About the Owner

I am a very francophile Englishman. I have lived, loved & worked in France for much of my life. My life partner is french. France suits US very well. The food & drink, the people, the geography & the way life is lived combine to give me & mine virtually all we need. There are few problems that are not diminished by a cup of coffee & a chin wag.

Owner's Response: Frankly, I found the review amusing. We rent out La Roseliere having deliberately restored it to give a relaxing welcoming even homely feel. It is not a 5 star hotel & thus is without formality. We offer it within a large garden, which itself offers seclusion, yet is only 15 minutes drive from the nearest town & 5 from the nearest restaurant. Nothing in the house is tired, old or worn out. 'Maison Steptoe' it certainly is not. The comments concerning the kitchen may have some small validity but as I write we are refurbishing its units & will add a new dryer this winter. Similarly, the shower room is receiving attention with new porcelain items & a new heater. In over 20 years of renting out holiday homes, we have had many returnees over many years. Also we receive, letters, phone walls & mails, thanking us & recomending us to others. So we must be doing something correctly.

perfectly peaceful

  • 4 of 5

Great location to get away from it all.Pleantey of space for the kids to play, bikes were great, really enjoyed the sheep and cows in the fields beside the house. The house was clean and tidy and french rustic which suited us,a larger fridge freezer and an extra sofa in the house would be better as only one sofa for 7 is not enough.Having wifi and the freeview tv chanels was really good and we would recomend the cottage as a great getaway and Robbie was very helpfull and answered all questions quickly. The area is lovely and really nice neighbours and you must try the cidre from the farmer at the bottom of the lane.

A peaceful retreat for the family

  • 4 of 5

The gite proved to be of a good size, large enough for most families.

It was comfortable and well equipped and quite homely....especially with the woodburner lit on chillier evenings.

The owners were helpful and provided us in advance with lots of helpful advice.

Not overly glamorous accommodation (with everything matching), but good value.

We fully intend to return.

Fantastic!!

  • 5 of 5

What can I say a little dream house nestled amoung beautiful trees. We stayed for nearly 2wks and we didn't want to leave!! Total peace and tranquility! My boys had great fun running around the gardens picking up the fallen fruit! Only noises to be heard are the cows in the field and the pigeon living in a tree out the back! The owner gave us great info about the area and the house before arrival which was a great help! I cannot fault this house at all it was a home away from home and we will definetly be back and we will recommend it to all!!

La Roseliere

  • 3 of 5

This location served as a good base for our short break in Normandy, classic rural France with amenities to match (don't ignore the owners advise about opening times - especially if arriving on a Monday!). As a party of 4 we had hoped to take advantage of the extra space offered by the 3rd bedroom/loft area but disappointingly found this room inadequate for use, the room was damp and had a 'work in progress' feel to it and a considerable issue with resident flies and wasps. On enquiry prior to booking the owner had advised the room would (in their opinion) be suitable for either of our 7 or 70 year old party members, but with access being via a steep ladder with insufficient hand rails and a heavy overhead trap door this unfortunately was not the case. Fortunately we found sufficient comfort for all on the ground floor and the wood burner gave good warmth when the temperature dropped. We did not prepare any cooked meals at the property so cannot comment too much on the kitchen facilities but all basis seemed to be covered (apart from the absence of a functional corkscrew!) and there was always plenty of hot water. We did not get to benefit from the bikes owing to flat tyres but the local cycle path along the disused railway line is well worth a walk, fantastically peaceful and tranquil. Overall a great location but unfortunately (for us) the property was let down by the third bedroom. We were unable to contact the owner for the duration of our stay.

Owner's Response: I cannot but agree that the upstairs was a "work in progress" as I had been called to return to UK to resolve an urgent family crisis & could not return in time to finish the work before Mr Eccott's arrival. However, all is finished now with a made to measure staircase with handrails to both sides & the trap door has been replaced. I cannot agree about the flies & wasps. Of course being a country property we have them but not large numbers. Similarly, being a detached older cottage, it can feel damp in Autumn until the heating is on. I now have a large stock of corkscrews, which guests seem to take as souvenirs, so my cleaner will make sure there is at least one in the kitchen. Ihave been letting Holiday properties for over 20 years & this is the first complaint I have ever had. I am proud of La Roseliere as a relaxing place to take a Holiday & that we get many visitors returning year after year. I have explained matters to Mr Eccott & offered him a free week to compensate. Thank you, Robbie Carberry.

Location

From the Owner

We had had a house in the Orne (also in Normandy) for 16 years but felt but felt the need for a bigger garden & possibly a bit of isolation. We cast our net wide but ended up moving 12 kms into the Manche & got what we wanted but without losing any friends or the sense of belonging to a locale. This part of Normandy is more tranquil than most, with infinitely less traffic than many tourist areas. Yet there is a huge variety of activities: beaches, forests, medieval towns, lakes, the list goes on. The sense of "terroir" is keenly felt here (my neighbour makes AOC cider), locally produced veg, meat & cheese abound much of it direct from the farm or artisan made. We are tucked away but only an hour & a half from Caen-Ouisterham, which is less than 3hours from Portsmouth on the catermeran.

Further Details:

St Cyr itself has few amenities having only a friendly cafe/bistro. St Georges St Marre & Barenton (all 4km) all have bakers & minimarts. Domfront is living medieval history but also has 3 supermarkets & many shops & restaurants. Flers has 3 hypermarkets, lots of shopping & a street market as does St Hilaire De Harquoet (20kms). Mont St Michel is a must see but do go early.

Locally there is lots of walking, 2 lakes & several other fishing

facilities & wonderful downland & forests to explore. There are many local cider producers. Among them our neighbouring Farmer, Philippe who produces both Apple & Pear Cider & Apple Brandy also known as Calvados. His wife Emmanuelle speaks good English but is a little shy about using it.

The house also has a a wide range of publicity for the county & individual attractions. We also have newish neighbours in Nick & Fien, an anglo Belgian couple.

Facilities

From the Owner

A true rural idyll. Very few cars venture near us. Lowing cattle & the once a day milk tanker are about as noisy as it gets. The house is well equipped inside & outside the large garden, including an orchard, has many corners for relaxation. 100 metres away is an old railway track reborn as a "chemin vert" letting you easily cycle or walk seemingly for ever & lose yourself in "la nature". On the other hand the village of St Cyr is less than 1km away & has a good restuarant value bistro. Domfront, with its 100 year war castle is 14km & can satisfy most desires but if it is too far, then Barenton is only 4 kms & has a small supermarket, café & bakers, as does St Georges de Roulley. On the direct road between these to is a large butches & delicatessen.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: The house has been equipped to a good standard for use as a home. It is? we believe, much more welcoming & visitor friendly than the average gite. Mobile phone & finternet access are available but sometimes patchy which means taking the mobile into the garden. Outside: One km from the village & off a quiet country lane, the house sits surrounded by the garden & has its own secluded access from the road. The garden is mostly laid to lawn & there is a small orchard of pears & apples. Additionally there are plum, peach & cherry trees scattered in the grounds & outside the living room a walnut tree. There is a patio with BBQ. There is an outdoor dining table with chairs & a large picnic table with benches. All of this is secluded, private & very quiet, lowing cattle being the loudest thing around. Yet we are only 15 minutes drive from civilisation in the form of Domfront, a medieval city with all modern conveniences. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels & bed linen are not provided but duvets & pillows are. The house is cleaned weekly at no extra charge. There is full intenet access but mobile phone access may br patchy. Other: The access to bedroom 3 has been improved, with a new staircase.
