About the property

A former farmhouse with 4 double bedrooms, 2 bath/shower rooms, large sitting room, separate dining room and kitchen and close to local amenities and the Vendee coast

La Basse Gourderie is a large detached former farmhouse set in a well established garden, with a securely fenced pool, overlooking a lake and surrounding farmland. The garden offers sun and shade and plenty of space to relax and enjoy the peace of the countryside and the opportunity to play croquet or some of the other outdoor games available.

Within minutes of the house are the villages of Landeronde and Beaulieu sous la Roche, making it close to local shops, an excellent restaurant and other amenities. Aizenay and La Mothe Achard where there are larger supermarkets and good restaurants are both 10 kilometres away.

There are many local walks and the wonderful Vendee coast, with beautiful sandy beaches and a coastal path for walking and cycling is just 25 minutes away. It is a fifteen minute drive to the Lac du Jaunay for either long or short walks and a restaurant, which is open from April to October, and several areas for picnics.

The Vendee is not too far from the channel ports; St Malo is less than three hours away; Caen and Cherbourg are between four and half and five hours away; it is an hour Nantes airport and La Rochelle is one and half hours away; and the TGV runs from Paris to La Roche sur Yon, just 10 kilometres away. It also benefits from a mild climate and plenty of sunshine.

The house is just off a quiet country road and stands in a large garden with ample parking for several cars. The door in the centre of the house leads into the large, comfortable sitting room, with south facing windows to the front and patio doors to the rear leading to a large terrace with table and chairs for eating out from breakfast till evening. The terrace overlooks the large garden, with shrub beds and a mixture of fruit and ornamental trees, and the pool.

The sitting room has two sofas, an arm chair and additional chairs, an oval table, a coffee table, side tables, television, radio and CD player. There is a wood burning stove for spring, autumn and winter visits. To one side of the sitting room is the kitchen and an open doorway leading through to the dinning room.

The self contained kitchen is very well equipped with an electric hob, combined oven and grill, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and coffee maker. In the cupboards and drawers there is a generous supply of crockery, cutlery, serving dishes, mixing bowls, cooking pans and a mixer.

The light and spacious dining room has a good sized table and seating for up to 10 people as well as a high chair. In the cupboards there is a generous supply of crockery, serving dishes and glasses to compliment those stored in the kitchen. The toaster and a table lamp are in the recess. The dining room has a window and door to the front and patio doors to the rear opening onto to the terrace, secure well and garden.

The dining room leads through to a study, where there is another wood burning stove, a generous supply of novels and children's books as well as many indoor and outdoor games for all ages. There is also a basket with floats and toys for the pool, balls and buckets and spades for the beach. For our younger visitors there is a buggy with waterproof cover.

To the side of the study is the utility where there is an additional fridge freezer, a washing machine, vacuum cleaner, storage cupboards and other household items, a small bike, balance bike, scuttle bug and old fashioned scooter. It also has the central heating boiler and pool plant.

Opposite the entrance to the dining room a door from the sitting room leads into the hall and the two storey section of the house. There are two double bedrooms, a shower room and separate toilet on the ground floor and a staircase leading to two double bedrooms and the family bathroom.

The first bedroom on the ground floor faces the garden and overlooks the pool. It has a double bed and two Z-beds suitable for young children, which can be moved to any room to suit our guests needs, a travel cot, a built in wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a sofa. The second bedroom has a door to the front and a window to the rear overlooking the garden and pool. There are two single beds and space for a Z-bed or cot and for children to play, a free standing wardrobe and matching chest of drawers, bookshelves with a range of books for adults and young children.

In the hall there is space to hang coats and a table football game.

Upstairs there is a spacious landing, a family bathroom with bath, separate shower, hand basin and toilet and two double bedrooms, one with a king-size bed the other with a double bed and cot-bed.

Both of these bedrooms have fitted wardrobes, a dressing table or chest of drawers and bedside tables and lights. There are fans for use on hot summer nights and central heating radiators for cooler spring, autumn and winter days.

