Overview

About the property

Secluded villa with garden and pool in Loro Piceno near Macerata. Close to beautiful hill towns, Adriatic coast and mountains. Sleeps 6-7

If you want a peaceful holiday away from tourist crowds in the heart of traditional Italy, Casa Valentina is the place for you. Once a summer residence for monks dating back hundreds of years, the tastefully restored villa is situated in rolling countryside close to both sea and mountains in a region where the warmth and hospitality of the Italian people survives. The ancient town of Loro Piceno is home of vino cotto, a delicious dessert wine, and the area has many excellent but inexpensive restaurants. Our house is on three floors in more than an acre of land with a large garden and swimming pool surrounded by an extensive tiled area. The peace is only disturbed by the melodic chiming of Loro Piceno's church bells on the hillside opposite the villa. Beaches or the majestic Sibillini mountains are 40 minutes away. The extensive ruins of the ancient Roman city of Urbs Salvia are less than 10 minutes from the house and the area is full of hill towns as beautiful as those in Umbria and Tuscany, but less well known and developed. Art treasures wait to be discovered in little-known, ancient churches and festivals light up local hill towns during the summer. There are terracotta tiles throughout the spacious and airy house, a hand-made maple kitchen and three modern bathrooms plus a downstairs toilet. Four double/one single bedroom. One hour from Ancona airport. Also accessible from Bologna, Rome, Pisa and Pescara. Many picturesque hill towns are nearby including Macerata -- which hosts a renowned summer opera festival -- Tolentino and Ascoli Piceno, the jewel of the Marche region.

About Barry Moody

I am a journalist and have worked all over the world as an international correspondent, including several assignments in Italy. We now split our time between the house in Loro Piceno and London. I am a lifelong Italophile and speak fluent Italian. We love the warm and welcoming character of the Marche people who have maintained the traditional Italian virtues that have been lost in more commercialised areas of the country.

Barry Moody purchased this villa in 2011

Why Barry Moody chose Loro Piceno

This is a marvellously unspoilt region of Italy which has escaped the over-development of Tuscany and Umbria. Our house is close to both sea and mountains in beautiful, tranquil countryside. The local people are extremely hospitable, generous and friendly. The area is full of little known hill towns with secret art treasures hidden in their churches. Le Marche is the region where Italy's old values survive.

What makes this villa unique

The house is tranquil and in its own land, with lovely views but with no noise except the birds. It is close to excellent restaurants and beautiful towns.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This property has pretty much everything one could wish for on a holiday. Inside it has been tastefully modernised, is very comfortable and had ample space for us, the seven adults and a baby who stayed there, while outside there was a spacious patio area, surrounded by lawns and a flower border, ideal for an evening barbecue, and beyond that a lovely pool. All with a panoramic view over the valley to the hillside beyond and the village of Loro Piceno perched on the hilltop in the distance. There is also plenty to see and places of interest to visit in the surrounding area. If I had a holiday place in Italy it would be something very like this.

Spacious villa in beautiful tranquil location

  • 5 of 5

The villa was spacious, even with eight people in our group, and very well equipped, clean and well maintained. Large kitchen and lounge area and all bedrooms are a very good size and comfortable. Villa is within easy reach (by car) of several small towns and three or four very good restaurants and located at the bottom of a "white road" so no passing traffic or nearby neighbours.

Large supermarket (Superconti) about 20 minutes away in Corridonia but smaller supermarkets closer in Urbisaglia and Loro Piceno. We found a fantastic pizzeria in Macerata - La Taverna - recommended !!

Fantastic 2 weeks holiday in beautiful Le Marche

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 2 weeks in Casa Valentina this summer 2016 with our 3 children (all in their 20ties) and their partners (7 people). This place was fully addressing our expectations in terms of location, space, comfort, style and available relaxation possibilities. Right in the middle of the wonderful landscape of Le Marche (unknown to us before our stay) with old towns such as San Ginesio, Loro Piceno, Recanati, Fermo … easily reachable (even during summer not really overwhelmed by tourists - the historic centers are beautifully lit at night – perfect atmosphere for a quiet outside diner). Only 1 hour driving to the Adriatic coast (nice beach at Saint Elpidio) and to the Monte Sibilini national park (exciting hiking trails – Gola dell’Infernaccio is fantastic !). In nearby Macerata, the open air Sferisterio is a must for opera lovers. Less then 2 hours drive to Ancona where we especially enjoyed the Monte Conero area (Sirolo) (exciting views !). The supermarkets in Tolentino offer a wide choice of fresh food and drinks: meat, fish and local wines (Rosso Conero (Montepulciano+Sangiovese) and the white Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi are our favourites). Casa Valentina is a stylishly renovated old house with a big 2 level backyard and swimming pool having fantastic view on the hills and the small town of Loro Piceno. The 6 archs in the back wall of the house and the porch on the ground level are a very nice decor for family meals on the big terrace any time of the day (barbecue is available !). The 3 bedrooms (and 2 bathrooms) on the first floor are very comfortable, spacious and nicely decorated with easy access via a wide passage (also suitable to relax with nice view on the garden through the 3 large windows). There is also a practical, large kitchen and a cosy living room with library (too many interesting books for a 2 weeks stay only !!). The house is more than big enough to provide enough comfort and privacy for 3 couples and 1 single. Some attention points: the house lies down at the end of a 500 meter long gravel road which is a bit scary the first time you drive it because some parts are quite steep. This is only a first impression however – all of us were getting used to it very quickly and luckily (at least in summer) there is a water pipe available at the back of the house – otherwise it would have been hard to recognize our own car after a few days;-). Some basic knowledge of the Italian language is recommended here (this is not Tuscany !)

Comfortable house in lovely countryside

  • 4 of 5

The house has been lovingly converted and is very well-equipped. The view from the house and pool is exceptional. The area is appealing with few tourists and lots of interesting hill-top towns.

Our only warning is to take care your car has a decent-sized engine as when we tried with a tiny car it struggled to get up the hill.

The real Italy

  • 4 of 5

If you're looking for complete tranquillity, a stunning location and a taste of rural Italian life away from the main tourist trail then this is the place for you. The villa is extremely comfortable, sympathetically restored, with good accommodation and a lovely pool. Arrival is dramatic down a steep stony track but it's well worth the ride! A car is a must and the short journey to delightful local towns such as Loro Piceno, Tolentino and Urbisaglia is a treat in itself. A little further afield is the jewel of Ascoli Piceno. On top of that there are some wonderful local restaurants, which goes without saying in Italy! Casa Valentina gives you the chance to experience the real Italy. We'll be back!!
