Cottage in Millbeck, Keswick, England - Peaceful Location At The Foot Of Skiddaw With All Home Comforts And Excellent Walking From The Door

Underskiddaw Cottage is part of a converted Lakeland mill situated at the foot of Skiddaw, just above the hamlet of Millbeck 2 miles north of Keswick. The cottage is beautifully appointed with full central heating, a multi-fuel stove in the lounge and lots of character including exposed stone, thick walls, sash windows, exposed beams and solid oak flooring. Internet access is also available. The sheltered patio garden is the perfect location for summer barbeques. Accessed via a short tarmac track, the cottage is in a tranquil, woodland setting but within a short drive of the charming market town of Keswick which has a wide range of amenities including a swimming pool, cinema and its famous Theatre by the Lake. Walking from the cottage is outstanding with immediate access to Skiddaw and the Dodd Wood area with a short drive into the Newlands Valley opening up a further range of excellent hills in the north west Lakes.

Another great visit

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Underskiddaw cottage and we enjoyed it just as much as the first time. A beautiful cottage with all the home comforts you could wish for. We found some great new walks and even found the route down to the Pheasant through all the fields. Looking forward to returning again next year.

Underskiddaw is a very comfortable, well equipped cottage, exactly right for two.

  • 5 of 5

Underskiddaw isn't so much under Skiddaw, as some way up it, so you can walk straight out of the forecourt and you're well on your way. It's quiet and peaceful, but close enough to Keswick for shops, pubs and fish and chips.

The cottage is fine for two adults, although more than two might be a bit of a squeeze.

A cozy, comfortable cottage in an amazing location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Underskiddaw. It’s much more lovely than it looks in the pictures. It was really warm and cozy for the frightfully cold weather we had. The kitchen is really well stocked out to make nice meals at home and there was plenty of space for our family of 5. It was super clean, comfortable and well thought out with hanging space for coats, storage for muddy boots and lots of drying space. There’s no dishwasher, but the fluffy towels, feather bedding, lovely fireplace, ample DVD selection and the milk, biscuits, soap and washing up supplies all completely made up for it! The house is in a perfect location for exploring the north area of the Lakes - there are brilliant walks right from the front door, the walk up Latrigg is very close and well worth it for the views. It’s close to Keswick to be very convenient for shopping (we had a Sainsbury’s grocery delivery on our first day) but so so much more atmospheric than staying in town. The walls around Keswick and the lake are superb, as was Buttermere lake and Grasmere. The honister slate mine tour was great for the kids on a snowy, freezing day. We’d stay in this house again, in a flash.

Stunning location, perfect stay!!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 3 nights. Property had everything that we needed. Stunning location with amazing walks right on the doorstep. Only a short drive from Keswick so not to remote. We would definitely recommend and will be staying again.

Wonderful little cottage with everything you need and a dog friendly back patio.

  • 4 of 5

We stayed as a family of 5 in this lovely cottage which is fully equipped with everything you need, just missing a pub nearby so us parents don't end up cooking all the time or one of you having to drive. The first day we walked Dodd Summit and had a really nice lunch in the cafe. The next day we visited the North Lakes Wildlife park (top cafe once again) and then took our dog up Skiddaw on a route kindly told to us by a local that leaves by the path off the drive and circles back round to the cottages. Wellies were a must which adds to the adventure. The weather was very cold but the cottage was toasty. Thank you for a relaxing break away.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is comfortable and maintained to a high standard. The location is the highlight with such amazing views of Skiddaw which looked so beautiful covered in snow and towering above the cottage. The cottage was ideal for four people, warm and cosy. We definitely recommend it to others!

Underskiddaw Cottage is a 20 minute drive from J40 on the M6. There is also a good bus service from Penrith mainline railway station to Keswick. There is a bus service between Millbeck and Keswick except Sunday.

Keswick is 2 miles south of Millbeck. The Lyzzick Hall Hotel (evening meals available) is a 10 minute walk. The Pheasant at Crosthwaite (good pub food) is a 5 minute drive or 25 minute walk.

Further Details:

There is a large Booths supermarket in Keswick and a wide range of pubs and restaurants including The Dog and Gun, an excellent real ale pub.