The house has a mature garden with a securely fenced pool (which has recently been renovated and has an all year round cover) swings and space for children to play and adults to relax in sun or shade in a selection of sun loungers and other garden chairs.

To the rear of the house the terrace has a large garden table, chairs and gas barbecue. To the side of the pool and overlooking the garden there is a breeze house with table and seating making it an ideal spot for meals throughout the day. To the front of the house there is parking for several cars.

The village of Landeronde has a bakers, small supermarket, a bar, a 16th century church and a park with a lake and childrens' play area and table tennis table. In the opposite direction is Beaulieu sous la Roche, which is known locally as the Village d'Arts. As well as two bakers, a supermarket, banks, hairdressers, second hand shop and florist there is a potter, book binder, artists and jewellery maker. Le Café des Arts, one of two restaurants, has regular displays of work by local artists.

There are many walks and cycle tracks locally and it is possible to walk all the way round the nearby Lac du Jaunay, where there is also a restaurant with outside tables overlooking the lake for a relaxing lunch or evening meal. There are also several picnic areas alongside the lake.

The Vendee coast with the coastal towns of St Gilles, Bretignolles and Les Sables d'Olonne and many golden sandy beaches, typical of the Vendee, are just 25 minutes away. Also within easy reach is the Chateau and lake at Apremont, and many other leisure and historical attractions typical of the area, such as the Zoo at Les Sables d'Olonne (a lovely place for children to visit), Le Potager Extrodinaire at La Mothe Achard (at its best in late summer) and the well regarded Le Puy du Fou. Information about the Vendee, leisure activities, museums, historical sites to visit and all the area has to offer is available in the house.

About Ann Fryer

The Vendee had become a favourite holiday spot for 15 years before we purchased La Basse Gourderie as our family holiday home in 2001. We enjoy the peace and tranquility of the surrounding countryside, the close proximity of the local villages and easy access to several nearby beaches and coastal towns. After converting the remains of a typical Vendee barn into a one bedroom dwelling we have been letting the house and welcoming many guests since 2012.

While retaining many of the features of a French country farmhouse, we have added a kitchen, dining room, study, utility, central heating and wood-burning stoves and have up-dated the bathrooms, changed the internal doors, re-carpeted the upstairs bedrooms and landing and begun decorating some of the rooms. Outside we installed the pool, which has a new lining and cover for the summer of 2016, and planted fruit and ornamental trees, created shrub beds, a patio and space to relax and play.

La Basse Gourderie is a spacious and well equipped family home, making it an ideal place for families to spend a holiday. But the peaceful setting also means the house offers the opportunity for adults to relax and enjoy all the house, with its generous supply of books, the garden and the area at different times of the year.

Situated close to local amenities it also benefits from the peace (only broken by the squeals of delight from our guests in the pool) and tranquillity of the surrounding countryside. There is easy access to several seaside towns and many of the sandy beaches the Vendee has to offer. Travelling from the ports of Brittany and Normandy is also easy on the mostly free motorways. And the airports of Nantes and La Rochelle are respectively one hour and one and half hours away.

The house is available throughout the year and so offers the opportunity for an 'out of season' holiday for families with small children or more mature people who want to relax, enjoy the peace of the country and explore the local area at less busy times.

We had a very good time in this lovely spacious house. Ideal setting in the countryside and near to the coast.

We spent our family celebration, 9 of us, in August. So very old, beautifully renovated, furnished and equipped for all ages. Wonderful pool everyday. Bob and Ann live nearby, charming and helpful. We would all love to return someday.

Spent a lovely relaxing week in this beautiful place. Weather (in June) could have been better but we still enjoyed it. We spent plenty of time in the garden watching the wildlife.

