About the property

Luxury country estate near Sauve, Anduze, Gard, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Featured In Lifestyle Books. Nimes, Avignon, Arles, Montpellier, Sete, Sea & Mountains Within 1 Hour

The property comprises two tastefully restored ancient stone houses ( 1500s) and a rustic deluxe cabin in the woods ( with bath). This year we have added an adventure Tree House in the woods that sleeps 4 to 5. It has a large terrace with captivating views. There is also a shaded deck below. My husband built the treehouse himself between 7 green oak trees. The trees go in and out of the treehouse. There is bathroom below the tree house and an outdoor living room. All facing the mountains.

Perdiguier Haut itself faces the foothills of the Cévennes mountains to the west and north, and is surrounded by rolling hills of vineyards, sunflowers and evergreen oak. Situated on a hill and built around a tree shaded courtyard. It is a beautiful and tranquil little hamlet with glorious 360-degree views. The estate has been lovingly converted by my husband and I over 25 years. Evidence of a Roman temple has been found just below the property.

Rooms are decorated with antiques and modern pieces, many hand made for us, and each house has its own well stocked new chefs kitchen with high end equipment. There are also 2 outdoor kitchens, each with seating for large groups, plus a built in BBQ area with grills (charcoal and gas), planchas, paella burners and pans, etc.

The grounds are stunning and this year we have created a parkland thoughout the estate (10 acres). As you walk through the property you come upon terraces, lawns (one with a pond and fountain), flower gardens, woodland & a swimming pool. For the energetic there are 8 bicycles ( different sizes and helmets), pétanque, table tennis and badminton. We also have a gym and a range of good exercise equipment.

All of the houses and cabins are tastefully furnished and in general it feels like you and your family are in a real home, and not a rented property.

There are 8 bedrooms with excellent bedding and several private rooms with comfortable Conran sofa-beds. There are 91/2 bathrooms throughout the property.

The cabin in the woods is a romantic hideaway with 2 leafy terraces facing South and North. One of the terraces has its own mini-kitchen for outdoors for morning coffee and / or drinks.

It is a large property yet it feels intimate because of the excellent and open arrangement of houses and rooms.

The common living areas can support large or small groups. They are well furnished. In the farmhouse, all the rooms are air conditioned. The pink house, with its thick walls, remains extraordinarily cool and fresh throughout the summer. The swimming pool is large ( 12 meters x 6). It is deep enough for diving. Surrounding the pool are comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas as well as a sheltered pool kitchen with seating for a large group. The pool is situated in a private corner of the property and the views from the pool area stretch over rolling fields of sunflowers and lavender.

We have recently created a rear terrace seating area with a pond and fountain, where one can seek shade on a summer afternoon. Plus there are lots of hammocks tucked away though out the grounds.

Nearby are excellent vineyards (Pic St Loup, Faugères, etc), beaches (45 mins), river swimming and canoeing/kayaking (20 minutes), beautiful walks to suit every level, ancient villages and colourful markets throughout the week. There are festivals, exhibitions and music of all genres in local villages & towns, such as Nîmes (35 min), Montpellier (45 min), Uzès (40 min), Arles (50 min), Sète (60 min), Avignon (60 min), & fine cultural sites such as the Pont-du-Gard (50 min).

Our local village is an extraordinary medieval town; Sauve. Its ancient streets are magical. It is full of wonderful artisan galleries and art studios. Many world class artists make their home here. It is also a village of musicians and every week there are exciting outdoor concerts and other events. The local restaurants are lovely places to sit with a glass of well known local wine and gaze at the old stones of this beautiful village against a mountain backdrop. The excellent food ( one just got its first Michelin "bib" ) is a wonderful plus.

There are also many stunning walks you can take from Sauve into the Mer de Roche. ( sea of rocks ).

For walkers and hikers, it is possible to take fabulous walks of any length through the countryside directly from our property. We have left good maps for guests in the Housebook. There are also great biking paths which start from the house as well.

