Underskiddaw Cottage is part of a converted Lakeland mill situated at the foot of Skiddaw, just above the hamlet of Millbeck 2 miles north of Keswick. The cottage is beautifully appointed with full central heating, a multi-fuel stove in the lounge and lots of character including exposed stone, thick walls, sash windows, exposed beams and solid oak flooring. A proper rest!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay. The cottage was warm, comfortable and had everything you needed. The location is just wonderful - all you hear is the sound of the beck and the rush of the breeze through the nearby wood.

Keswick is close by, so we had a few trips to The Dog and Gun - it would be rude not to! But, best of all is the fact that there are some stunning walks right from the doorstep, so we didn’t have to use the car that much.

We will definitely return to Underskiddaw Cottage in the future. Quite honestly, we didn’t really want to leave...

We'll be back!

  • 5 of 5

We chose this cottage because of its fabulous reviews yet at the same time didn't really have high expectations. However it turns out the pictures don't do the place justice, it is far cosier in reality than it looks, and the basket of logs to make a fire in the stove were greatly appreciated to make it even more so.

We wanted to be close to Keswick so that we would have plenty to do with the children should it rain- swimming pool, cinema, indoor climbing walls and even an indoor caving system. The cottage is just minutes by car to the centre of town so it suited us in that regard. But what we loved most was the fabulous location of the cottage, being able to walk with the dog in the woods directly outside the cottage, finding waterfalls with the children- forget Swallows and Amazons, our children felt they had a proper Famous Five adventure going on. We all brought walking boots but wellingtons are absolute essentials for wading in the river at the waterfalls!

The visitors book reveals that Lynne and Chris have been letting out the cottage for holidays for over 10 years and is full of glowing reviews..

Space-wise the cottage was fine for our family of four plus a Labrador. Wifi connection was good as once the children were in bed we cosied up with an open fire and were able to set up the laptop with a VGA cable to watch Netflix through the TV. Responding to a previous review Lynne mentioned they purchased a new mattress for the double bed and we can attest that this is extremely comfortable, we both slept incredibly well. There are some games (Monopoly, uno etc) provided in the cottage which were appreciated.

Our only critism of the cottage is that considering that the living room does not receive a great deal of natural light (it's a listed building so fine that the windows can't be made any bigger) that the artificial light provided, whilst pleasant in the evenings to create a cosy feel, is rather insufficient for eating breakfast and lunch inside in the autumn months. Perhaps dimmer switches would enable the lighting to be turned up when required, or further floor standing lights be provided (there is one floor standing reading light but it did not work for us-probably needed a new bulb).

The kitchen was well equipped for our needs. We did forget to bring tea and coffee so were grateful some were there waiting for us -although only two teabags!

All-in-all it was a fabulous base for a holiday and we will definitely book again.

Perfect Place to Explore the Lake District

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a week at Under Skiddaw cottage in Millbeck and hope to return again in the future. It was perfect in every way. The cottage is very well appointed and the location is ideal for hikers and explorers. We could walk out the front door and be on Skiddaw in minutes. The little village of Millbeck is charming and all quite well away from the crowded hustle and bustle of Keswick and the rest of the Lake District villages. We had the benefit of being close to it all but away from the crowds. We met people in the village who were lovely and so enjoyed being able to go out for the day and come home to such a beautiful cottage. We hosted a friend in the second bedroom for two nights and had dinner guest on two other occasions and it worked really well. The cottage is small but perfect for up to four guests.

Nice mid terrace cottage but numerous issues made the stay disappointing

  • 3 of 5

We arrived to find the grill element was broken and awaiting repair.

A leak in hall which was coming through the ceiling from the toilet upstairs

A leak in the boiler.

Ellen got a plumber to fix the toilet leak the following day, replaced towels and provided a bottle of wine, which was appreciated.

Also found the bed to be uncomfortable, could feel the springs. Some basic tea and coffee makings would have been appreciated and maybe a pint glass? Also, when we were in the middle of the above issues I enquired whether we could move to another cottage if they were empty. Unfortunately, Ellen said she was unable to do so as all the cottages have separate owners. Maybe in cases such as this it would be a good idea to have an agreement between the owners to allow guests to be moved when there is an issue such as a leak. If another cottage is available.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review - I'm so sorry that there were some unforeseeable issues with your stay at the cottage. I'm glad to hear that the leak was fixed so promptly and the grill element was also replaced within a week of the problem but I'm sorry that the part hadn't arrived in time for your stay. We always leave tea etc including a jug of milk in the fridge when guests arrive - I know the first thing I usually do when I arrive is put the kettle on! Please accept my apologies if this hadn't been done for your stay. Thank you for telling us about the problem with the bed. As we're currently living some distance away, we haven't stayed at the cottage for a little while so we appreciate you letting us know - we have now ordered a new pocket-sprung Silentnight mattress.

Wonderful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 days at Underskiddaw cottage. It really felt like home away from home, there was everything you could possibly want during a short break. The cottage is very well maintained with comfortable furnishings. The location is excellent with easy access to Keswick and surrounding walks. We will definitely go back again. The perfect place for a break away from it all.
