La Garde Freinet village is located 16 klms from the Mediterranean coast in the "Maures" mountain range in Provence, just north of Saint Tropez, between Nice and Marseille. It provides its vistors with all the amenities required for a wonderful holiday and boasts two butchers, two bakers, two well-stocked convenience stores, two hairdressers, a bank with an ATM, a public swimming pool, a post office, newsagent, tobacconist, pharmacist, dentist and doctor. Market days are Wednesday and Sunday. As well as the opportunity to enjoy the Provencal lifestyle a visitor can enjoy many marked trails providing exceptional mountain views, world class golf courses as well as the delights of such well-known resorts as St Tropez, Ste Maxime and Port Grimaud, with their world famous yacht marinas, fine beaches and top restaurants. There are many wineries in the area worth visiting and many local wines worth sampling.

We live in England with our three (almost) adult children. My wife and I both work, but are intent on spending most of our holidays in France, where we can enjoy sun, food and wine. We bought our new home in 2011 and plan to many spend happy family holidays there.

We love La Garde Freinet because it is an iconic French village only 30 mins drive from beautiful beaches, great golf courses and chic restaurants. The area is fantastic for walking and enjoying the countryside. There really is something for everyone here. The area is easily accessible with Nice only an hour and a quarter's drive away.

We are both Australian and miss the sun filled days of our youth. La Garde Freinet offers this and so much more.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is over 300 years old and is only a stroll from the centre of the village. The south facing sun terrace is exceptional and the remaining rooms are full of character with many charming features.

Notes on accommodation: La Chouannerie is ideal for a family holiday but would also suit 3 adult couples since every bedroom has complete privacy and the rooms are spacious. It was awarded 3* meublé de tourisme by the Ste Maxime Tourist Office in February 2013. Heating - As well as the wood burning fire there are also electric wall heaters in every room to provide immediate warmth when required. Rubbish - isn’t collected as it is in major cities. There are communal bins and bottle banks scattered throughout the village with the closest being on Rue de Planette just beyond its junction with Rue de Pins. That is, walk out the front door turn left up the hill and then right. Please do not let rubbish accumulate at the house and we would prefer it if you took the rubbish out daily. Outside: The south facing terrace is splendid and provides both sun and shade without the annoyance of mosquitos. You will find circular and rectangular metal tables and eight chairs to enable al fresco dining for your party. There is a three burner gas barbecue to guarantee excellent home cooked cuisine. As well as the main car parks in front of the Town Hall and at the North West corner of the village there are three approved parking places on Rue de Planette just above the property and there is usually space for three cars to park in front of the property with cars facing down the hill (as seen in the picture of the property). Both spots are available on a “first come, first served” basis. Utility Room: The utility room situated downstairs between the second and third bedrooms holds both a washing machine and a clothes dryer and opens up to the street level. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen, bath towels AND beach towels ARE provided. The house is cleaned after every tenant and fresh linen provided. Other: The book shelves in the Living room are stocked with English books as well as board games. Please feel free to use them but ensure they are returned so that those that follow you can enjoy them as well.

Iconic and Idyllic

We loved the ambiance of this home and its location to the town centre. You can sit on the terrace for hours and it feels like you are watching from inside a painting. The BBQ and fridge make this an ideal spot for family and friends to gather and enjoy the village lifestyle. The rest of the house is extremely comfortable and every room has direct access to its own bathroom. This is superb accommodation that provides a perfect location to explore the many delights of the region. I recommend this house and village to anyone wanting to experience the French lfestyle. Vive la France

Still superb!

Seven delightful days in October 2015 (see an earlier review) prompted Louise and I to return, for 12 days, in October 2016. We once again had a wonderful time, quietly enjoying the house and its setting.

The merits of the house were as before... a perfect base for spending time in this corner of France. We easily slipped back into our routines of the previous year, a delightful mix of quiet and totally relaxed domesticity (reading, cooking, eating, drinking, snoozing, sunning ourselves, talking...) with hiking and other outings.

Just the two of us, we again mostly occupied the upper two floors. However, with thoughts that we might be able to return next year with Louise's parents and perhaps other family, we were able to understand the potential offered by the ground floor: two cosy bedrooms with their own bathroom, with direct access to the street or upstairs to the living, dining and kitchen facilities on the second floor. It seems to us that this, together with the third floor bedroom etc. provides for an ideal combination of togetherness and privacy.

Our appreciation of the village was also further enhanced. As the owners describe, it is extremely well equipped in terms of stores and services, including two grocers (the Proxi with a wonderful selection of cheeses and other delights), two butchers, two patisseries, two hairdressers (Louise swears by Pascale for cutting her hair...) and a twice weekly market. And then there's: the drug store; a bank with ATM; a specialist outlet selling honey, jams, mustards and the like; a newsagent that carries UK papers and the NY Times; an interesting and very reasonably priced women's clothing store; and an amazingly well-stocked bookstore... mostly French volumes, but also a very good selection of English ones.

La Garde Freinet also has a mix of restaurants and cafes, none outstanding, although we enjoyed morning coffee (albeit having to request a double shot; we like it strong!) and the associated socializing at the Cafe du Soleil. (For really good food, head down the road to Grimaud and Les Santons with its Michelin star.)

