Spacious Villa Near Carcassonne With Large Gardens, Private Pool, Fabulous Views

Updated: 17-Oct-2016
Villa at La Peyre Blanque, near Carcassonne, Aude, France - Set In A Peaceful Rural Location Yet Only 30 Minutes From Carcassonne

Villa Toto is set in a tiny hameau, there are only five other houses and the road doesn't lead anywhere, so it's rare to see a passing car - and the drivers always wave! It has five double bedrooms, three bathrooms, a large L-shaped lounge and a fully equipped kitchen. There is room for ten to dine in comfort both inside and out, and the terraced gardens lead down to the large fenced pool. There are plenty of loungers and chairs, and the west garden is shady in the afternoons if you need to stay cool. The well-maintained gardens extend to almost an acre, and are planted with lawns, herbs and trees. There is a rose garden next to the pergola which bursts with colour and fragrance in the summer months. To keep everything looking its best all the gardens are automatically watered with recycled rainwater every night. Although rural in location, Villa Toto is just a ten minute drive to everyday shopping and is half an hour from Carcassonne. A twenty minute drive takes you to either Limoux or Mirepoix and the property is located in the fascinating Razès area of the Aude. The views from the garden are spectacular - to the south the Pyrenees, and to the north lie the Black mountains. The Mediterranean beaches are under an hour's drive to the east and the Pyrenees about the same to the south. If you search for Villa Toto on the web you'll find our own website with more detail and links to local activities and places of interest.

About the Owner

When we're not in France relaxing at our lovely villa, we live and work in north Buckinghamshire with, from time to time, an assorted collection of children and stepchildren and an abbyssinian cat - Morag - whose shape bears a passing resemblance to a butternut squash.

We loved this luxury villa set in the tranquility of the French countryside .It nestles in a remote hamlet of only a few other buildings and provides a perfect escape with magnificent views for miles around. The pool and gardens are great. The villa is well maintained by the owners friend who lives nearby and is easily contactable.

The only slight downside is that local shops are a fifteen minute drive away but that's a price worth paying. There are delightful towns nearby. We visited local lakes for swimming and water sports.

From the moment you open the front door until the moment you leave you feel the relaxing welcome that is Villa Toto!

Amazing yummy food and drink pack waiting.

Toiletry pack for all the grown ups.

Excellent Villa, great facilities.

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 10 (2 families with kids ranging from 7 to 16). The Villa was excellent with great facilities and in a really beautiful part of France. The area is not too touristy so you can hide away or head off and explore many of the great local sites. The owners provide a good level of information about local area to get you orientated and a bunch of helpful guide books. The pool is great with kids. The house was clean and tidy, furnished well but not cluttered. There was seating for 10 in the dining area inside which was a major point for us when looking for a villa. Lots of places can sleep ten but very few providing seating for ten so you can eat together.....and when in France surrounded but such great food, enjoying sitting down together was really important. The description of the villa is accurate and small things like having some cheese, bread, lunch meats and fruit available when we arrived was very thoughtful and took the stress out of having to head out and find somewhere after arriving late. Great Holiday and if back in this area would definitely book it again.

Owner's Response: Having rented holiday homes ourselves for a number of years, and encountering tight, cluttered spaces, we know how important it is for everyone to have room to relax, eat together - and be able to find a quiet corner to read a book if they want to. Villa Toto has gardens on all sides, so there is always the choice of sun or shade, and being with everyone else, or finding peaceful solitude with a glass of something lovely. We're so glad our guests agree.