We also offer a fantastic catering service. (Please see the reviews )

Indeed, people who are lucky enough to visit Sauve , often wind up living here. It's what happened to us.

Guests who stay at our home say it is nothing short of paradise. We think the same.

About Zaza

We are a professional couple from London. We bought this property in 1991 and have derived great pleasure from renovating it and developing the gardens. I am a children's poet and novelist among other things and have been completely fascinated by the wildlife - and indeed all of nature - that we have encountered here. In fact, all of my recent publications have used this property as a background. Before that I was also a publisher in London and New York and many of our lifestyle books were photographed here; including several cookbooks for the Weber Grill Company. ( which I published) My husband is an economist who has found a new love here- tree house building and taking care of the trees.

We spend our summers, while we are renting, exploring other areas around the world and visiting our children who live in the states.

Zaza purchased this villa in 1991

Why Zaza chose Sommieres - Vidourle Valley

The area is truly unspoilt and maintains a strong sense of old fashioned French rural life. You can drive for hours down windy roads and see few other cars. The countryside has a rugged character, with green oaks, micocoulier trees, abundant wild flowers, vineyards, & wild herbs. Walks offer breathtaking views, rivers are unpolluted, and the towns and villages speak of their medieval past. The light is captivating and one is reminded of how Provence was 60 years ago. Yet we are not troubled by the disorienting winds of the Provençal Mistral, the endless traffic, or the Pyreneean Tramontane. Summer nights are cool and mosquito free.

The cultural life is exciting, with art and craft galleries, concerts and festivals of every variety, opera and theater. There are good restaurants, shops, & thriving street markets.

The Property is wonderfully located; only a few kilometres from fabulous and utterly charming rural villages like Sauve and Sommieres not to mention the wonderful towns of Nimes and Montpellier and Avignon.

No one ever feels isolated here, just deliciously private and tranquil . And because the estate is our home in the winter months, we have furnished it for our own tastes. Thus, you will find gorgeous antiques, great rugs and curtains, chic contemporary furniture, wonderful art on the walls, pieces from my own collection of antique American quilts ( I am a quilt collector and historian), a stunning collection of pottery as well as high end plates, glasses and cooking equipment. If I were renting a place with my family, I would be over the moon to find this property. Additionally, we have furnished the estate with loads of games, 8 bycycles, a gym, table tennis, etc. We have rented our house for 3 seasons now. Every visitor has enjoyed it thoroughly and has been utterly respectful. Personally, I cannot imagine a better place for guests to settle in for the summer and enjoy the company of family and friends in an idyllic, peaceful and magnificent setting

What makes this villa unique

The property has an enchanted air and is well looked after by a wonderful team who have been with us for 20 years. The property is full of those wonderful details which make it a pleasure to visit. And what is particularly good is that, even with a large number of guests, everyone has a private space to retreat and relax.

Each bedroom has the most wonderful views and is furnished with a good mattress and beautiful bed linen. Plus there are bathrooms galore.((!) Additionally, there are so many common areas for sitting and reading and eating and having drinks. When our children and grandchildren visit, we have our 'Apperos" on different terraces and balconies each night as the sun sets. This house is truly the prefect place to relax from the stress of work and recharge with new sights and sensations. And if you care to wander in to our local village, SAUVE, you will find a number of fantastic restaurants, bars and galleries. And during the summer months, there are at least several fantastic concerts every week. And in truth, there are exciting outdoor markets in the towns around us every single day.

We sometimes find that guests settle in so comfortably - reading by the pool, taking walks, lounging in a hammock, drinking the excellent local wines as the sun sets - that they hardly leave the hill. Yet there are so many things to see & do close by - sightseeing, river & beach swimming, mountain activities, visits to caves, canoeing, horse riding.... Then there are the wines. The Pic Saint Loup, one of the hottest new wine regions of France, is just 20 minutes away. We know many of the vignerons personally and can recommend which to visit.

