Fowey - Pet friendly cottage in heart of Cornish sailing town with river views

Updated: 13-Oct-2016
Comfortably sleeps 4 - located 2 mins walk from quayside restaurants & traditional pubs - 15 mins walk to beach

Riverside Cottage is 200 years old and is beautifully presented boasting period features including oak floors, wooden beams and stone walls yet offers Wi-Fi and central heating. It is in the heart of Fowey which is a vibrant sailing community surrounded by beautiful countryside with sandy beaches at Polkerris, Readymoney Cove & Par, which is dog-friendly all year round. It is perfect for families, dog-lovers & fans of all things nautical.

Highlights of the year are the Royal sailing regatta and the Fowey Festival. The town boasts a wide range of designer shops, restaurants to suit all tastes and pubs full of character. A passenger ferry makes regular trips across the River Fowey to the adjacent village of Polruan or take a ferry to the fishing village of Mevagissey across St Austell Bay. A car ferry from Fowey gives easy access to the popular resorts of Polperro and Looe. Just 38 miles south of Plymouth and a 45 minute drive to Newquay Airport, there is also easy access to the national rail network from the nearby village of Par. It is a great area for cycling and is just 15 minutes drive to the world-famous Eden Project, a 30 minute drive to the Lost Gardens of Helligan and a 40 minute drive to the cathedral city of Truro.

The cottage boasts a large master bedroom with kingsize bed which can be split into two full-size single beds. On the top of this three-storey house there is also a second double bedroom. The cottage offers a large luxury bathroom with free standing bath and a drench-style shower. On the third floor the living room - which has riverside views - has two sofas, a TV, a HiFi system with aux input as well as a well-stocked library of books, games & DVDs.

The kitchen is equipped with a fridge, freezer, oven, microwave, dishwasher & cafetiere. A secure, dog-proof courtyard also houses a washing machine and tumble dryer. The dining room at the front of the house has a table seating 6 people.

There is no parking at the property but there is a large car park just along the river. You can stop outside the house to load and unload your car.

if you are bringing a dog with you at an additional cost of £20 per week. A 40% deposit is payable on booking with the balance due one month before arrival.

About the Owner

Riverside cottage is a family business - owned by Daniel and Guy Mead and managed by their mother, Debbie. We have holidayed in Cornwall all our lives and own two dogs and know how difficult it can be to find good quality accommodation which accepts dogs. That is why we are happy for visitors to bring their dogs along - there is a small charge but it works out much cheaper than kennels. And with so many beautiful walks and an all-year round dog friendly beach nearby who would want to leave their pet behind? We also provide Wi-Fi as it is good to keep in touch when away. Debbie is a marriage registrar and a journalist and lives locally, up river in nearby Golant. She is always on hand to sort out problems and offer advice based on her local knowledge when needed.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The cottage is gorgeous - very cosy and a real home-from-home. The Lost Gardens of Heligan makes for a lovely way to pass four hours followed by a cream team in their restaurant. There are so many beaches and places to walk - our dog has been in heaven. We'll definitely be back." Caroline and Mike from Clutton near Bristol.

"Everyone is going home with only happy memories of a lovely week in Fowey and, in particular, Riverside Cottage. It's a really great home-from-home and you have thought of everything a visitor could ask for. I am sure we will see this little cottage again, so does Meg the dog who ran herself ragged on Readymoney Beach." Terri and Ian, Bedfordshire.

"Do we have to go home? Have had a fabulous week. Our Staffie had been on so many great walks. Had some good food and made lots of new friends here. Most of Cornwall is within easy driving distance. Thanks very much for letting us stay in this cosy cottage, we'll be back soon." Liz, Paul and Tyler.

Perfect location in a well provisioned cottage

  • 4 of 5

Fowey is a lovely Cornish fishing village with plenty of places to eat & drink & purchase artisan/craft items. It is also a dog-friendly place so no more kennel guilt. The cottage is situated in the middle of the town & so has easy access to the town's attractions. The cottage has everything you might need & was clean & tidy. The owner was helpful & friendly & we have mailed her directly with the few quibbles/suggestions we have . 4* because the bedding/towels/soft furnishings could have been of a bit higher quality. A pity because the bath & shower were first class & it would have been nice to wrap up afterwards in something nice & fluffy. Overall I would recommend this as a good place to stay in a lovely part of the world & I would stay there again.

Owner's Response: Thanks for that review. Unfortunately, it is the end of the season and the soft furnishings do get a bit tired. I am planning a spending spree to replace them in the very near future!!

Wonderful Stay in a lovely cottage, central to all that Fowey has to offer

  • 5 of 5

Had a great week, despite poor weather at times. The cottage is central to Fowey, overlooking the beautiful estuary and Polruan in the distance. It is also within a very short walk to shops, restaurants, bakeries and shops selling all number of goods. A lovely stay and great we could bring the dog, who was as exhausted as us at the end of each. Cottage is exactly as described and is a perfect base for exploring this lovely part of the world. Loved it - thank you.

Lovely property.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was spacious and well equipped with fabulous views from the lounge window. It was ideal for dogs as hard flooring made it easy to wipe up any muddy/wet paw prints after visits to the beach or coastal walks. There is a great beach just a few minutes drive away which does not have any restrictions for dogs and which is clearly popular with dog owners. The beds were very comfortable and there is plenty of storage for clothes etc.The bathroom has a really powerful shower and a huge bath. The property's location means it is only a very short walk to the shops, restaurants and ferry. There are some nice walks from Fowey, in particular, the Hall walk which makes use of both the Polruan and the Bodinnick ferries. There are lots of things to see and do within easy driving distance and we enjoyed trips to the lost gardens of Heligan, Charlestown, Mevagissy, Lostwithiel and Padstow. Many of the cafes, pubs and restaurants in the area are very dog friendly.

Our overall view of Riverside Cottage was that it was very cosy and great location for town centre.

  • 3 of 5

Overall we all enjoyed our stay at Riverside cottage which is ideally placed for walking into the beautiful centre of Fowey. We did however feel that the cottage could be improved by replacing some of the older furnishings which were looking a little tired, especially both of the lounge sofas and the old style TV which had a tendency to suddenly switch itself off and required rebooting to correct this problem. In the kitchen, most of the coffee mugs were chipped and drinking glasses comprised of a mixture of old oddments, there also seemed to be a mish mash of old cutlery thrown in the kitchen drawer with lack of teaspoons.

Apologies for the negatives but this cottage, that is commanding a high end price, really should be presented a little better and requires only a minimum amount of new investment to transform it into something really special.

Owner's Response: Thanks for this very helpful review and we will look into your comments regarding replacing furniture as the cottage has its annual refurbishment in January. The chipped mugs have now been replaced and more teaspoons supplied - apologies for that. You are the first visitor to make us aware of the problem with the TV so we will get it checked out - you did stay over new year which was a very stormy week when there were a lot of brief power cuts in the area due to the exceptionally high winds - so it may have been due to that.

Feels like home

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay here and would definitely reccommend it. The house is really close to the 'centre' of Fowey- just along the tiny one-way main road- and but a couple of minutes from the best breakfasts in town (Pinky Murphy's)... not that you'll need to go there because the kitchen here is great and allowed us to make our own meals and enjoy them at the house. There's wifi and the beds were comfy- what more could we ask>! Our only issue was that one of our group is very tall- 6ft+.... and the ceilings in some of the rooms caught him out. But it's an old cottage in Fowey- pretty much inevitable! Had a great stay, will certainly come back- thanks again
