About the property

House in Lindos, Rhodes, Greek Islands - Recently Restorated, In The Traditional Settlement, 4 Minutes From Beach, Terrace with view, yard

The “lindiako spiti”, a traditional house consisting of a large single room of 34 m2 with a courtyard 18 m2 is located in the southern quarter of the historic settlement of lindos, with a fine view of the castle. This house, recently restored, was an annexe of the adjacent mansion once belonging to a family of 17th-18th century sea-captains.

The wooden sleeping bench typical of lindos over the roomy bathhouse, the floor decorated with pebble mosaics, the stone settle and fireplace in the sitting corner, and the cooking corner provided the necessary amenities for a comfortable life for a family of 2 to 4 persons.

We wind down a narrow stone paved street, then right, then left. An arched doorway framed by flowering bougainvillea opens to a small yard cobbled with black and white patterned stones. Left, steps lead onto the roof, right through another arched double door into this wonderful rebuilt traditional Lindian house. The first thing to strike us was the smell of cedar, from the wood in the ceiling and massive roof truss, the second was the height of the celing. The elevated bed is larger than it looks in the photos, a very generous double. It took a little getting used to, especialy the wonder of the doors being opened next morning and the light flooding in.

There is a feeling of quiet tranquility in the house and yard, which is remarkable so close to the centre of a busy tourist spot, and it is broken by several things. One is the Donkey Run, though it is mostly an amble as the Lindian Taxis go past to give rides to tourists. This mostly starts before 8am, not loud enough to wake us. Shouldn't still be in bed, anyway. The real tourist trail starts at 10 with the coaches arriving at the other side of this small town, and the best time is early. I recommend wandering down to Yannis Bar to watch the people pass by, have a coffee, juice or breakfast, log on to wifi and watch the town wind up. To get that far you will have passed the best minimart, and the pharmacy. Or sit in the yard and look up by the limewashed steps past the flowers to that deep blue sky. The cooking equipment and facilities are better then normal, with all the extras of home. Shower is fine, basin is as many of the fittings selected for style and utility, and I want one like it. Lots of sockets, even outside. The nearest beach is St.Pauls, which is small, terraced and lovely. Air con works well and softly. Lots of great restaurants nearby, our favourite Olympia, Lindian House during the day. All do great food and service. Greek hospitality is mythic. We recommend rising early, walking through the quiet town and up to the Acropolis before anyone else, then down into the town for breakfast, before a stroll to the beach. Lindos and Lindiako Spiti are a matchless experience.

Casa molto bella, soggiorno sfortunato (?)

  • 1 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Rhodes (City Center and Old Town) 46km (35 minutes by car), Kalithea 38km, Butterfly Valley 23km, Prasonisi 35km

Further Details:

Lindos was one of the three ancient cities of the Greek island of Rhodes, built well before the foundation of the capital, Rhodes town. A site of exceptional beauty, it is an important historic settlement, and a popular tourist destination. It is ideal for a short vacation, as it offers various possibilities as well as the traditional element. The beach of Lindos and the small harbour of St. Paul offer excellent bathing and the colourful shops, restaurants, cafes and bars ensure a pleasant stay. The location of Lindos in the centre of the island facilitates access to many sights for daily excursions.

The imposing landscape is dominated by the ancient acropolis, one of the most important in Greece, with a temple of the goddess Athena, and Byzantine and Hospitaller monuments and fortifications. A distinctive architecture and rich decoration make the fortified mansions of 17th and 18th century sea-captains a notable feature of the settlement.