I can't say enough about this property. It is a joy to have lived here for 25 years. And we love for our guests to love it as much as we do.

For my 60th birthday, I decided that my wife and I would take a trip to Europe and spend a week In Southern France.

When we arrived at the house we were greeted by Ian, the house manager who gave us the tour of the houses and explained the minor details that were so helpful. I would say that all of us were pretty awestruck at the beautiful hilltop retreat that consisted of not one house or two, but actually three including the cabin in the woods.

There were two main outdoor kitchens, one near the main house and one adjacent to the pool, that both looked like they had been featured in one of the Better Homes magazines. We used both of them extensively during the daytime and then migrated indoors in the evening. Both outdoor kitchens were as functional as indoor kitchens and contained multitudes of utensils and dishes, with everything functionally arranged as if it it had been custom designed.

The main house had an awesome French country kitchen that was simple but tastefully beautiful and a dining room that was quite large and authentic 16th century. The upstairs bedrooms were all unique in size and shape with beautiful antique furnishings.

The second house had a duplicate main kitchen and dining room and bedroom, that would have had more than enough space for all of us if it were the only house. Perhaps the thing that amazed us the most were the absolutely amazing beautiful dishes, plates, glasses and bowls that looked as if each one had been purchased separately with an artistry goal in mind.

The cottage in the woods was a large one room cottage with large bathroom that again contained every amenity needed. It was close to the other houses but yet far enough to provide a perfect reading sanctuary in the heart of the woods.

In total, we were all thoroughly impressed with the originality of each house, the beautiful French country furnishings, the amazing dishes and eatery as well as the immaculate private grounds and large on grounds pool. I can’t think of any amenity anyone could ask for that wasn’t there and almost everything you needed was duplicated in multiple locations. Everything was perfectly maintained and the ambience truly afforded us all a very restful and satisfying vacation in Southern France.

A haven in unspoilt French countryside

  • 4 of 5

We were 14, a family spanning 3 generations, and it suited us all. The Farmhouse has recently been upgraded and is delightful. The pink house was perfect for the adult grandchildren. The cabin was full of character and charm. But the real highlight of this retreat is the outside space, which is beautiful, with wonderful views, peaceful and private. We ate outside for every meal, in an outdoor kitchen, and savoured the quiet, shady terraces and quiet spots. We cooked paella, had barbeques and ate like kings! We adored the region - loved exploring the local Roman towns, markets and vineyards and Sauve is a perfect base, having recently undergone considerable urban regeneration, with great food. We would definitely return!

We recently enjoyed a most wonderful four weeks at Perdiguier Haut with family and friends. The property and its surrounds were everything we expected and more. A most beautiful mix of charming character in a stunning hill top location. Outdoors or indoors you are spoilt for choice, between the wonderful outdoor kitchen or the atmospheric 16th century vaulted dining room. The shade under the tree, or the swimming pool in the sun - endless choices. On a practical level the property was well maintained, clean and well appointed with everything you would need. The gardens were just a delight, with abundant flowers and the scents of lavender. Any issues or queries were dealt with wonderfully by the property manager (thank you Alain) and also by the owners if required. Special thanks also to Josianne and Nicolas from the nearby village of Sauve, who catered a most wonderful meal for our family at the house, to celebrate a milestone birthday. Lots to do around the area, favourites being kayaking on and swimming in the local rivers and of course the beautiful old towns and villages which surround. The biggest difficulty was leaving at the end of our stay - but we will have the memories forever. Thank you.

A wonderful family holiday for three generations in this beautifu rural area. More of a hamlet than a house giving a big party ample privacy and comfort yet proving beautiful communal areas inside and out. Much use made of the wonderful outside kitchen/eating area. Bicycled to shop for the morning bread in Sauve which we found to be an extremely friendly place where we had a memorable meal at lovely Le Troquet. Feeding everyone was easy having shopped in amazing local daily markets and had great fun swimming at the outstanding Pont du Gard and Pont du Diable Ian the owners' representative was extremely helpful and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this house to anyone wanting a holiday with a large group.

