This old farmhouse has been updated with all the modern conveniences you'd look for in a holiday home. The 12m by 6m pool is for your exclusive use. Its shallow end stays shallow for 5 metres, making it an ideal pool to start learning to swim in. The property is not overlooked. St Severin and Aubeterre, listed as one of the prettiest villages in France, are about a 5 minute drive away. Riberac and Chalais both have excellent markets and are about a 20 minute drive. Wine lovers will be spoilt for choice with Bergerac, Bordeaux, Cognac and St Emilion all about 90 minutes drive. Golf is 2km away at Manoir de Longeveau with its welcoming bar and restaurant. Walking, cycling, canoeing and swimming at lakeside and river beaches are all accessible in the area. There are numerous excellent restaurants in the area. The gite is ideally situated for those wanting to escape the traffic and explore the Charente and the adjoining Dordogne, which is just 8km away. Well-behaved pets welcome. About Ginny Steel

Ginny & David Steel retired from Cambridgeshire in the UK to France in July 2011. They live full time in the adjoining barn, which has its own garden and patio areas - so your privacy is not compromised. However, they are there for advice and guidance should you need it.

Why Ginny Steel chose Charente

The countryside is so beautiful. The traffic is almost non-existent. The climate is great - not too hot in summer and in winter it's about 6 degrees warmer then the UK The sun shines most days.

What makes this house unique

Here you're in the middle of the countryside, yet a short drive to the town. There's no pollution and the sky at night has more stars to see than you ever imagined existed. Food is very important to the French, and the produce on sale at local markets is superb. Free range eggs are on sale at the farm up the road. The small shopkeeper/owner still thrives here and the service they provide - with a smile - is second to none.

Notes on accommodation: A Welcome Pack of basic food and drinks is provided at the start of each stay. Outside: The 12m by 6m pool is there for the exclusive use of our guests. Table tennis table and swings on the lawn by the pool. Sun loungers are provided plus a BBQ with charcoal, two outdoor tables and chairs. A large canopy can be drawn over the courtyard table on those days when the sun is just too hot. There is ample parking for up to 3 guest vehicles. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are included and changed weekly. The property is cleaned once a week.

Wonderfully relaxing location with a fabulous pool

The gite was well proportioned with all 3 bedrooms being of a good size with decent storage space. The kitchen was very well equipped with everything that you could need and all in good working order. The beds were very comfortable and the fans provided ensured good ventilation despite a mini heatwave!

The pool was fabulous and well maintained, being cleaned religiously by David!

The views of the rolling hills were lovely from the poolside. With huge sunflower fields at every turn. The black kites circled and called overhead and one night we were visited by a lovely big hedgehog!

David and Ginny were very accommodating with our two border collies - and were also extremely helpful in directing us to local amenities including a garage when we had a flat tyre.

Aubeterre is a real gem - and only a few minutes easy drive. Not only is it super pretty but is stacked full of excellent, varied restaurants and buzzy little bars. Also great for going canoeing on the Drone river.

We visited Sarat, Cognac Angouleme and Bramtone together with many chateaux's and places of interest including the markets at Chalias and Riberac. Overall, a great location with welcoming hosts and a fantastic gite.

I would have no doubt in heartily recommending a holiday at Ginnys Gite and have no doubt that we will return in the near future

Really nice place

We have spent our holidays in villas around France for about 10 years and Ginny's Gite is one of the nicest houses and locations we have found. The pool is a real feature and kept the kids happy, and is big enough to do lengths without the usual splash, splash, turn we have become used to.

The house is very well maintained, everything works and doesn't have that tired unloved feel that so many rental villas seem to have. It's also a successful conversion, very pretty inside and out and has plenty of space.

The surrounding countryside is stunning, with rolling hills and mainly arable farming, but some livestock for extra interest.

David and Ginny are fairly invisible, and seem to be genuinely nice people and happy to chat and provide any help and advice you need. This really helps in focussing what you should do with your time.

So, nothing negative. It's a quiet area, but there are enough nice restaurants in the pretty village of Aubeterre to provide variety, and enough shops in St Severin to keep you stocked up with bread and pastry. St Emillion is worth a visit even if you are not bothered about the wine, but what are the chances of that?

Ginnys gite

We had a great week in Ginny,s gite and would highly recommend it to anyone considering a holiday in the area. The gite is very well equipped, well maintained and full of character, and has the benefit of great outdoor space with a brilliant pool and sunbathing area.

The location is ideal for exploring the surrounding areas as you have both the Charente Maritime and the Dordogne within easy reach, plus you are only an hour away from Bordeaux if you fancy a day out in a really lively and beautiful city.

Ginny and David are the perfect hosts as they are friendly, informative and there if you need them in an unobtrusive way.

We have been visiting France for 20 years now and Ginny,s gite is right up there with the most ideal places we have stayed in.

Fantastic Place

We first visited Ginny's gite in August 2012 and we had such an amazing time that we went back again this year.

The Gite itself is beautiful, clean and well maintained. We spent several days enjoying the pool and gardens, but also found it was a good base to explore the region. We were greeted by the owners on arrival (Ginny and David) who were very welcoming and very kind to help us with directions and point places out that were worth a visit.

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is only about a 10 min drive away with a great selection of restaurants and shops and where we also hired canoes. Bergerac was a little further 45mins-1hour drive but well worth a visit.

I would recommend this place very highly and am already looking forward to planning our next visit.