I have really enjoyed my time here. It has been fascinating looking at fantastic wildlife - J age 11. I have loved my holiday here. The pool is fantastic - B age 11. Notes on accommodation: La Basse Gourderie is a large, spacious restored farmhouse suitable for one or two families or a group of friends who want to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside combined with easy access to the wonderful Vendee coast and a wide range of local attractions and amenities. One of the sunniest parts of France, the Vendee is good for spring, summer and autumn holidays and there are local Christmas Markets to visit in early December. The house has indoor and outdoor toys and games, puzzles and space for children to play as well as a study with a generous supply of books for adults and children. Outside The large sheltered garden has a private swimming pool, which is 10 by 5 metres and has a secure fence round. It has recently been re-lined and the cover replaced. Doors from the sitting room and dining room give onto the large patio where there is a garden table with 8 chairs and in summer a gas barbecue. The breeze house also has a large table and cushioned seating and is another place to sit, relax or eat while enjoying the garden. There are a number of mature trees offering shade and there are sun loungers and deckchairs to relax in and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the countryside. From the patio there is a view of our neighbours lake, which is visited regularly by a heron, a number of other birds and wildlife. The garden also has plenty of space for children to play in safety and there are rackets, balls and other garden games and swings for younger children. The garden is well maintained and has a mixture of fruit and ornamental trees, a vegetable plot and shrub beds. Utility Room: The large utility room has a fridge freezer, washing machine, washing basket, sink, clothes airer, iron and ironing board, storage cupboards, the oil fired central heating boiler and pool plant. In winter the barbecue and sun-loungers are stored here. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: End of let clean, kitchen towels, tea towels, bath mats and hand towels in the bathroom, shower room, toilet and utility are included. Linen (sheets, pillow cases and two towels per person) can be provided at an additional charge of E15 each for the twin beds and E20 for the double and kingsize beds per week. Other: The large, light dining room has a door to the front of the house and French doors to the rear leading to the patio and garden. The large dining table has 8 (+2) chairs and a high chair, and there is a toaster and cupboards with crockery and glasses

Good family holiday house

Ann and Rob made us very welcome and helped us with local imformation. The pool is excellent and safe for young children. The garden is large enough for games and exploration. All the normal equipment plus lots of extras, were there which saved us from bringing it from the UK, all very thoughtful. A great house for young children with the TV and lots of indoor and outdoor games which we used to the full. Would recommend.

Fantastic fortnight in a beautiful place

We spent a fortnight at La Basse Gourderie as an extended family of seven, including a 6 and almost 3 year old. We had a fantastic time there! The rustic farmhouse is really lovely and so well equipped. There was so much for the children to do, lots of games, books and toys in the bedrooms and study. The bedrooms are large and the youngest slept in a travel cot in the study, which was a really useful option.

The garden is delightful, we had almost every meal outside including many in the lovely breeze house; the perfect shady lunch time spot. The view of the lake was so relaxing and the place is very peaceful. The pool was a great hit too.

We found several local restaurants that were recommended by the owners, Rob and Ann, which were all very nice. We had a favourite beach that was just perfect for rock pooling, this was about 25 minutes drive. The local boulangerie is lovely and only a 2 mile round trip, which I did by bike every morning. Landeronde is a lovely little village.

Rob and Ann were incredibly welcoming and helpful, they obviously enjoy being great hosts. Rob showed the boys his train set, the local farm animals and took us to a great vineyard to stock up!

The house does have wifi, but it is only accessible in a few areas of the house and garden, this didn't bother us at all but is worth noting if someone relies on a connection when away.

Overall we highly recommend the place, it's a beautiful rustic home from home and we hope to return one day. Thank you Rob and Ann.

A Farmhouse for a great holiday

We decided to have a family re-union and arranged for 3 children and parents to meet us at this lovely old modernized house in the Vendee.

The house complete with a great pool which proved so popular with our 3 kids 13,10 and 7 that they spent time day every swimming. The house has a extensive garden with fruit trees and the kids used it for games in between swimming.

We were fortunate to meet the owners who are charming and extremely helpful. We intend to return for another relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

We had a wonderful family holiday at this beautiful house in The Vendee.

The accommodation for up to 10 people is large, all the rooms giving plenty of space for a family to have fun and enjoy. the house has been tastefully restored and is well furnished.

The garden and outside pool are a great bonus and the location is quite but close to all the needs of a family.

Its location is great to get to from the ferry and also to visit the Vendee and the surrounding area

I would recommend this accommodation to anyone and we hope to visit again in the future.

