About the property

Totally secluded cottage in idyllic rural location, enjoying completely private pool and glorious garden. Underfloor heating/wood burner for cooler times

The cottage, which is lovingly restored, was the original early 19th century farmhouse. It has an intimate atmosphere, with beams, winding oak staircase and stone fireplace, where extra care has been taken to retain its original features. Cool in summer, with underfloor heating and wood burner for winter, the cottage provides high standards of comfort and amenity.

The bedroom features high ceilings and superking sized bed, with ensuite "walk in" shower, WC and handbasin. The downstairs accommodation comprises a fully equipped kitchen (gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher, fridge (with freezer compartment), toaster, iron and ironing board, microwave, and washing in adjacent building)). All windows in the property enjoy views of the glorious garden or fields.

To the rear of the cottage there is a terrace immediately accessible from the sitting room, which looks out over the surrounding fields to the woods in the distance.

The property is not overlooked, being ideally located off a quiet country lane.

Puylagarde is a small, typically French, rural village, and the cottage enjoys views of its beautiful garden setting as well as undulating fields and woods. The cottage adjoins a vine shaded terrace with BBQ which leads onto the heated pool (which is enclosed by a dry stone wall giving complete privacy and for your sole use). Other intimate sitting areas include an authentic "folly" overlooking a Petanque court.

Historic 13th century Caylus, set on a French hillside and 10 minutes drive away, is a small town with all amenities including restaurants, bank and shops. Najac - one of the 140 most beautiful villages of France - and St Antonin Noble Val - used as a location for the movie Charlotte Gray - are within 25 minutes drive.

About Stephen Cheshire

We took on L'Oulet as a derelict farmhouse, cottage and outbuildings in 2003, which had not been lived in since the 1940s. Since then, we have slowly undertaken a full restoration of the Farmhouse and Cottage.

We chose L'Oulet for its stunning location which typifies rural France at its very best - a place where we could truly relax and enjoy with our family and friends.

Whilst the Cottage is cosy and comfortable, being well equipped and furnished to a high standard, you will spend most of your stay outside enjoying the pool and beautiful garden setting. The surrounding villages and countryside offer great variety for those wishing to explore further and/or get active.

Notes on accommodation: The cottage is ideal for a couple (with or without baby) looking for a relaxing, rural retreat. Smokers are kindly requested to smoke outside only. Outside: The farmhouse and cottage are set in grounds of approx 1.5 acres. The cottage itself sits to the rear of the farmhouse in a sunny location. It enjoys a dual aspect: a stunning courtyard garden to the front, with views over fields and woodland to the rear. The courtyard garden is beautifully maintained and stocked with traditional plants and shrubs. The heated salt pool is surrounded by a traditional stone wall, giving total privacy. There are sunloungers and umbrellas for your use. The vine covered terraced area located between the pool and the cottage is equipped with chairs, a table, and 2 loungers, together with BBQ. The terrace to the rear of the cottage also has a table and chairs. Within the grounds is a lovely traditional "folly" for an afternoon nap, evening drinks or game of petanque. The remaining gardens largely comprise lawn and trees, including a picturesque tree lined driveway. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included. Cleaning is between lets, with the pool and garden being regularly maintained. Other: As well as the vine covered terrace to the side, the cottage enjoys a rear terraced area with table and chairs accessible from the back door which enjoys lovely views over fields and woodland. Also a folly, perfect for a zizz or your 6pm "sundowner"!

Perfect Away From It All Retreat For A Couple

We have had a wonderful week at this perfect cottage. Everything here truly is of the highest standard; the linen, the furniture, the little curios, the pictures, the utensils, the welcome pack. Everything is clean, well stocked and in good order. All that and the totally private pool. Expect exactly what you see in the photographs but I don't think they do the interior of the cottage full justice.

The cottage and the pool are situated at the back of the property so anyone who stays has total privacy. The only occasional road noise from the distant lane is an agricultural vehicle; mostly, all you hear are the birds and the buzzing of the insects. The cottage has a beautiful garden and with the surrounding fields you are very much in the heart of nature and it's wonderful!

L'Oulet is just over a mile outside the village of Puylagarde, a lovely walk. There are no bars or restaurants in the village so if you are looking for easily accessible eateries or entertainment then this is not the place for you. However, you can get to Villefranche easily by car and stock up and there are restaurants a convenient drive away.

