About the property

The Old School House in Pujols, Near Saint Emilion, Dordogne, Gironde, France - Enjoy A Gite With A Real Past And Bundles Of Character. New Pool. Between Bordeaux & Bergerac.

Welcome to this lovely, relaxed Gite in its very special setting. Here you have commanding views down over the sweeping vineyards below, and across the Aquitaine plain towards St Emilion.

Awaken to the sun and idle up the lane to the village deli for bread (4 mins). Enjoy your croissant by the pool and plan lunch at the charming bistro in the village square.

Tonight there is a local rose for aperitif on the lower terrace and then a barbecue on the lawn as everyone relaxes into the holiday . . . . and then becomes breathless as the incredible sunset reveals from the special vantage point.

Forget your watch, and let the chime of the Abbey set the pace.

And beyond today? Wonderful walks, cycling (4 bikes are yours to use) and exploration from this comfortable base. The Dordogne river is just 5km away and the area is rich in wine chateau (endless tastings!), idyllic villages, historic towns and many local activities (eg caves, canoeing, ballooning, golf).

The "Anciennes Ecole" is packed with traditional French character, yet has new and modern amenities (eg 2 ensuites added new in 2016, refurbished bedrooms, TV, DVD, WiFi etc). It's also very private, being gated and with a walled courtyard. A huge and rambling garden stretches off down the hillside.

About Laurence Young

We live on the West Coast of Scotland among the mountains and beside the loch. It's a sensational location - but sometimes we find it a little wet and cold. The climate, culture and style of the south of France is compelling! As a family of 7 (youngest is 14 and oldest is 28), our French home needed to fulfill a wide range of criteria, and The Old School House hit the spot. - it's large and spacious, and seems to always expand to take more family and friends. - there is lots to explore, to do and to see right on the doorstep. jogging and cycling is fantastic - there is night life in towns, not too far away - the property has two old classrooms, yet to be refurbished (another project in the wings)!

Laurence Young purchased this villa in 2011

Why Laurence Young chose Pujols

Having spent some time holidaying in different locations around the South of France, we decided we would like a base of our own. The Gironde was our instinctive target: we love the rolling countryside and the beauty of the vineyards and the villages. It has a remote, unspoilt charm and is "real" - the whole area is deeply agricultural and the land is worked. The wide range of majestic wines are an attraction (there are remarkable bargains to be had), plus the fabulous local ingredients and good food all around. Importantly, it's also so easy to get to. A quick drive from Bordeaux airport with so many low-cost flights, and the option of Bergerac, too. Plus, public transport to the door if we want it. Simply a wonderful location!

What makes this villa unique

This is a very special location, and the pictures show how we are endlessly mesmerised by the views, the panoramas from the windows and the wonders created by this elevated position. It's also a great pleasure being in a home with age and character; there are many features of the Ancienne Ecole that remain and this building clearly played an important part in the village during the 1900's. Whilst the sensation is that the house sits amongst the vineyards, the village is just on the doorstep and being able to walk to the bakery is a fundamental part of each day. Then there is something magical about having the old Abbey next door, and waking to the gentle chimes of ancient bells . . . .

Notes on accommodation: This characterful home is ideal for a couple wishing space and a romantic get-away, or for a large family seeking good comfort in a relaxed, homely style. It seems like a tardis - the home is cosy for 2, yet grows to accommodate many! We are a family of 6, and often have other families to stay, too. There's so much space! Also, the property has a lovely blend of the old (it's a converted School House) with the new (modern, new equipment everywhere), but most special of all is the location. With a mouth-dropping hill-top position, many of the rooms have awesome views out over vineyards and across the Dordogne plain. Off to one side is the beautiful old abbey, giving the place a special, timeless atmosphere. The interior design is not chic and sophisticated, but rather seeks to be comfortable, french and homely. We've worked to keep Ikea furniture to a minimum (although tempted here and there!) and have found pieces in local antique shops, brocantes and local markets. Outside: Private pool, 8m*4m, located in a picturesque courtyard just outside the kitchen (also can be accessed from the lane outside via double, electric gates) with a large, spacious new terrace. The pool terrace gives views out to the nearby ancient abbey and on beyond, to the Dordogne plains way below; yet due to the raised elevation, it is not overlooked. There's a large, covered cloister along one side of the pool and this makes for superb dining area. Garden furniture (luxurious chairs, loungers etc), BBQ. Stone stairs lead off the courtyard down to the main garden (also accessed by stairs within the gite). Front garden with roses and shrubs - catches the morning sun! The main garden has an older patio adjoining the house (with table and chairs - this is where lots of the relaxing, eating and wine-tasting goes on!), then drops gently away down the hillside, with a lawn and fruit trees leading into a more secluded wooded area where the children have their adventures. Utility Room: Across the courtyard is the Old School girls toilet - now converted to hold a washing machine and drying machine! Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: White towels and linen (mostly Egyptian cotton) included. Bring your own pool towels. Mid-holiday cleaning on request. Other: There's a covered cloister in the courtyard beside the pool. This is a large, shady area with table, chairs & lounge seating. An old classroom is in it's original state - this provides a great space for storage of bikes, garden chairs, firewood etc.