Nous avons beaucoup aimé Landeronde.

Cette longère avec ses murs épais, son ameublement charmant, ses pièces spacieuses et son confort nous a séduits. Il ne manque rien, ni le couteau de cuisine ou l'éssoreuse à salade, ni les livres à lire devant le poêle ou le babyfoot ni même les jeux de bains pour les petits. De plus Ann et Rob nous accueillent avec tant de gentillesse que nous avons l'impression de faire partie de la famille. C'est une adresse en or que nous vous recommandons vivement.

Coast/Beach:

The unspoilt beaches of the coastal towns of Les Sables d'Olonnes, Brem sur Mer, Bretignolles, St Gilles Croix de Vie and many others are 20 - 25 minutes away by car. They all have long stretches of sandy beaches, rock pools and safe sea bathing.

Several of the coastal towns have markets, shops and restaurants and, for sailing enthusiasts, Les Sables d'Olonne has regular regattas. There is also the opportunity for sea trips and fishing trips from both Les Sables d'Olonne and St Gilles Croix de Vie.

The house is also within easy distance of Lac de Journay where there is plenty of opportunity to walk and enjoy the scenery or take our a pedalo, picnic by the lake or eat at the restaurant. Apremont, with its lake where swimming is permitted and its chateau to visit is not too far away.

Within a short distance of the house there are designated walks and throughout the area there are many other places to walk or cycle including along the coast, above the beach with cafes and restuarants nearby.

Travel:

A car is essential for travelling to and from the house to beaches and other attractions. The immediate area is good for walking and cycling.

St Malo is 3 hours away, Cherbourg, Caen and Le Havre are 4 - 5 hours away, mostly on free motorways, (speak to the owner about Brittany Ferry discounts). Calais is 6 - 7 hours away. It is 1 hour to Nantes airport and 1 - 2 hours to La Rochelle, Angers and Poitiers airports. The TGV runs from Paris to Les Sables d'Olonnes via La Roche sur Yon, which is 10k away.

Distances:

Landeronde with its bakers, small supermarket and post office is 2k away and in the opposite direction it is 2k to Beaulieu sous la Roche, where there are bakers, supermarket, doctors, pharmacy, hairdressers, banks and a very good restaurant. It is only 10k to the market towns of Aizenay and La Mothe Achard where there are more shops, quality restaurants and large supermarkets.

Le Lac du Jaunay, which is encircled by a footpath and has picnic areas and a restaurant on its shores, is 15 minutes.

Further Details:

Beaulieu sous la Roche is known locally as the 'Village d'Arts' and there are local artists, a potter and a book binder and others who exhibit and sell their work. There is a regular display of paintings by local artists in 'Café des Arts' as well as seasonal artistic displays in shops.

The area has many walks, which are clearly marked, and some are also suitable for cycling.

Booking Notes:
The new rates now include bed linen and two towels per person. At peak times such as Easter and school holidays, the booking will start and finish on a Saturday. Arrival is from 4.00pm on the first day and departure by 10.00am on the last day. There is some flexibility with arrival and departure dates for bookings at other times of the year.
At other times there may be some flexibility with length of stay, and arrival and departure times. Booking can be online with Owners Direct or directly with the owner when A deposit of 20% is required to confirm the booking and the remaining balance is due 8 weeks before the start of your holiday. Bookings made within 8 weeks will need to be paid in full when the booking is confirmed.

Changeover Day:
During peak season the preferred booking is for 7 days with Saturday as the changeover day. Out of season it is possible to book shorter stays (minimum 3 nights) with more flexible arrival and departure times.

Notes on prices:
Book by 31.12.2017 for 2018 at 2017prices. Included in the price are end of let cleaning, electricity, water, local taxes. If Z-beds and additional linen are required, there is an additional charge of €15 for each Z-bed. There are bikes and a child seat for hire at a cost of €10 per bike per week and free for young children are a 'scuttle bug', two wheeler bike with stabalizers, a balance bike and an old fashioned scooter and many games.
