The original stone cottage dates back to the 16th century and nestles at the base of terraced gardens providing wonderful colour in the Spring and Summer. A recent extension has been added in keeping with the original building which increases the accommodation by two further bedrooms, additional bathroom, dining room and TV viewing room. In 2008, a private pool was constructed within the walls of a derelict ancient outbuilding This is surrounded by a decked area which receives late evening sunshine. Perfect for aperitifs by the pool! There is also a lawned area ideal for catcing the evening rays. Off-road parking at the entrance to the property gives way to stone steps leading to the front door. Situated near the Breton village of Malguenac to the West of Pontivy, guests are ideally placed to explore Southern and Western Brittany as the cottage is in the Morbihan. Golfers will find the local 9 hole course of Rimaison a testing challenge.

About the Owner

John and Jan Peters live in Jersey in the Channel Islands, Le Petit Chateau is their much loved holiday home. It is somewhere to relax and unwind enjoying not just the house but the good food and wine on offer in the region. They try and spend as much time as possible at Le Petit Chateau and would like to share this beautiful cottage with you.

I am their Daughter-in-law Tina, I take care of the rental side for them due to their lack of IT knowledge! My family love the cottage too, we have had many great family holidays and my children have taken friends with them too, we walk, read, laze, drink, eat, horse ride, shop, go quad biking and visit the nearby towns and villages. You can do as little or as much as you like, its up to you.

A charming cottage with all the modern amenities we expected to make our holiday very enjoyable. The pool was a great hit with the kids and we could let them have their own space in the evening thanks to the second TV viewing area.

We loved the garden and BBQ there were so many places to sit and sip a nice glass of wine and read.

When we holiday in France, as soon as we set foot on French soil, it feels like we’re home and this lovely cottage feels like a home rather than a holiday let. It was large enough for us to have our own space when we wanted to (curling up with a book or just enjoying the sunshine) but we also had lots of fun together in the pool and loved the upstairs lounge for relaxing in the evenings. An internet free week made for a lovely week of teenage sisters actually talking to us and more importantly each other!

Pontivy is a beautiful, archetypal, French town. A market is always a fantastic experience and the traders were all very friendly and helpful. I can speak French, but if I struggled, they guided me through. What we like is the fact that you are offered to try before you buy and the nectarines and tomatoes were simply the best!

We wandered the streets and around the perimeter of the chateau (unfortunately we couldn’t go in because quite a substantial wall had collapsed), but this didn’t spoil the atmosphere. It is a dream of ours to one day own a house in France, so of course we had to look in the estate agents window too!

The town of Josselin is definitely worth visiting. We had a tour of the chateau, you have to have a guided tour to go inside but you can wander through the gardens at your leisure. Even if you don’t visit the chateau, the town itself is a wonderful mix of stone or timber framed buildings in narrow streets.

All in all, this cottage is perfect for those wanting a quiet, relaxing holiday.

Lovely Holiday Cottage!

We love the Morbihan region of France and were delighted to come across this cottage on the website as it ticked most of the boxes - we especially wanted a pool this year as our girls are growing up fast and we wanted to do less driving round and more lazing in the sun.

We were really very pleased with the cottage - it was comfortable and homely, very much what we look for in a holiday property. The pool really did make the holiday though - we had some really hot weather and after a stroll round one of the nearby towns we were more than happy to spend the rest of the day swimming and relaxing. The amenities at the cottage were great, we especially liked the big barbeque and comfortable outside seating area. Freeview was a hit with the girls so we had happy children! They were rather disappointed not to have internet access but to be honest I found it refreshing not to have them glued to the laptop all the time!

The nearby towns of Pontivy and Josselin are beautiful, and whilst you are not near the coast, the Lac du Guerledan is only a 20 minute drive away and is fantastic for water sports and swimming. One of our favourite little towns - St Nicholas Des Eaux - was 15 minutes away. Well worth a visit for a walk by the river, to hire a canoe or pedalo, and for a meal in one of the restaurants.

I would not hesitate to recommend this cottage to friends and relatives, and would very much like to return in the future.

This area of Brittany was particularly attractive to John and Jan as, being so central, the options for exploring are limitless. The historic market towns of Pontivy and Josselin are both very accessible as are many of the towns and fishing villages along the Morbihan coast. They have spent many hours creating the floral, terraced gardens and wanted to share their enjoyment of their country cottage with like-minded guests. The Cottage is just 2 minutes from the little village of Malguenac and just 10 mins from Pontivy. Half an hour away is Josselin with its Chateau and forty minutes is the old seaside town of Vannes.

Coast/Beach:

The spectacular Gulf of Morbihan is less than an hour away as is the Granite Rose Coast to the north of Brittany. The famous Lac de Guerledan (Brittany's largest natural lake) provides swimming, boating and walking facilities plus summer-long events it is a lovely central spot in Brittany.

Travel:

The Breton ports of St Malo, Roscoff and St Malo are all within an easy driving distance. The Channel tunnel or ferries to Calais are an option, although the drive time to Brittany is around five hours. The airports of Dinard and St Brieuc to the north and Rennes to the south offer summer only services from the UK. A private car or hire car is essential to make sight-seeing a part of your holiday.

Distances:

The local village of Malguenac is within walking distance or 2 mins by car. Pontivy is the local market town and is about 10 mins away by car. The countryside is beautiful a walk to the village via the woodlands is lovely and safe for children to run and play.

Unique benefits of the property.

In 2007 John set about building a swimming pool in the ruins of an adjacent outbuilding at one end of the garden and this has become a unique feature of the property. The Nantes-Brest canal meanders through the adjacent area and, along with the river Blavet, affords many opportunities for canal and riverside walks and cycle rides.

There is a guest book to read on arrival, to give you information on the area, restaurants, quad biking etc, we initially put this together and has since been added to by clients who have stayed.

Upon confirmation of your booking, a £250 deposit will be required against the final rental payment. The balance will be due six weeks before the rental start date. We will also request a £200 deposit against breakages/damages during your stay. This will be refunded immediately after we have ascertained the property is in good order.

Changeover Day:
Our changeover day is normally on a Saturday, although this is flexible outside of the high season. We also consider rentals of less than week in spring and autumn. We would ask that guests vacate by 11am and incoming guests arrive after 3.30pm.

Le Petit Chateau is a great holiday home and has something for everyone. Our family have been on many occasions and even with the house full you are not on top of each other. With the two lounges and bedrooms on the ground and first floor, there is plenty of room for everyone to have their own space. The evening sun sets on the decking making it the perfect spot for drinks before dinner or an evening dip. The BBQ area and the grassed lawn in front of the kitchen door are both lovely areas to sit and eat or simply relax with a good book. Nearby quad biking is a must if you want to do something more adventurous, it is only 15 minutes away. A great way to see the French countryside as the farmer will take you through fields, valleys and streams. Horse riding is close by too.

Outside: The gardens are largely laid to stone-built floral terraces, providing fantastic colour in Spring and Summer. The pool is surrounded by decking and a line of safety rails, so is ideal for children of all ages. There is a selection of outdoor furniture and sun shades for use around the pool. There is a gas BBQ and outside dining table on a terrace separate from the pool. Off-road parking for up to three cars. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Although we provide duvets and pillows, we can supply bed linen and towels at a cost of 18 euros for a double bed and 10 euros for a single bed if required.