True French character, great for larger groups and families, excellent pool

  • 5 of 5

We've just returned from a stay here in Pujols, and really enjoyed this property. It has plenty of space for up to 10 people - would be ideal for a couple of families holidaying together. There were 6 of us and we wanted 4 bedrooms and there was ample space here. Parking was very easy outside the property (car absolutely essential), and easy to access with very good communication from the owner. It had everything we needed for our stay, beds were clean and comfortable, good sized kitchen. Yes, it is next to the Abbey, which means that you have stunning views but also that you are woken at 7am with the ringing of the bells (didn't bother us, but you do need to be aware that they ring every hour up to about 10pm). The pool was excellent, a good size - a bit cold for me, but the kids were hardy and used it every day, even though the May weather was very changeable and we had some impressive thunderstorms. The village is very, very quiet- has a good shop and local restaurant but only open during the day mon-fri. Pujols is a good base for exploring the region, but you do need to get out and about if the weather is dodgy. We explored St Emilion, Bordeaux, Bergerac, Eymet and visited a couple of Chateau's (Chateau de Bridoire was a favourite of the kids). All we would have liked would have been more sunshine - but hey, you can't guarantee that in May.

Beautiful house in peaceful & stunning location

  • 5 of 5

This is a one of a kind property! A beautiful old schoolhouse full of charm and character with simply stunning views. We actually couldn't believe how spectacular the sunsets were! The house was extremely comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. The two rooms off the pool that were recently refurbished were really lovely with great bathrooms/showers. There was nothing nicer than opening the wooden shutters in the morning and looking down over the vineyards. Followed by a stroll up to the local shop where Didier had taken our order for fresh croissants for our stay. We spent many happy days by the pool and evenings on the terrace. Laurence was extremely helpful providing information in advance and during our stay. We had lunch twice at Chez Sylvie in the village which was delicious (go for the menu du jour) La Mounan in Castillion was a great spot for dinner. We also enjoyed a fabulous long lunch in La Poudette on our last day where the owners couldn't have been more accommodating. We were spoiled for choice in terms of Chateaux nearby and of course St Emillion. Highlights for the kids (aside from the fabulous pool) were kayaking on the Dordogne from Pessac. They also loved doing the tour of the underground monolithic church in St Emillion. And they enjoyed swimming (and trampolining) at Lac de la Cadie for a change of scenery. There is a brilliant supermarket just 15 minutes away in Castillion. And of course fabulous markets. We went to a night market in Blassimon on the recommendation of Jan the caretaker (thank you!) which was amazing fun. I loved that it was so quiet and peaceful (you get used to the bells!) and you could be as active or not as you choose. If you are looking for an authentic, beautiful and relaxing holiday then this is the place for you.

A great house with stunning views, heaven!

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a relaxing base for a familly wedding, we got that and so much more!

The house easilly accomodated the 9 of us and while the description could not be faulted, we also benefitted from the 2 brand new bathrooms which are a great addition.

Arranging it all with Laurence was a breeze, he even accomodated us wanting to extend our stay by an extra day. Bread, cheese and a chilled bottle of wine were a lovely welcoming touch and much appreciated.

Pujols is a lovely little village with some stunning views. The bells from the church next door provide the wake up call (7am), time for a short walk up the hill to pick up bread and croissants. The bells chime throughout the day ( no need for a watch!) but you quickly get used to them and they add to the charm. Getting everyone going before the heat of the day is also no bad thing!

