Overview

About the property

House in Istán, inland from Marbella, Costa del Sol, Spain - Great Tapas And Restaurants In The Village, Yet Only 10 Miles From Marbella

Istán is one of the 'white villages' of Andalucia on the edge of the National Park of the Sierra de las Nieves. The Rio Verde runs through the Park which is magnificent walking country, with wild flowers, birds, natural springs and native woodland set in a southern Spanish mountain climate. It is reached by a 10 mile drive on mountain road from Marbella. It is a well cared for and beautiful village of 1500 people. There are two small supermarkets, a bank, three or four restaurants and several bars, most of which serve tapas. There is a market at the weekend, and fresh fish is brought from the coast once or twice a week. The village has a new public swimming pool, with landscaped gardens, open during the summer months.

The property is a simple one-bedroom two-storey traditional village house. The house is on the northern side of this beautiful and friendly 'white' village and has spectacular views of the mountains from balconies and roof patio. The lounge/diner has a simple kitchenette with fridge and two burner cooker; above is a pretty bedroom with a double bed, and a bathroom (with shower). A convertible sofa can accommodate a third person, by arrangement.

In the village, various local festivals, both cultural and religious, are held throughout the year, such as the Easter processions, and others honouring Istán's saint. Many of the villagers are farmers and the village is a thriving 'working' community.

About Graham & Judith Wilson

I've lived in the centre of Bath for over 30 years in our old stone house on the river. Graham and I converted the old kitchens about 20 years ago to make a spacious apartment to let for holidays for a variety of visitors around the world.

Our small holiday house in a 'white' mountain village in Andalucia offers a quite different experience. We love both!

Graham & Judith Wilson purchased this house in 1998

Why Graham & Judith Wilson chose West Costa del Sol

The mountains of Andalucia are stunning and the traditional 'white' villages such as Istán give you a taste of how life used to be, not really so long ago in this part of Spain.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'The villagers are very friendly and we happened to be there at the time of their Saint's festival - magical!'

'Thank you for letting us stay in this wonderful, peaceful place. The air is incredible, the tapas divine - and my husband spotted a Golden Eagle!'

'We didn't move off the roof terrace all week!'

The highlight of our 3week tour of Andalucia

  • 5 of 5

The village house is situated in the friendly & beautiful village of Istan , surrounded by breathtaking views of the Sierras. We had breakfast & barbecues on the roof terrace where you had to pinch yourself when the mountains seemed in touching distance of our table!. The lovely house had everything you need & was spotlessly clean & comfortable. We felt quite at home here & in the village itself with its friendly & welcoming people. We ran out of superlatives when describing our stay here. Thank you Graham & Judith! You made our stay the highlight of our holiday.

Lovely house in a very welcoming little village

  • 5 of 5

This was the first time that we had stayed west of Malaga. We were not disappointed. The house was spacious enough for two people and very clean with terrific views. The village is probably the cleanest that we have visited so far and the people are so very warm and friendly. We were on speaking terms with quite a few villagers by the time we left and felt quite involved with village life.

The walking was extremely good in the area although tough and not for the faint-hearted!

We would certainly recommend this house to anyone contemplating staying in the village. Communication from the owners is first class.

A super location, peaceful and friendly with great accommodation.

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at this little pueblo house in Istan. The facilities were superb including a washing machine and hairdryer! The views from the terraces were amazing and it was just so peaceful. We actually didn't leave the village for the entire week we were there. The local bars are very friendly and great value for money. The local villagers made us feel very welcome, and with a little imagination you can create great meals from the ingredients available to buy in the village. We tried a couple of the walks in and around Istan, but by far our favourite was the walk to the river. As we were there in August we welcomed a swim in the beautiful river, while watching dragonfly's hover above us and fish swim beneath our feet - it was just idyllic. We strongly recommend this house and location to anyone who has a busy life at home and just wants to unwind. Thank you to Janet and Graham for allowing us to stay in your home - a holiday we will always remember.

Wendy and Clive.

