten minutes). In between is Tavernelle, a more modern small town with all the necessary amenities (bakery, groceries, banks, etc.) and a very nice swimming pool, good on hot afternoons. Within a 30-60 minute drive are MANY charming historical hillside towns, with medieval walls, palaces, churches, Renaissance art, and lots of delicious dining. The cottage itself is as charming as the photos suggest and a peaceful place to relax. The view from the front terrace (with dining table and sun chairs) is lovely in the morning and evening. The host and her agent are very pleasant and accommodating. Highly recommended!

Pretty house in a lovely position

  • 4 of 5

The house is on its own in a glorious position overlooking the valley and the hill towns on the opposite side. The inside is creatively furnished and decorated and the kitchen is very well equipped, and there is lots of useful information about places to visit.

We found it an excellent base for exploring the surrounding towns and villages, which are beautiful and interesting, and for visiting the Lake Trasimeno area and the wonderful city of Perugia.

La Carina

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to La Carina -we had fallen in love with it on our first visit the previous year. We love the peace and tranquility here. Breakfast every morning on the terrace surrounded by fig and olive trees, looking out across the trees to neighbouring hills, cosy evenings in front of the log fire (it can still be chilly at night in Spring). Lots of great local food and wine available just a couple of miles away in Tavernelle. The house is a t the top of a steep hill, but no problem for competent and confident drivers. Not the sort of road for high heels! but if you enjoy your trainers this could well be the perfect place for you. We will certainly be back, and are already looking forward to it.

Holiday in Umbria 2013

  • 5 of 5

The two of us had a really nice fortnight when we stayed in La Carina this year. We enjoyed the lovely green outside space with its views and also the comfortable and tasteful interior. You can feel that this is the cherished holiday home of the owner and we shared with her the feeling that you can keep coming back here ... so much so we shall return next year for two weeks! We enjoyed relaxing at La Carina, but there are also lots of great places to visit in Umbria and the near part of Tuscany. We recommend this as a really nice base for your holiday.