A truly amazing get away!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful location, far from the madding crowd, a complete rest even with two children in tow! Easy to find, immaculate property with everything covered with some lovely touches. Great for large parties of people or just a small family. The house was well laid out and the grounds were beautiful. Swimming pool was a total hit with all and the children were in it every day. The views were stunning, with the mountains in the distance and French countryside in the foreground. Plenty of space for several cars, large eating area outside with b-b-q, games to play and areas within the house you could just chill out in. A pleasure to go to and would happily go back again which is not normally what we do but could easily go back for another week of relaxing, fun and the odd bottle of local wine here and there! Well done!

a corner of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Villa Toto is a lovely house, where we really felt at home. Very comfortable, lots of privacy and with a super garden. The outside space is even better than as seen on the website. Good sized swimmingpool for real swimming. Amazing views and so quiet, yet not isolated. The town of Mirepoix is only 20 min. drive and well worth a visit, with nice shops, lots of eating/drinking places and a very good weekly market. The rental was easily arranged by email. Thank you Martyn and Carolyn, we are already planning a return!

Owner's Response: Geertje Thank you so much for your lovely review - that's a great reward for us and our local team. We're so pleased that you enjoyed the villa, its gardens and the surrounding area as much as we do. As you discovered, the Aude has magnificent weather in September and towns like Mirepoix, Limoux and Carcassonne still buzz with local events and activities.

From the Owner

Having visited Carcassonne for the first time some ten years ago and fallen hopelessly in love with it, when the opportunity arrived to buy a house in France it just had to be in this wonderful area of the Aude. While Carcassonne and its magical medieval castle is an easy half hours drive away, Villa Toto itself is in a tiny hameau in an area of unspoilt peace and tranquility with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. The house needed total renovation, and we have had a happy time turning it into the perfect holiday home. It is beautiful throughout the seasons - surrounded by soft greens of the vines in the spring, fabulous fields of yellow sunflowers in the summer, rich browns and oranges of the vineyards in the autumn and spectacular snow-covered mountains in winter.

Nearest Airport : Carcassonne at 18 Miles Nearest Barpub : Le Vieux Chene, Maserolles at 3 Miles Nearest Ferry : Bilboa (Spain) at 350 Miles Nearest Golf : Carcassonne at 18 Miles Nearest Train : Bram at 13 Miles Nearest Motorway : Autouroute de Deux Mers - D 61 at 13 Miles Nearest Restaurant : Maserolles at 3 Miles Nearest Ski : Formigueres at 30 Kilometres Nearest Beach : Carcassonne Plage at 18 Miles Car: necessary

It's about an hour's drive to the blue flag Mediterranean beaches of Narbonne Plage, Gruissan-chalets plage and St. Pierre de Mer. Our favourite, Tamarissiere, is a little further on, not far from the picturesque old port of Marseillan - home to Noilly Prat. Closer to home, just outside Carcassonne to the east lies Lac du Cavayere. Beautifully landscaped with crystal clear water and pretty pebbled beaches, this lake provides safe freshwater swimming, canoeing and other water sports.

A number of budget airlines fly to Carcassonne (30 minute drive); Beziers (1 hour's drive) and Toulouse (90 minutes drive). All these airports have car hire facilities.

If you are driving down the autoroutes you'll find they are usually easy motoring as they are far less busy than motorways in the UK. Carcassone is 9 - 10 hours from the French channel ports. Villa Toto is 20 minutes from the Bram junction on the A61.

Belvèze du Razès, with its shops, bar, bank, chemist, boulangerie and summer restaurant is 8 kilometres away, while the larger towns of Limoux and Mirepoix with their colourful markets and wide selection of restaurants, bars and shops are just a little further away. Carcassonne itself with its stunning medieval castle - a world heritage site - its cosmopolitan shops and restaurants and colourful squares is an easy 27 kilometres away.

Further Details:

The Aude region in the Languedoc is one of the most unspoilt regions in France. Set amidst vineyards and fields of sunflowers, the tiny Hameau of Peyre Blanque is in the centre of the Razès - a wonderful area with many villages built in the medieval circulade design.

The winemaking estate of Domaine Gayda is close by at Brugairolles and is worth a visit with its wonderful restaurant (offering an affordable menu at lunchtime), its wine-tasting courses and its breathtaking view of the Pyrenees.

