One of two Villas Set in an idyllic position on the edge of the enchanting village of Embres et Castelmaure and surrounded by sun drenched limestone hills, lush vineyards and aromatic pines. Villas Grenache and Syrah are built in the same style and next door to each other, but in entirely their own plots, with their own pools, gardens and terraces. Built in an upside down fashion to make the most of the breathtaking views across the Corbières mountains to provide light and airy family living space on the first floor and cool bedrooms on the ground floor - very welcome in the height of the summer. If like us you enjoy a rural French ambiance, where the pace of life is slow and uncomplicated, yet if you want your holiday home to offer you the modern luxuries to help make your stay relaxing and comfortable our villas are the place for you! Close to lovely Mediterranean beaches, and the pretty town of Durban with shops and amenities, the surrounding area is rich in Cathar history, medieval castles, ancient monasteries and beautiful landscapes to drive, walk or cycle through. Autoroute 30 mins & Airports approx 50 minutes away.

Villa GRENACHE has 3 bedrooms, the master is very spacious, has a Kingsize bed (1.6m) and an en suite bathroom. The other two have twin beds and all three open directly onto the terrace – perfect for slipping out for that early morning swim! Both the en suite and the family bathroom have toilets and spacious wet rooms with good showers, electric points and heated towel rails. The kitchen area makes cooking easy and sociable with seating at the breakfast bar. Equipped with oven/hob/grill, toaster, kettle, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and large fridge freezer with plenty of space to stock up should you wish to eat in. First floor bright and spacious with stunning wood beams and full length windows for fantastic views of mountains. Comfortable seating at one end (TV, DVD, log burner for winter evenings). Central dining area and open plan kitchen at opposite end.

Villa GRENACHE is detached and has its own pool and garden. Villa SYRAH next door and has its own pool and garden.

An extremely comfortable modern villa - excellent!

Villa Syrah is a well presented modern villa with excellent accommodation. The upstairs one plan living space is fantastic with an excellent kitchen, dining and sitting area. The bedrooms and shower rooms are modern and ideal for a family vacation. The villa is extremely well equipped and helpful information supplied. The terrace and pool area are well appointed with great views to the hills. Situated in a quiet location, close to the village, it is ideal for a restful stay.

Lovely villa and great views

Arrived at Villa Grenache after long drive and immediately jumped into fabulous refreshing swimming pool. Hot week ,loads of walks in lovely countryside and pop up restaurant at local wine cave a revelation. Delicious local wine from the cave, very relaxing and peaceful week. Great villa with lovely first floor open plan sitting room and kitchen with fabulous views.

Wonderful place for a relaxing break

Lovely bright house with stunning living space and great little pool - perfect for our family with 3 teenagers. Debbie and Peter, the owners, and Joanne, the local caretaker all very helpful, and the villa was immaculate and well-appointed.

The village wine "Cave" is very handy to keep supplies topped up, and we ate at the fantastic pop-up tapas restaurant there on 2 evenings - a must during the summer.

The area is very rugged, with small vineyards tucked among the wild and dramatic scenery. The Cathar castles to the south are well worth a visit, as are Carcassonne and Narbonne.

Shame there is no shop in the village for the morning croissants, but there's a good little supermarket 10-15mins drive away, which includes an excellent boulangerie.

We rarely visit the same place twice, but I could easily be tempted back here...!

Fabulous luxury villa ideal for families

We have visited this villa two years in a row. Sharing it on one occasion with grandparents. It's in the most beautiful peaceful setting with fabulous views of vineyards and mountains.

The villa is equipped to the higher specifications with calming colours comfy beds and fabulous bathrooms and kitchen.

The villa is immaculate with stunning tiles throughout.

The pool area is gorgeous and we spent many days chilling with a glass of wine or two from the local cave (5 mins walk).

The villa is about 15 mins from the local supermarket which is well stocked and has a bakery attached.

The beach is a short car journey away and the African safari park well worth a visit.

We love this villa and wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Can't wait to return it makes me heart sing just thinking about it.

