Le Poirier is a renovated 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom, stone and colombage farm building set in three acres of grounds largely laid to lawn with many cider apple trees and old pear trees after which the property is named. It is around 1km walk into the village of Barenton which has a supermarket, post office, pharmacy, bank, bakers and bars. Further afield there is a bigger selection of shops in Mortain and the market towns of St Hilaire, Domfront and Sourdeval. The cottage has been beautifully renovated keeping all the character of the old beams and traditional fireplace. It has been furnished to a very high standard throughout making it a real home from home.

About the Owner

Looking for a future retirement project, we fell in love with this property on sight and bought it in 2007.

The holiday cottage is now fully renovated and though Graham still has to work part time both Graham and Anne now live full time at Le Poirier with our rescue greyhound, Hannah and so is available to welcome you.

We just love the relaxed pace of life in France and really enjoy the peaceful far ranging views of the normandy bocage and hope that you too will come to relax and unwind in this beautiful historic area.

A wonderful house

Le Poirier is a wonderful house for a relaxing holiday in a stunning position, the photographs do not do the property justice. Anne and Graham who were very helpful have furnished the house to a very high standard, it is very well presented, clean and has everything you require and most importantly everything works! Wonderful place for a relaxing holiday

We spent the most wonderful holiday at this beautiful cottage. Anne and Hannah make you feel so welcome, that you feel relaxed and at home from the moment you arrive. The gite is really well set up so you have everything you need for self catering in real comfort and probably the best bed you'll ever sleep on in a holiday let. The local area is really picturesque and quite quiet - lovely villages to explore, walks and markets to entertain - we loved Domfront. Further afield we visited Bayeux which was fascinating, as was Mont St Michel. We can't wait to go back and continue to explore this lovely part of France from this absolutely perfect base!

Wonderful! A great place to unwind!

We stayed here for a week in late July after making a last minute booking and had a most comfortable and relaxing week. The rural setting is tranquil with glorious views and just the sound of the birds and cows punctuating the silence. The cottage has been lovingly restored maintaining it's original character whilst having all mod cons and stylish furnishings, including very comfy beds! The outside space is also well equipped and provides an ideal spot to enjoy the sunsets.

The owner lives onsite and was attentive without being intrusive. We were greeted like friends and provided with some welcome groceries which was a lovely touch.

The variety of attractions in the locality and the facilities of the property make the cottage suitable for all ages either as a family or couples. The vaulted ceiling and king sized bed in the main bedroom also make this ideal for a romantic break.

This is probably the best holiday cottage we have stayed in at present and we would certainly recommend this wonderful cottage to others. We would love to return one day, maybe in cooler weather so we can try out the huge wood burner!

It is just a beautiful high quality property surrounded by stunning countryside. Everything is finished to a very high standard and our aim is to make you feel at home, with everything you need to make your holiday comfortable.

Activity and Interests

Nearest Ferry : Ouistreham, Caen at 150 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Bagnoles-de-l'Orne at 40 Kilometres Nearest Train : Flers at 40 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Mont St Michel Bay at 55 Kilometres Car: necessary


Mont St Michel is a 45 minute drive away. The D-Day beaches are around a 2 hours drive away. St Malo and Granville are approx 1 1/2 hours drive, and there are a number of quiet secluded beaches approx 1 hours drive away.


Nearest airport is Dinard - 1.5 hours drive but car hire would be essential.

Brittany ferries into Caen is 1.5 hours drive; into Cherbourg just under 2 hours. LD lines come into Le Havre approximately 2.5 hours away, and also Dieppe which is just over 3.5 hours. Alternatively the drive down from Calais is around 5 hours.


Barenton is just over a kilometre away (a 15 minute walk), with Mortain a ten minute drive. The larger town of St Hilaire is around 20 minutes drive and has a very large market every Wednesday. Sourdeval has a smaller but lively market every Tuesday and is around 15 minutes drive.

Further Details:

The local village has a small supermarket with an excellent butchery department selling locally produced meat. There is a good pharmacy and bank with ATM in the village, and an excellent boulangerie. The apple and pear museum is on the outskirts of the village presenting the history of cider making. This is the perfect location for exploring medeival history in Domfront, Dinan, Laval and Bayeaux for example. More modern history is in Mortain, the D-Day beaches, Caen and Arromanche. All these places are within easy reach of our holiday home. The more energetic are catered for by miles of walking and cycling routes as well as rock climbing and horse riding close by. For children there is the Bellefontaine amusement park, aligator bay and Champrepus zoo.

Booking Notes:
The prices quoted are in £ Sterling and are for a full week. The price includes bed linen and towels for up to 4 people. We take a 15% deposit to secure the booking with the balance 6 weeks before your holiday. Payment can be made by bank transfer using the faster payments system. We can offer advice on various ferry crossing options, please just ask for assistance.

Changeover Day:
Changeover is generally Saturday for weekly bookings but we can be flexible to your preferences depending on booking volumes. Arrival time is ideally after 4pm in peak times with departure no later than 10.00am but again ask if these times do not suit.

Notes on prices:
The gite can be available for shorter stays subject to bookings. Please contact us for further details. The prices are based on 4 people occupying the property. An additional £30 per week is chargeable for each additional person. An additional payment of £30 is required if you bring a dog (1 only) to reflect thee additional cleaning. A security deposit of £100 is payable on arrival.

15% deposit required on booking with balance, including deposit, payable by bank transfer 6 weeks prior to holiday dates.

Owner's Cancellation Policy

  • 50% refund for cancellations more than 7 days before check-in date.
  • 100% refund for cancellations more than 14 days before check-in date.

  • Notes on accommodation: Non smoking house. Heating is via the log burner in the living room and electric heaters in every room. Outside: The cottage is set in 3 acres of private grounds with parking to the front. The west facing patio at the rear of the property has far reaching views of the rolling farmland. There are many fruit trees around the house, and the patio is furnished with a table and chairs, parasol and armchairs. There is a Weber BBQ available for guests use. Utility Room: Upstairs cupboard housing washing machine, airer, steam iron and board. Outside rotary clothes line. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Bedlinen, towels and kitchen towels are provided for 4 people but please bring your own beach towels. Hairdryers are provided in both bedrooms. Linen for additional beds as detailed above will be provided at additional cost. The house is cleaned weekly. Other: Dining room with antique oak table seating 6. Sideboard holding large selection of glasses. CD radio and a selection of CDs. French doors to rear patio. Outside split level patio with table, chairs, parasol and Weber BBQ.