Perfect for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

We went as an extended family of 8 adults and 5 children - 3 of whom were toddlers. The layout of the property was ideal as each family had their own house! Having said this we were mainly together during the days!

The house is truly beautiful but still feels like a home so we were all able to relax

Zaro had gone to great trouble to prepare for the little ones. She set up their bedroom perfectly and went to the trouble of getting suitable toys out for them. This was much appreciated.

The shopping was very easy - we had a quick drive to Quissac which provided absolutely everything we needed.

Many a happy evening was spent on the terrace by the summer kitchen where we enjoyed many meals prepared by a local caterer Josiane and delivered to us in the early evening by the chef Nicolas for us to heat through and serve ourselves. For a special occasion Josiane and Nicolas prepared and served the meal at Perdiguier - a real feast!

Ian was a really useful source of local information and looked after us very well. The departure process was very easy.

Phillipe (the gardener and handyman) was a real star and tended the grounds beautifully. It was lovely to chat to him in the evening.

The only negative to the holiday was the intense and unusual heat the whole region was suffering - but this was in no way the fault of the property! It was a joy to retreat to the air conditioning of the cabin in the woods which itself was a pleasure to stay in.

Thank you so much for a lovely holiday

One week in French paradise

  • 5 of 5

This exceeded our wildest expectations! What a fabulous place. It's like you're in your own private hamlet on the top of a hill.

We'd seen the pictures and read the description of Perdiguier Haut so knew that it was likely to be perfect for our week of birthday celebrations with 14 adults taking over the 8 rooms. We were blown away though by the space, the level of comfort and the high spec. Everything on the website by way of description is true but more so. It feels like a cross between home and a boutique hotel.

Lazy days by the pool or sitting in the cool living areas, leisurely lunches prepared in the well appointed kitchens, gathering for sunset drinks and evening outdoor dining, eating our finds from the local supermarkets and markets.

Loads of fridge space to store your local wines, beers and food. The outdoor kitchen has loads of room to set up your bar and even has its own iPod docking station so bring your music.

Other than the daily trip for provisions, the occasional walk and a half day trip to Montpelier none of us felt the need to be away too long.

Although we spent much time together, there are plenty of spaces (indoor and out) for escape and quiet time with a cold drink or nespresso coffee and a book.

We had a local caterer, Josianne and her chef Nicolas, prepare the birthday gala dinner which was fantastic. We thoroughly recommend spoiling yourselves at least once.

Thanks to Ian for a thorough briefing and tour on arrival and smooth handover when we left and also to Philippe for the daily recycling trip and for keeping the grounds so bright.

Never before have we found it so hard to go back work and real life after a holiday. Just marvellous.

Provence Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We decided to travel to Southern France, so we invited our adult sons and their companions/wives/kids, eleven in total. Our family flew into Paris and took the 3 hour high speed train to Nimes, which was a half hour drive from the house. The property was a hilltop retreat, 40 minutes from the Mediterranean, and included 3 separate houses including a cabin in the woods. As a bonus, there were 2 main outdoor kitchens that were functional yet looked they belonged in a Better Homes magazine. The main house had an authentic country kitchen and a 16th century dining room, and upstairs bedrooms that were unique with antique furnishings. The second house had a duplicate main kitchen and bedroom with amazing artistic dishes and pottery. The cottage in the woods was a large one room house that contained every amenity needed, and was close to the other houses yet a perfect sanctuary. In total we were thoroughly impressed with the originality of the indoor rooms and outdoor living space, the beautiful French furnishings and immaculate private grounds and swimming pool. Everything was perfectly maintained and cast a peaceful ambiance that made our stay awesome. We did morning trips to the local town bakeries and frequented some of the neat local restaurants in Sauve & Qiussac. The locals were friendly and patient with their non-French speaking guests. It is without hesitation that we highly recommend this unique property which exceeded our expectations in every aspect.
