About the Owner

Ian and Sheila McLeish have owned the property in a quietly hidden Conservation Area of Edinburgh for many years. During much of this time however they have lived and worked abroad mainly in Central America and The Sultanate of Oman. They love living in this part of the city which is extremely quiet with a true sense of community but with ease of access to both Holyrood Park where they spend much time walking with their black labrador, Monty and also to the city which is a short distance away.

great base for exploring edinburgh

  • 5 of 5

Ian and Sheila were lovely hosts, we were a group of 7 attending a friends birthday and stayed for 3 nights. The house is set in a quiet conservation area and has lovely views overlooking Arthurs seat and is only a 10 minute walk from the town centre. It was an ideal base for us, as we played golf at St Andrews and Gullane during our stay too. Can't fault it really, would definitely recommend a stay!

We had a fantastic lunch at the nearby Salisbury Arms... and also can highly recommend the Apiary as well... !

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind review of your stay with us! It was great to meet you all and delighted that your stay lived up to expectations. Number 9 Dryden Place is in the centre of Edinburgh's first conservation area, very beautiful, quiet and yet with ease of access to the city centre. There are many of Edinburgh's top tourist attractions within a short bus/taxi ride or less than 30 minutes walk for example to the Castle, Holyrood Palace and several of our famous art galleries and museums. For those who enjoy outdoor activities Arthur's Seat is almost on the doorstep and the golf courses of East Lothian around 30 minutes away by car. Local beaches are not far off in Portobello and Joppa whilst the magnificent beaches of East Lothian are within easy reach. Closer to home, the Royal Commonwealth Swimming Pool is only a 2 minute walk away. There are excellent restaurants nearby serving food from many nationalities to a very high standard. There really is something for everyone! We do hope that you will return soon. With our best wishes Ian and Sheila McLeish

Stunning Upper Apartment of Large Victorian Villa

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing stay in this apartment, which was absolutely beautiful and so spacious! Everything we required was provided. The location is excellent - quiet yet just a few minutes walk from a very good pub (Salisbury Arms) and also bus stops to take you into the city centre. We also used taxis quite frequently as we were a group of 5 and the cost was pretty much the same as the bus fare. I used the company City Cabs and the taxis always arrived within minutes! The drivers were also very knowledgeable about the best bars and restaurants to visit.

We walked from the apartment to Arthurs Seat, which was very enjoyable! We also visited the Castle and did some shopping in the Royal Mile.

I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for a place in Edinburgh, it was a real home from home and we would love to return - there are so many things we ran out of time to see and do!

Girls weekend away

  • 5 of 5

Myself and 6 friends booked this apartment for a 50th celebration in the city. The apartment is lots bigger than we imagined, and the photos don't do it justice. It is a beautiful apartment with loads of room and everything you could think of to make your stay comfortable. We loved the dining kitchen and we could all sit round the big dining table and eat together. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to book again should we need accommodation in Edinburgh. The owners made the booking process really simple and gave clear instructions re directions arrival times etc and were on hand if we had any problems - we didn't. Thank you Sheila and Ian for allowing us to book your lovely apartment and we hope to return hopefully not too far in the future.

Owner's Response: I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay at No 9 Dryden Place. The conservation area of Blacket, where Dryden Place is to be found, is a wonderful area to live with mainly Georgian houses - very quiet but only 2 minutes walk from busy streets leading to the city centre. Our visitors have all really enjoyed their stay here with many returning several times!!

Location

From the Owner

Our property is located in the Blacket Conservation Area, a small area encompassing 5 streets built in both Georgian and early Victorian times in the grounds of the now demolished Newington House in what was to become the first southern suburb of the city of Edinburgh. Lying between two major arterial roads, the area is extremely quiet with very little through traffic. However, there a large number of bus routes only a short walk away with routes which will take you to most areas of Edinburgh. If you prefer more outdoor pursuits, Arthurs Seat ( the mountain within a city) and Salisbury Crags are within easy walking distance and golf is available at Priestfield Golf Club. The completely refurbished Commonwealth Swimming Pool is 5 minutes walk away. This should reopen in the spring of 2012.

Facilities

From the Owner

The houses of this area are very fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture. Number 9 Dryden Place was built in the 1860s and has a wealth of Victorian features, high ceilings, large rooms, intricate cornicing and working shutters.Careful upgrading however, ensures a well designed kitchen/dining room with all fitted modern appliances and bath / shower rooms. The house was divided many years ago and the property available for rent forms the upper 2 floors of this large building. The views from the windows to the front of the house are quite spectacular, looking onto the hills of Holyrood Park. To the back, the views are over the gardens of Blacket to the Pentland Hills beyond. The city centre, the hills and many local amenities make this a great place to work and play!