Embres et Castelmaure

We (M&D + 4 children) had a great time staying in Embres et Castelmaure.

The accommodation is superbly appointed with everything a holidaying family could want. The villa was clean and well maintained and the local agent was really helpful with everything we could want.

We felt the villa owners really wanted us to enjoy ourselves and provided great support before, during and even after we were on holiday.

The children had a great time in the pool, Dad was a regular at the local wine cave 5 minutes walk away and Mum watched from the balcony with a drink in hand.

We toured the local area, went to the beach and visited Carcassonne.

Definitely need a car as it's in a delightful, rural location.

Location

We stumbled across the Corbieres/Languedoc region 8 years ago and finally took the plunge to develop our own house in 2010/11. We love visiting the beach but are not so keen on 'resorts' so looked for a site about 30 minutes inland to experience more rural France. We think our position is perfect, you really do get a chance to relax and unwind....and when ready there is so much to do within easy reach.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The excellent beaches at Le Franqui (blue flag beach) and Leucate Plage are only a 25 minute drive, and there are many more to discover if you want a change of scenery up and down the coastline.

Travel:

Due to the rural nature of the area you will need a car to get around. Some visitors drive from the UK/northern Europe, others fly and pick up a hire car at the airport.

Airports are within easy reach with Perpignan (50 minutes) Carcassonne (55 minutes) Beziers (60 minutes) , Montpellier (90 minutes),Girona (90 minutes), and Toulouse (2 hours) all serviced by UK /Irish airlines such as Ryanair, BA, Easyjet and Aer Lingus.

TGV from Paris which arrives in Narbonne (only 45 minutes away).

Distances:

Embres et Castlemaure is a tranquil rural village, serviced only by a daily bread van and a weekly fruit, veg and meat van...but more importantly housing a renowned wine cave which is open daily!

There is a boulangerie in the next village (5 minutes drive) and a supermarket, pharmacy, patisserie, bar, newsagent and petrol station in Durban (15 minutes drive). Numerous markets in villages and hypermarkets/more extensive shopping a little further afield in Narbonne and Perpignan (45 minutes).

Further Details:

Spend your days relaxing by the pool, walking through the vineyards, or simply sitting on the balcony, soaking up the sunshine and view.

If you can bear to leave the tranquility of the village, the Corbières have much to offer the driver or cyclist, every turn of the windy roads providing another breathtaking view and before many miles have past you will see another monastery, château or ruined castle.

Mediterranean Beaches are only 25 minutes away, the historic walled city of Carcassonne an hour, and ancient monasteries of Lagrasse and Frontroide are within easy reach. The village is situated the same distance from the market town of Narbonne with one of Frances best food markets, (and the beautiful Canal du Midi) and the city of Perpignan with its interesting Catalan influence.

For those more active, windsurfing is available at Cap Leucate, and golf, tennis, horse riding and sailing are all nearby with winter sports available in ski resorts only 2 hours away.

The African reserve at Sigean (25 minutes away) is one of the most highly rated wildlife parks in Europe.

For lovers of food and wine there are local restaurants in many villages with reasonable priced menus, very good mid priced restaurants reached in about 20 minutes by car, and even a world renowned 3 Michelin star restaurant just 25 minutes away.

A highlight for many visitors is the wine sampling and purchasing from the many Châteaux and wine Caves in the vicinity, the local wines becoming evermore popular for their quality and value.

  • Notes on accommodation: Cot and highchair can be provided on request. We are a non smoking property. Outside: There is a large terrace leading from the ground floor bedrooms right up to the swimming pool, giving plenty of room to relax on the sun loungers, and for outdoor dining using the BBQ and outside table and chairs for 6. The private swimming pool is 9m by 4.5m and is accessed by roman steps and has a regulation safety cover. The house is surrounded by a large natural garden with immature plants having been a vineyard until recently. We have fantastic walking and cycling terrain on the doorstep, and there are many other activities such as horse riding, water parks, bowling, ice skating, indoor swimming pool etc within easy reach toward the coast. Drive 45 minutes inland for white-water rafting and Kayaking.