We had the most relaxing holiday I think we have ever had. We will always remember it as one of the best. We had excellent weather while we were there which made the experience truly perfect. We truly intend to go back and enjoy this beautiful property again and would recommend it to anyone.

Peaceful Location

“Thank you for the welcome pack and the wine! The cottage is absolutely beautiful and so homely and welcoming. The pool is perfect and the garden a delight! Enjoyed dead heading flowers whilst pottering around with glass of wine in hand!

We have enjoyed thoroughly the beautiful surroundings and have visited many villages in our search for our own home here in this area.

We have enjoyed returning to the cottage every afternoon to relax by the lovely pool and BBQ every night. We have loved it all – thank you.”

A dream

What a delightful contrast. We just left Bergerac in the Dordogne after a hectic week with our two excitable grandsons. To come and find this wonderful spot was a dream. Many thanks for the welcome pack and the helpful hints. The weather has been so good and it has been great to return to the pool after a trip to see the “most beautiful villages”.

I enjoyed tinkering in the garden but have realised I overlooked the roses around the main steps – all other garden flowers have been dead-headed and the vine has been watered well. I did a couple of paintings from the rear garden – I hope you enjoy them.

Will definitely want to come again!

perfect home from home

The cottage is delightful and feels like a home rather than a holiday let It has everything you could need and more .The garden is lovely and there is a really good sparkling pool. Lots of different spots to sit in to read or just dream .Very good walks just out of the gate in some shady woods.There are lots of bastides to visit all under an hours drive away,recommend the market at Villefranche de Roueruge on thursday.

Puylagarde is a village with a small shop that includes an excellent bakery. It is about a 20 minute walk from the property (or 5 minutes in the car).

A car is essential to facilitate purchasing a greater range of groceries and for availing yourself of the wonderful surroundings (see below).

Special interest holidays:

In the vicinity, it is possible to visit Chateau Cenevieres, St Cirq Lapopie, Grotte de Pech Merle, or Canto Perlic Vineyard which may appeal - all less than (approx 25 miles away). The medieval bastide towns of Najac (25 minutes drive) and Cordes (40 minutes drive) are also particularly worth a visit. Albi (1 hours drive) has its famous Toulouse Lautrec museum and historic cathedral - a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For the more active, it is possible to go canoeing or white water rafting on the Aveyron, undertake casual walking or hiking locally or indeed in the Lot/Averyon valleys. For keen cyclists, the local countryside offers idyllic yet peaceful - largely traffic free - roads/tracks. If interested, please feel free to contact the owner for access to bicycles.

Gastronomically, the region is famous for its Gaillac and Cahors wines. The Sunday market at St Antonin Noble Val and Limogne, and the Thursday market at Villefrance-de-Rouergue are also well worth a visit.


It is approx. a 3 hour drive to the Mediterranean. Locally, however, there are rivers and lakes which provide good sunbathing and picnicking opportunities.


Puylagarde is located in the Tarn-et-Garonne in the Midi Pyrenees region of France. The closest airport is Rodez (55 minutes drive) which from the UK is serviced by Ryanair from Stansted. Slightly further afield is Toulouse-Blagnac, an international airport (1.45 hours drive), with other regional airports being Bergerac (2.5 hours drive) and Carcassonne (2.20 hours drive).

Travel by train is possible to Toulouse where you could either hire a car, or investigate onward trains to Caussade.

Caussade: 30 minutes by car.

Villefranche-de-Rouergue: 18 minutes by car.

St Antonin Noble Val: 25 minutes by car.

Montauban and Cahors: 40 minutes by car.

Further Details:

Caylus has an historic square with ancient market place. It's church is also of architectural interest. Market days are also in operation.

St Antonin-Noble-Val is located on the Aveyron River. It is a medieval town with winding backstreets leading to a picturesque square, which hosts a great market on Sunday. It also has a cinema which does show English films from time to time.

Caussade is a market town renowned nationally as one of the primary millinery towns of France. It holds a "festival of hats" in July.

There are ruined Cathar castles at Bruniquel and Penne. More locally, there is the Abbaye de Beaulieu and the Abbaye de Loc-Dieu.

Finally, for a gastronomique treat, the owners particularly enjoy a visit to Le Vieux-Pont at Belcastel. This Michellin starred restaurant overlooks the Averyon.