A perfect hideout.

  • 5 of 5

Our daughter has just moved to Istan, hence our visit, and we could not have found a more perfect hideout for ourselves. The house is beautifully simple and clean and looked after by a local contact who left us a bowl of produce from her plot. Judith and Graeme had given us all the information we needed to find the house and to feel at home as soon as we stepped through the door.We spent many hours on the traditional roof-top terrace enjoying the panoramic views of the mountains and the white- painted village in the changing light of sunrises, sunsets and sharp Spanish sun and listening to the sounds of the local environment. Everything we needed for a simple existence was either in the house or could be found in the local shops. The baker had fresh multi-grain loaves ready at 8 in the mornings and most of our meals were eaten on the roof terrace. The village has a cared for, loved feeling and all the villagers we met were welcoming and tried to converse with us, inspite of our limited ( very) Spanish. We loved the narrow, winding streets peppered with beautifully tiled fountains of fresh water flowing from the mountain spring. When we first arrived it was the middle of the San Miquel Feria and the village was awash with red and yellow and green and white flags. It looked exciting and we were welcomed to join the street bands in the early morning, the music and dancing on the main plaza that carried on through the nights. It was lovely to see all ages out having fun and children on the dodgems till two in the morning! Istan has developed a range of natural and appropriate public facilities which are available for everyone to use. We enjoyed walks up to a viewpoint overlooking the reservoir, down to the Verde River and trails through an area of natural vegetation and farmland to the Springs. We will be back ( we haven't tried the swimming pool yet with the spectacular mountain backdrop!) and will recommend this house to friends. In fact we already have!

Simply stunning

  • 5 of 5

We were very much looking forward to the visit, and were not disappointed. Tucked away at the edge of the village, and thus with great views of the surrounding countryside from the sunkissed terrace, this is a real gem of a place. Istàn itself is a friendly pueblo with a lot to offer, and is ideally situated for exploring near and far. The road to the village ends there, so having no through traffic adds to the sense of tranquillity. Facilities in the property were just right - the place light and airy - and the terrace is an ideal spot from which to contemplate the stars, or simply to relax as swifts wheel overhead in the daytime. We shall definitely be back!

Autumn stay

  • 5 of 5

Just spent a great week in Istan at this house. Lucky with the weather this late in the year so made lots of the roof patio. The house is simply furnished but very adequate. I cooked several small meals on the 2 ring gas worktop cooker. I think supermarkets is a little misleading by UK standards and I would recommend a trip to Lidls on the way in (if you have a car) or go down on the bus to shop in Marbella and have lunch. However the local shops do carry most basic stuff. A car will sit in the car park most of the week so I think this house suits folks who want walks, local culture and slow lazy days. You can use it as a tour base but in continually going up and down the hill you will not get a good feel for the spirit of the village nor the friendliness of the locals. In summary a great place for true afficionados of the Spanish way of life. Great week in a -very nice local house.

Coast/Beach:

10 miles drive on a good road to reach the coast and the beaches of Marbella or San Pedro.

Travel:

Malaga and Gibraltar airports are the same distance from Istán (45 miles) and car hire is easy to arrange. Anyone wishing to sightsee and travel to the coast daily should consider car hire; parking is easy in the village. For the budget traveller who is not in a hurry there is good public transport. Buses leave regularly (once or twice an hour) from Málaga to Marbella, and there are three buses a day between Marbella and Istán (weekdays only)

Distances:

All the amenities of a busy village are available on your doorstep in Istán; the village itself has a Moorish tower and archway, waymarked walks and viewpoints and some historic tiled fountains including the famous 'Chorro', as well as a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. The protected Pinsapo Pine grows on these mountains. Tours of Andalucia's 'white' villages, of which Istán is one, are recommended. Marbella and the coast can be reached with a 10 mile drive down a well-made mountain road.

The village has a large pool with great views! The pool is very high quality, with showers and changing rooms. There is a bar with food. Opens for summer months only from 12 noon until 8pm.