Related to that, by the way, the 'operating instructions' for the house warrant special praise. Yes, reassuring information re the WiFi, kitchen appliances, BBQ and the like, but also well-considered advice about the region... restaurants, beaches, golf courses, wineries, sightseeing, etc..

So another wonderful stay. As mentioned above, we're already pondering next year...

Lovely house in the heart of the village

The house is spacious and very comfortable. It was clean, well equipped and well maintained. Perfect for our family of 4. Having stayed in few different places in La Garde Freinet, this house is definitely the best we've found.

We only had a week here in October but now, the following February, we are still reminiscing over glasses of wine. This is a superbly comfortable and well-equipped house in a wonderful location. Just the two of us, we made limited use of the ground floor and its bedrooms and bathroom. But the kitchen (with direct access into a cosy laneway) and living room, one floor up, allowed us to cook, eat and read in a very relaxed environment. Above that, an extremely comfortable bed and bedroom, an adjacent bathroom, and access to a spacious south-facing balcony where we sunbathed, read, drank coffee, tea and wine, and looked out at the hills and over LGF.

The house is set in the middle of LGF, a tangle of narrow and almost traffic-free lanes, a quiet neighbourhood despite being only 100M from the main, pedestrianized, shopping street. There's a good mix of restaurants, bars and stores, the last including a bookshop which carries a range of English-language papers and magazines. And at the end of the street is the excellent village market, two days a week.

LGF has escaped the levels of tourism focus found in the nearby towns and villages of the coast... few if any coaches, souvenir shops, motels, etc... it still seems very much a French community, with the associated charms and quirks. It is well located to visit Saint-Tropez and the coast (including some great beaches), but our excursions were mostly long hikes from the house, through great scenery including views of the coast. Then home to dinner, perhaps a little too much (excellent local) wine and calvados, and then upstairs for another great night's sleep.

Car: recommended


La Garde Freinet (LGF) is only 16 klms drive from the beach at Marine de Cogolin, and just a little further to the well-known resorts of St Tropez, Pampelone beach, Ste Maxime and Port Grimaud, with their world-famous yacht marinas, fine beaches, top restaurants, beach bars, and shops. L'Escalet Beach at Ramatuelle is recommended for snorkeling enthusiasts.


La Garde Freinet is approximately 50 minutes drive from Toulon Airport, one hour and fifteen minutes drive from Nice Airport and one and a half hours drive from Marseilles Airport. Car hire is available at all these venues and a vehicle is advised to take full advantage of all the facilities the area provides. The distance from Calais or Dunkirk is approximately 1,160 klms.


The following are all worthy of a visit: Grimaud 10 klms, Cogolin 13 klms, Port Grimaud 15 klms, Marine de Cogolin 16 klms, St Tropez 22 klms, Ste. Maxime 22 klms, Pampelonne 25 klms, Collobrieres 30 klms, La Croix-Valmer 30 klms and the world famous Gorges du Verdon which is 90 klms drive away and offers vistas of exceptional beauty as well as rafting, kayaking and climbing. Abbey du Thoronet is a beautiful restored monastery just off the A8 before the turn off to LGF.

Further Details:

The countryside around La Garde Freinet is a rambler's paradise offering a variety of signposted trails which lead nature lovers to hidden viewpoints of inland Provence. Discover the old village by taking a planned walk from the tourist office and wind through narrow lanes showing fountains, washing places, old silk worm breeding houses, olive oil mills and cork factories that dominated village life over a hundred years ago.

St Tropez market is not to be missed on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Parking at the Port is advised or in the underground car park, Place de Lices. Catching the boat to St Tropez from across the bay at St Maxime quay offers a beautiful view of the bay and is highly recommended.

While La Garde Freinet offers grocery shopping a larger weekly shop is best done at the Hypermarkets in Cogolin (Le Clerc or Lidl) or at La Foux (Casino/Geat) roundabout.

Directions by car from Nice Airport: Leave car park at T2 turning left. At roundabout follow signs for A8. At junction turn left and get into right hand lane passing the petrol station. At roundabout take the second exit signposted A8 and follow the D99 with the river on the left. At roundabout take the third exit signposted A8 to Cannes, Aix en Provence, Marseille, Antibes, Toulon. Follow onto the main A8 heading West and be careful on the slip road when joining the main autoroute. Stay on the A8 for 86 kilometres until Le Luc and leave at A57 junction for Toulon. TAKE GREAT CARE HERE AS YOU HAVE TO IMMEDIATELY LEAVE the A57 at the first junction number 13 after a only 100 yards or so - follow signs to St Tropez, La Garde Freinet (LGF) and join D558 after a couple of roundabouts. Stay on the D558 to and through LGF. Be careful on the climb to the village. When you reach the village take the first turn right and veer right past the Town Hall following the signs to parking. Turn left onto Rue de Planette and then first left after Rue de Pins downhill with Rue de Farandoule on the left. Park car.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday but we will always attempt to accommodate any special requests.