Mirepoix is a 15th century medieval bastide town with a wonderful central square, Place des Couverts. It is surrounded by fabulous timber-framed medieval houses which form broad covered walkways sheltering the many shops, restaurants and bars.

Limoux, famed for its sparkling blanquette wine, straddles the river Aude. Its wide central square, Place de la Republique, buzzes with activity, especially during the markets which are held on Fridays, and, during July and August, on Tuesday evenings.

Carcassone is the largest town in the area and boasts many attractions with bars and restaurants to suit every pocket and taste. Famed for its spectacular medieval walled city (complete with jousting knights in the summer) Carcassonne also has a great deal more to offer the visitor. The music festival in July attracts world class performers, and La Bastide festival provides free concerts and a breathtaking firework display on Bastille day. The Canal du Midi runs through Carcassonne and is a relaxing way of exploring the region. Boats can be hired in Carcassonne by the hour, or for a day or longer, and the towpath provides easy walking or cycling.

The history of the area is defined by association with the Cathar movement, the legacy of which can be found in the wealth of castles scattered across the countryside. Although 'La Cité' in Carcassone is the best preserved, Montsegur, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Puilaurens are also spectacular Cathar castles worth a visit.

From the Owner

As the property has only just finished being renovated, everything is brand new and has been designed for the sole purpose of creating an idyllic place to relax. A few steps from the kitchen/dining room take you to the table under the pergola where honeysuckle and trumpet vines provide you with shade. There you can sit with a glass of the local wine and gaze out over the pool and beyond to the rolling hills of the beautiful countryside and gently think about what you might want to do - or not do - tomorrow. Villa Toto is so easy to get to as it's only 30 minutes from Carcassonne airport and the car hire deals are excellent, even in the summer. The Mediterranean sea is about an hour away, but there are fabulous sandy beaches at inland lakes just a few miles away.

  • Notes on accommodation: Tiled floors throughout the property keep the villa cool. There are shutters on all the windows, and Parisienne tilting shutters on the south facing bedrooms keep these rooms cool whilst allowing in light and air. The lightwell above the stairs with its remotely controlled Velux window and blind floods the stairwell and landing with natural light. The house is set in large and well maintained gardens, terraced down to the pool on the south side, whilst several mature trees (including a very productive cherry) provide shade in the west garden. An extensive gravel area provides parking space and also forms a boule court - boules provided! There is WiFi throughout the property, iPod player and radio in the kitchen, books and games for all ages in the lounge - including French Monopoly! Both the lounge and dining room have woodburning stoves for winter evenings and the new double glazed windows help keep the house cool in summer and warm in the winter. This is a non smoking property. Outside: French doors lead you from the dining room to the terrace where a table and ten cushioned chairs are shaded by the pergola. There is a barbecue, and a variety of herbs are to be found growing close by. To the side of the pergola, there is a rose garden and, after dark, the pergola is illuminated with soft lighting. The terrace overlooks the Roman-ended 10x4m private swimming pool which, to keep the little people safe, is surrounded by a security fence. The pool has a fully automatic system which uses the latest UV treatment, so there are no sore eyes or chemical smells. The pool is regularly checked to make sure that all is working properly. There is a large gravel area for parking part of which also serves as a Boules court - and we've provided the boules for you. The gardens are planted with lawns, shrubs and trees, and an automatic watering system using collected rainwater keeps everything looking its best for you. There's a full size croquet set if you fancy some competitive fun. Utility Room: Ironing board, iron, washing machine. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bedlinen and duvets are provided, as are all towels - including pool towels and tea towels. The villa is cleaned and linen changed at all changeovers - and additional cleaning and linen can be arranged if required at extra cost. Other: The bright and airy dining room is on a split level down from the kitchen, with french doors leading out to the terraces and pool. Under the pergola there is a large table and ten comfortable chairs. A wood burning stove keeps the room warm in winter.
