The house was originally built in 1700s and has the horseshoe nailed floor in the front bedroom to prove it, the walls are wattle and daub on the outside and in the top bedroom. A fabulous location for visiting vineyards, fishing, golf, and walking and visiting the many 'bastide' towns in the area. There is a fabulous swimming lake about 10 km away towards Lougratte. It has a 'beach' bar, waterslides etc, you pay a day rate.

I live in England, in the Northwest. We did the house up from a total mess to what it is now, the area is wonderful and the local people are super. It is an area to explore and enjoy, as is full of history, Plantagenets and Eleonor of Aquitaine. Fascinating for those interested in medieval history!

It was exactly what we expected but better presented and better equipped. Perfect for what is a lovely town or Bastide. The shops and restaurants, bars are all within walking distance. It is also ideal for ranging the Dordoyne Region. We had a wonderful time.

Beautiful property full of character and charm.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 day stay at this delightful property which is very well equipped, warm and cosy especially with the log-burning stove. There is also a good internet connection. The bedrooms are spacious, extremely comfortable with beautiful beams adding a unique feel to each room. The property was immaculate. Every morning we walked to the local shops to purchase gorgeous croissant and baguettes. My husband enjoyed practising his French to the amusement of the shopkeepers who were always very welcoming. Our days were spent visiting the local markets where we found it impossible to resist the home-grown produce. We took a train journey to Bordeaux where we explored the City and enjoyed an excellent leisurely lunch at the Brasserie Bordelaise (Rue S. Remi). We took time to visit Monpazier ( beautiful ceramics) and the stunning Chateau Mombazillac (amazing views). Our last day was spent in Bergerac which was delightful. A walk by the river and yet another wonderful lunch. This is great place to stay, plenty to do or if you prefer - relax in the local bars and enjoy the wine!

Third visit to this wonderful house!

This is a beautiful house with very spacious bedrooms, a large sitting room and lovely kitchen/diner. Superbly equipped including the BBQ in the pretty courtyard (a real suntrap!). It has always been immaculate on arrival. Villereal is a lovely town with a beautiful market place and market. Fantastic restaurants (reasonably priced) nearby and nice bars too. Lovely bakeries for croissants and pan au chocolats! I've stayed here with elderly parents (one on crutches), with children and for a girly break and this super property suited all. I'd definitely recommend it.

A Family visit

I've titled this to declare an interest & also why only 4 star from me. I am the brother of the owner. On this occasion we drove down to assist with decorating and general tidying up after some building work.sort of a working holiday. We used the large log burner as main heat and I can confirm the newly installed WiFi works perfectly on all floors. This is the 2nd time we have visited Villereal; both times choosing to drive down as the drive being part of the experience. Positives and negatives are, in no particular order: The premises are ideal for a family with either two older children (requiring their own rooms) or more younger children who would share bedrooms; or three separate couples-one per large double bedroom each. The kitchen area is a bit small for more than three people to work in. But tghere is plenty of space to spread out. if you are an elderly guest (we are 60 plus and managed it) you might be advised to take over one of the first floor bedrooms. The top floor is wonderfully quirky, but the stairs may be challenging. For the younger guest these are not an issue. There is a great courtyard at the rear for when it is warm enough for sitting outside. The house is situated within approx 500 yards from the market place and local shops. A wonderful market experience awaits you. There are several restaurants nearby should you wish to eat out, all reasonably priced. When we visited we have travelled fairly widely visiting the beautiful small Bastide towns in the area and a few of the local cities...all are great, especially if you hit market day! personally we cannot wait to return to this lovely unspoilt area of France. Do try it!

We chose Villereal because it is in one of the most beautiful areas of France, rolling countryside with fields of sunflowers, woods full of mushrooms and game, and the many beautiful 'bastide' towns to visit. Superb for walking, sightseeing, mushroom hunting,vineyard visiting and of course, eating. Villereal is a proper town, not totally dependant on tourism, so is a much more true example of French life.

Special interest holidays:

Bicycles can be rented from Garage Boucheyrou, 2 minutes walk from the house at the entrance to Hotel du Lac. Phone number is 0033553360121.

Travel:

Bergerac is the closest airport, with flights from Ryanair and Flybe. Other airports would be Toulouse, Bordeaux, Limoges. If flying in, would need to rent a car. Parking in Villereal is free, and if you find a space, you can park just outside the house. If driving down, the distance is about 10 hours drive from Calais, 9 hours from Caen.

Distances:

76 kms east to Bordeaux, 20 kms to Bergerac, the 'bastide' towns of Issegeac, Marmont, Beaumont, Castillones, Monflanquin, and many other characteristic towns are within 10-35 kms away.

Further Details:

There are 2 bars in the main square, a small supermarket called 'huit a huit', 3 bakeries, 2 butchers, 2 pharmacies, several hairdressers and four or five restaurants within walking distance from the house. There is a big supermarket on the outskirts of town and a petrol station. A superb market on Wednesdays (high season) and every Saturday morning. Look out for the Paella man (makes it fresh and it goes in a flash) and the chicken/quail/poussin roasting man for a fab lunch. Fruit, veg, fish, and then local products such as duck and prunes. The Tourist office under the arches in the main square has a weekly bulletin on 'what's on' in the area and exceedingly helpful. In the summer they do Fete Regional with local suppliers, food and music and folkdancing. They also have bands on in the square during the summer, and there is also horse racing just on the outskirts of town

From the Owner

The house is only 350 yards from Villereal's main square, and its restaurants. It is really a lock-up and leave place, more suited for adults rather than for children. There is no problem parking (except for market day) and parking is free. During July and August, the market is on Monday and Wednesday each week. There are horse races at the racetrack towards the end of July. There are regular concerts and Fetes Regionale in the main square in July and August. Always lots to do!! The area is absolutely stunning and there is plenty to see and do.
