Cottage in Hayfield, Derbyshire, Peak District, England - Looking For Something Different? Part Of A Smallholding Of Several Acres

Farlands Cottage in the heart of the Peak District is a great place to stay at all times of the year. It is close to the village of Hayfield, and in a stunning location - the BBC series 'The Village' was filmed around here. It can be a quiet atmospheric retreat – it has a log fire, and is well-equipped. But, equally, there is always lots to do and see. The Cottage is the left-hand wing of the impressive 19th century Farlands House. It is comfortable and homely; ideal for recovering from a hard day in the outdoors, or from life in general! Relax with a BBQ, or in front of the log fire in the living room.

We can now offer:-

1. accompanied walks - if you want some help with route-finding, carrying your gear or just want a gentle commentary on the local landscape.

2. smallholding tours - 2 tours available: Highlights (1 hour) and the Full Tour (2 hours)

3. The Green tour (new!) - see and discuss in detail the biomass boiler (wood pellets), the solar panels, the water system, energy efficiency and recycling. All based on a greener, more sustainable way of life.

If you are looking to change the way you live, then this tour may gave you some ideas.

Free range eggs are available to buy along with Farlands comb honey.

About the Owner

My wife Sarah works in Manchester, while I work from home.

I run our smallholding which we are busily developing. We have a large veg garden, a young orchard, a fruit tree nursery, over 250 trees (lots of bird boxes), bees, chickens and turkeys.

We are keen on a more sustainable way of life; we have installed PV (solar panels), and have changed our oil heating system to wood pellet (biomass).

I am an independent writer and have written for Living Woods, Smallholder, Climber and Summit magazines. I have written a memoir, Cop Down, and a trilogy of novels about a fictional DCI. Looking for a publisher!

We love the walking from the door. We are keen mountaineers and backpackers.

We often chat with our guests, and we welcome new ideas, and look forward to discussing both our and your plans and aspirations.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We really enjoyed our stay, brilliant location with country walks from our doorstep! Thanks again for your hospitality."

"Fantastic week! Walked over to Edale via South Head and round the reservoir... loved the open fires and the Sportsman Pub."

"James, thanks for a great stay – the cottage was just right, cosy and character-full and more than fulfilled our hopes. We came to appreciate the luxury of the dishwasher after Christmas dinner, and real flames in the evening."

Idyllic location above Hayfield and below Kinder Scout.

Lovely cottage to retreat back into at the end of a cold winter's day. Cosy, lovely and warm. Well maintained with everything you would want or need.

Perfect for our walking break

  • 5 of 5

Farlands Cottage is clean and comfortable and provided an ideal base for walking in the High Peaks. James was responsive and helpful through the booking process and made us feel welcome upon arrival. Highly recommended.

Great location with fantastic walks!

  • 4 of 5

Very clean and functional cottage in a great location. Good kitchen facilities and nice to have an open fire. The decor of the cottage was quite old fashioned but cosy and comfortable. The owner was very welcoming and helpful. The surrounding countryside was beautiful and we would have liked to stay longer to discover more lovely walks.

A lovely cottage with a welcoming host just off the main track to Kinder.

  • 5 of 5

We had a warm welcome from James who during our time at the cottage showed us around his small holding and proved to be an amazing advocate of self sufficiency. Our girls were enthralled by the experience and James had an answer to all their questions (even the gory ones). They learnt a lot from the experience.

The cottage had a wonderful setting just off the main path to Kinder yet seemingly in a hidden valley all of its own. The cottage was well equipped and perfect for our stay.

