About the property

The Old Telephone Exchange at Mamhead looks out over Tuscan like scenery to the coast at Exmouth and is situated in a quiet country lane with regular sightings of deer, birds and other wildlife. There is no street lighting or noise of any kind. The location is ideal for walkers and cyclists, or anyone wishing to step off the world for a while, or as a base to explore a beautiful part of Devon. There is a coarse fishing lake five minutes walk down the lane.

This tiny, yet perfectly formed, hideaway offers peace, quiet and tranquility ‘away from it all’, yet lies within a few minutes’ drive of the motorway and the coast. There are shops, pubs and eating places three miles away in the village of Starcross., which also has bus and train links to Exeter and beyond, plus a ferry across to Exmouth.

The cottage, which was featured in the BBC Homes Under the Hammer programme, has a full kitchen, shower room, comfortable living area (with wood burner stove), a mezzanine sleep shelf with a double bed and amazing views through to the coast. The sleep shelf has been added this year to give extra space and comfort to visitors plus additional sleeping capacity. (Can now sleep up to six people)

On the ground floor there are two bed settees which will convert to double beds, which can be prepared for client's arrival if required. The ground floor accommodation is suitable for disabled people, and is 'dog friendly' (no charge for dogs), with parking next to the cottage and a shallow ramp down to the front door. There is a TV/DVD and radio, wood-burner (logs provided), plus additional electric heaters and electric blankets on the single beds. A 'welcome pack' with basic essentials is provided on arrival. Outside, there is a BBQ space and secluded seating area.

Great stay for a sunny weekend mostly spent on the beach

Although small the Old Telephone exchange had everything we needed and is very well positioned for exploring the countryside and coast near Exeter. We stayed on a very sunny weekend and it was great to sit outside with views over the fields and woods to the coast.

Lovely property

Lovely property with beautiful views out to the coast and rolling hills. Make sure you bring coins with you because there is an electricity meter. Overall a very peaceful stopover in a gorgeous location.

Lovely Secluded Hideaway

The cottage was just as described with plenty of room for us and our dogs. Superb views across open fields to the south Devon coast. Bed was very comfortable with patio doors opening out to the garden. Well equipped kitchen with all we needed for our stay. Would certainly recommend and would book again. The only comment would be that the television signal was not very strong and the picture kept freezing - a minor point but when you are trying to get the weather forecast to plan days out it was difficult. Lovely thought with the welcome pack and biscuits for the dogs. Really enjoyed our stay.

Great location with excellent views

A lovely location tucked away in the country with views down to the Exe estuary. The cottage itself was a little disappointing. The principal bed was a sofa bed and not very comfortable, while the bed in the mezzanine was no good for us given the difficulties of access. The cottage was also a little dirty.

Owner's Response: In my tiny telephone exchange I have a high quality orthopedic mattress for comfort of mature guests. It is in a wooden frame. It is well supported and fits within a small space. The "mezzanine" shelf is for children, or the young at heart! to enjoy. 2 mature adults and pets booked the space. A professional cleaner visits weekly. Also, I go on the day of arrival to make double sure all is in place plus a welcome pack. My property was well covered in dog hair after these guests departed, which necessitated a BIG clean. I am so sorry Mr Bird did not enjoy his stay. It is what it is- a tiny, well formed cottage in a beautiful location. Despite the beautiful weather it saddens me that it was not agreeable for all on a two day break.

Little Gem

I recently stayed in this fabulous little cottage. The Old Telephone Exchange. It's compact but has all the facilities you need. Best part for us was the tranquil setting. Nearest cottage was about 200 meters away. Quiet. And very relaxing. Myself my partner and most of all my german shepherd "Louis" enjoyed every minute

We took in the coastal resorts as far as Brixham. All within easy driving distance. Great local walks in the Forrest only 5 mins in the car. All in all the most relaxed we have been in ages

I will definitely go again.

From Mar 2017 there will be two futon beds on the ground floor and a double mattress on a mezzanine shelf with spectacular views across farmland and woods to the sea.

The wood burner gives out amazing heat (wood supplied). There are also electric heaters for instant heat.

There is a full kitchen, a wet room, TV with DVD player, a parking area and a bbq with outside seating.

Waist high fencing all round ensures that the outside space is safe for children and animals.

There are no immediate neighbours except deer, hares, buzzards and other wildlife.

No street lighting and very little local traffic. Good mobile phone signal.

The Old Telephone Exchange is close to beaches, restaurants and dining. You’ll love my place because of the cosiness, isolation, peace, views and location. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travellers, families (with kids), and furry friends (pets - no extra charge).

The OTE is tiny. It is ideally suited to two adult guests, but can accommodate up to six from Mar 17. Prices are for 2 guests. Extra guests will be charged £12/night/pp.

My guests enjoy complete privacy but know that I am available for any problems.

You will need a car to get to and from the cottage. There is a mainline train station, buses up and down the coast and a ferry to Exmouth (which will accept dogs and bicycles) all three miles away at Starcross and you can leave your car there FREE if you wish to venture farther afield by public transport.

There are suggestions for places to visit and things to do at the OTE.

There is great walking and excellent mountain bike trails in and around the area.

Supermarkets, restaurants, fish and chip shop, pub and local shops are 3 miles away.
