About the property

Country Cottage in Balbeg, Glenurquhart, Nr. Loch Ness, Scotland - Secluded Location on Top of the Hill, Ideal for Nessie Watching, Touring the Highlands, Hill Walking

The Manor House is the original farmhouse of the country estate at Balbeg, near Loch Ness and Drumnadrochit, Urquhart castle and Nessie are close by. The house was built in 1888 and was fully renovated in late 2011 adding a new kitchen extension and conservatory, it sleeps 4-5 in 2 bedrooms, has 2 bathrooms/toilets and a new kitchen and conservatory. The Manor House sits on top of the hill in picturesque Glenurquhart in the small village of Balbeg. The house has 180 degree views of Glenurquhart overlooking loch Meklie and up to the mountains of the West coast up to 40 miles away. The house is surrounded by a working hill farm and backs onto moorland. This is a beautiful and secluded location for anyone looking for a quiet holiday or a central location to tour the highlands. The Isle of Skye and the famous village of Plockton can be toured within a day returning to Glenurquhart in the evening. Inverness, is 20 minutes away. Castle Stuart golf course is a mere 25 miles away.

About Jim McGregor

I am Jim McGregor a native of Glenurquhart and Balnain.

Why Jim McGregor chose Scottish Highlands & Islands

I bought the property in 1985 from an old school friend with the intention of renovating and living in the house. However my work kept me from renovating it until last year.

What makes this cottage unique

The location of the house is one of its strong points, it is on the top of the hill and has some of the best views in Glenurquhart. It is close to Loch Ness and Glen Affric and ideally situated for touring the highlands.

Great central location with a view

  • 5 of 5

The manor house in Balbeg is a great location for touring the highlands. The rental was very clean and comfortable. The manager was extremely helpful but with a few questions that arose. I would highly recommend the property for anyone that wants a good location to see the highlands. The view of the Glen and Munro's was great. I drink my morning coffee and watch the sunrise. The weather was perfect all ten days. We loved the places we saw. Great rental, thanks again Jim.

Lovely sized property in fantastic surroundings

  • 4 of 5

It was difficult to located the property as it didn't have a name post (which it does now). Very spacious living area and good-sized bathrooms. Second bedroom could have more storage as there was plenty of room. It is a good place to stay to travel to many places of interest including Glen Affric, Inverness, Fort George, Cairngorms and even John' O Groats! We had good weather which made the holiday even better. Nice place to relax and get away from it all and watch the wildlife. Good local shops in Drumnadrochit and very interesting Loch Ness visitor Centre. A very enjoyable holiday.

Séjour à la campagne

  • 4 of 5

Tel que décrit. Liz very helpful. The owner responded quickly to our questions and request. Le calme à la campagne. Il faut méditer dans le solarium, en face des collines et des pâturages! A small welcoming package very appreciated if you arrive late in the afternoon. Tous les appareils ménagers fonctionnent très bien. Bed is comfortable. Avons assisté brièvement à la tonte des moutons chez le voisin! No problem orienting yourself with a GPS. Lots to visit - a must: l'île de Skye.

I would recommend this cottage without hesitation. Venez visiter les Highlands en restant dans ce petit bungalow de campagne.

Fabulous cottage

  • 5 of 5

What a gem, a fabulous cottage in an unspoilt area with views to die for, everything you need to relax and unwind with welcome goodies and a very warm welcome from Liz who made sure everything was just perfect. Plenty of lovely wildlife to see, sheep and cows next door and a variety of birds. We were lucky to have the full moon rising over the glen, very romantic. The weather was excellent for the whole week and the location is perfect for touring.we will never forget our holiday in the highlands and would not hesitate to recommend this cottage, thanks!!!

Lovely cottage

  • 5 of 5

We were a family of five adults, staying for a week. Liz (Jim's aunt) called in to ensure we had everything we needed.

The cottage is fully equipped, including tea, coffee, sugar, loo rolls etc.

A welcome gift of fruit, biscuits and wine were very appreciated.

The water is hot throughout the day which is excellent.

We did have a problem with sorting out the fridge temp. Liz responded quickly, bringing a fridge thermometer and stayed to check that the fridge temp was cooling and at the correct temp.

The name of the house on the wall would be a good idea, as we were unsure if we'd found the right house.

I ordered food from Asda on line and had it delivered.

Co-op in Drumnadrochit is well stocked should you forget to bring something.

Many thanks for sharing your "home".

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

We found The Manor House warm, comfortable and spacious. We had a lovely welcome visit from the owner's representative. The only slight issue was originally finding the house as although the directions we received were clear, the house itself is not marked with a name on it and is one of 3 on top of the hill. However, our stay was really enjoyable.