"Stunning" doesn't cover it

  • 5 of 5

We’ve stayed in many holiday cottages over the years and this one ranks among the very best. From the moment we walked up to the mullioned windows and into the clean, comfy, high-ceilinged living room with its lit Christmas tree and the pack of mince pies and welcome card on the table, we knew we were in for a treat. The open fire and superb shower were fantastic, as was the very efficient central heating system (hardly needed while we were there!), but it was the views and location that made this place truly special. You can walk onto a footpath from the front door and head up to Kinder Reservoir and Kinder Scout, or you can go the other way across airy tops to the pretty village of Hayfield which is well worth an explore. We ate twice at the Sportsman Inn (a 15-minute walk from the cottage), which serves a very good pint of Thwaites and great food – we had Barnsley chop and roast pheasant, both of which were very tasty and good value. We also cooked at the cottage, which has everything you could possibly need, including a state-of-the-art hob and a sink with views so lovely that we fought over whose turn it was to do the washing up! There are bats roosting nearby and owls hooting in the woods at night; you truly couldn’t wish for a more idyllic spot. The owners are attentive and helpful without being intrusive and there is a wealth of books, DVDs, games and information at the cottage to keep you entertained on those cosy evenings by the roaring fire. It was a privilege to be able to stay in this lovely place. Oh, blast – I was going to write a rotten review of Farlands to put everyone off and ensure that we could keep it exclusively ours, but I couldn’t help myself!

A perfect New Year getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, plus some friends, have just returned from a wonderful stay at Farland's cottage. This place is ideal if you are looking to get away from it all and be amongst some of the most stunning scenery imaginable.

The cottage is well equipped - we stayed in to cook on NYE and found everything we needed in the kitchen. The beds are comfortable and the cottage is warm and cosy with plenty of firewood supplied by James to keep us going (along with eggs from his chickens!). There was also plenty of hot water and a powerful shower which was very much needed after our trek up to Kinder Scout (thanks both :-) )

It's a beautiful place and James & Sarah are the perfect hosts. To see what James has achieved in his garden and to see his eco friendly approach to running the cottage is inspirational and we shall definitely be returning soon!

There is plenty of information provided in advance (and even more when you arrive) in terms of places to eat, walks (guided by James or not) and other attractions. We ate at a local pub on the first night (a 10 minute car journey and great food at the Lamb) - but the place is so peaceful that we were reluctant to venture too far from the peace and comfort of our immediate surroundings.

Would definitely recommend!

Location

From the Owner

We moved to Hayfield in 2004 for the hills – fantastic walking, and some climbing. But, it is still only 25 mins and 45 mins from the culture of Buxton and Manchester respectively. We moved to Farlands in 2010 (the holiday cottage is attached to our house) because it is even closer to the hills (3 footpaths from the door), and is a unique property in a truly stunning location. We will not be moving again!

Activity and Interests

Travel:

45 mins by car to Manchester airport.

Distances:

The attractive village of Hayfield is only 1½ miles (a pleasant 20 min walk, 6 mins cycling (downhill, 12 mins back up) or 4 mins by car.

Local places of interest include Lyme Park, Chatsworth, Bakewell and Buxton (opera house and weekly markets). Manchester with its many cultural highlights (inc. Bridgewater Hall, the Lowry, Manchester Art Gallery) is only 45 mins (10 mins by car plus 35 mins by train).

Further Details:

Sorry, no smoking and no pets.

The closest pub (which also does food) is only half a mile away. The village has lots of amenities (PO, chemist, chip shop, newsagent, greengrocer, general food shop, antiques shop, DR's surgery, restaurant, several pubs and a tea shop). There is a stream that runs through the village with ducks etc. The stream runs past the village cricket square and the Royal pub.

There is fantastic walking from the holiday cottage. There is a local OS map and guide books in the cottage, and we can send you off in the right direction. We now also offer accompanied walks - showing you some of the locals' footpaths, helping you carry your gear and telling you something about the local area. Please see Cottage website for further details.

In 2012 we replaced our two oil boilers with a state-of-the-art wood pellet boiler (biomass) that runs both our house and the Cottage. This involved an extension to contain the boiler and the 4-tonne hopper. As a result we are (effectively) zero consumers of non-renewable energy:- the wood pellets supply heating and hot water, PV panels supply the electricity (on a yearly basis), we have spring water and use septic tanks.

Accompanied walks - further details on cottage website.

Treatments and Massages - if you are interested in these, then please email for further info and a price list.

Smallholding Tours - more details on cottage website

- meet the livestock

- see the large veg garden

- visit the orchard

- tour the tree projects

- discuss the green energy systems

We can also usually sort out the following to make your stay even more special / different:- chocolates, champagne, baby-sitting, weekend papers, lifts back from local pubs / restaurants, a breakfast tray (mainly home-made and local produce) and dinner at Farlands House (ie with us! - 3 courses including wine).