Lunch at Chez Sylvie is a must (so good we did it 3 times!), with a short stroll back down the hill and an afternoon next to the pool, the perfect lazy day!

You need a car to explore the area but the roads are quiet and the supermarket only 10 minutes away.

We got to see some of the area as part of the wedding celebrations, wine tasting in St Emillion and caneoing on the Dordogne, all just a short drive away.

It is a lovely area and we want to come back and explore more. The Old School House is a perfect base and we would certainly stay there again.

Absolutely lovely

  • 5 of 5

we stayed here for a week in August and it was a lovely experience for all of us - peaceful and relaxing. The house and courtyard have been beautifully restored and are tasteful and comfortable spaces to spend time in. We were reluctant to move from there and when we did we didn't venture too far but highly recommend Chez Sylvie in the village for lunch and the local lake for a change of scene and a swim. Down the hill is La Poudette where we had two of the most stunning meals, particularly lunch in the garden - the hostess, Sophie (I think), is friendly and helpful and the food is superb. Back to the house: Laurence is so easy to deal with and patient with all enquiries. Some guests have mentioned the abbey bells and we would like it on record that they are a wonderful, mellow and atmospheric aural backdrop to a very special place. It wouldn't be the same without the bells!! Thank you Laurence, we hope to return soon.

Enjoyable location & villa for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

5 adults, 1 child & 2 Bulldogs had a very enjoyable stay at The Old School House. The pool was chilly as it was late September but still used most days. The villa had everything we needed. Laurence was very helpful & full of information about the area. The views from the windows were really good & great sunsets. The village was very pleasant as were all the local people. Plenty to see & do in the area. Excellent & relaxing holiday.

Car: recommended

The property is 5 minutes drive from a large fresh water lake with a beach, swimming and bar/restaurant. Arcachon (1.5 hours by car) with it's long sweeping beaches and great surfing is located on the Atlantic coast. See "Dune de Pyla" – Europe’s highest sand dune, visit the impressive lighthouse, enjoy Aquadome, take boat & narrow gauge railway trips, visit bird sanctuary. Or just relax in one of the many, fine seafood restaurants.

Strategically located between Bordeaux Airport (55 minutes) and Bergerac Airport (30 minutes), with many low-cost and traditional airlines. TGV to Libourne. Local bus service from Libourne to Pujols. Car hire a good idea (we do) - but not essential.

Pujols is centred in an area rich with historic small towns, picturesque villages and beautiful chateau. Castillon la Bataille is 7 minutes by car (really good E Leclerc and Monday market), with Libourne (20 minutes) having all major retailers. Beautiful Saint Foy Le Grand is also on the Gironde river, 15 minutes in the other direction. It's renowned for the quaint streets, old houses and traditional market every Saturday. Our favourite is the hilltop village of Gensac, just 10 minutes away.

Further Details:

Walks and cycle tracks radiate across vineyards in all directions and you don't need to go far to make some lovely new discovery. Typical relaxing holidays might include: a visit to Chez Sylvie, a wonderful, informal restaurant/cafe on Pujols Square (12E for a 4 course lunch, with wine!).

We're blessed to have La Poudette restaurant just a wee walk away down the hill. Michelin starred, this relaxed & informal rural retreat attracts visitors from miles around (and we are only minutes away!). For the awesome food, it's very well priced.

Favourite of all is La Table Rouge, 4 miles away and beside the lazy Dordogne river: a casual atmosphere the children LOVE, with great food, too (and they actually look after our vegetarian son!). Not cheap, but a must-visit.

12 minute drive to the memorable caves of Rauzan (Callum, 14 "the best place I've ever visited"). Exploration of Saint Emilion with it's narrow winding streets, ancient cathedral and many nooks and crannies. Cycle out to one of the many local chateau, for a wine tasting. Dinner on the banks of the Gironde, at La Table Rouge (a small local restaurant that is the family favourite). Special meal at La Poudette, one of the most respected restaurants in Aquitaine (and just 10 mins walk away). Enjoy an extra-ordinary "spectacle" - the dramatic son et lumiere recreation of the last battle of the Hundred Years War. This stunning outdoor performance takes place on set nights in July and August each year and is unmissable. On a practical front, Pujols has a bank and then Castillon (7 mins by car) has everything else one might need (eg 3 supermarkets, 2 DIY warehouses, many bakers etc).
