About the property

FR9868 18th C. private estate

This beautiful estate is an ideal location to enjoy peace and tranquillity walking, exploring and watching the abundant wildlife. For ornithologists, your binoculars are a must! 27 different birds including kingfishers and buzzards were spotted by one lady and last year we had red squirrels and green woodpeckers scavenging for nuts and worms under the same walnut tree! In May, we had 3 tawny owls fledge in the pigeonnier. For the botanist, rare and wild flowers, including orchids, can be found in our wild flower meadows. For the more active there are many tracks for serious walkers and cyclists. We have half a dozen bikes(of the Famous Five variety - no charge), a football field with goalposts and a badminton net, table tennis, table football, boules and a dartboard. For history buffs, there are many plaques in the area relating to the Resistance and we have our own underground shaft where weapons and ammo were stored. We have a large lake stocked with carp and bream. Both trout fishing and an 18 hole golf course are within 1 mile.

Meals featuring local delicacies can be supplied on arrival and during the holiday by prior arrangement. A 20 minute walk takes you to the local bar at the golf club. Most restaurants have a lunch time menu - 3 courses for 12 euros.

For a special night out, try Julians in a beautiful village called Paunat 20 minutes away. Located in the grounds of a 1000 year old abbey , the restaurant has lovely food, a great ambiance and the french proprietor, Julian, speaks perfect english with a real sparkle in his eye.... 21 euros for a 3 course meal.

About Mike or Lindy Crowcroft

Lindy and I were not actually house hunting when the agent took us to see Les Sarrazinies - merely practising for a time in the future. We met outside the village church and found ourselves driving up the properties wooded avenue before emerging on the brow of a hill next to the 18th C. farmhouse. As we stepped out of the car and looked 300 metres down the lawns to the lake and on into the woods, we were completely blown away by the sheer beauty and tranquillity of the place.

Without even going in to the buildings, we knew we had found the right place and fast tracked our retirement.

Since acquiring Les Sarrazinies, we have updated the cottages - originally barns and rooms for smoking hams and roasting chestnuts. Visitors return time and time again and have become friends.

Mike or Lindy Crowcroft purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Mike or Lindy Crowcroft chose Perigord Noir

Les Sarrazinies offers the best of both worlds - complete tranquillity in the centre of a 65 acre estate. Ideal for children (or grandchildren in our case). Yet within a 10 minutes drive can be found a dozen restaurants, an excellent supermarket, an 18 hole golf course and English speaking doctors and vets.

Within 40 minutes are all the top tourist destinations in the southern Dordogne - the caves at Lascaux 2, the chateaux at Beynac and Castlenaud and the Dordogne and Vezere fishing and canoeing rivers.

We host a drinks party at the beginning of the week so that we can share our local knowledge on restaurants, markets, tourist sites and vineyards. It's also a chance to get to know your neighbours!

What makes this cottage unique

Fishing in the lake - a catfish broke a 20 lb line 3 years ago!

There is a live camera feed from the top of the pigoniere (where barn owls breed most years) to an accessible TV screen.

Nesting box for kestrel in the woods.

A deep man made shaft in the woods where it is believed the French resistance stored their weapons and ammo.

Use of herb garden - rosemary, basil, thyme, mint, tarragon and parsley.

Wild boar farm within walking distance where you can see the young boar and buy boar products for the BBQ.

Last but not least, for those who want to eat in and not cook, our resident guardian, Nigel, is a professional cook, specialises in local Perigordian dishes - duck or wild boar . He can also prepare meals to order.

Les Sarrazinies - Brilliant!!

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful week at Les Sarrazinies in the beautiful Dordogne region of France. We wanted the option of having a completely relaxing week with plenty of options if we felt a bit more energetic and that is exactly what we found!

Les Sarrazinies is beautiful - with a small number of cottages set in 65 acres. The salt water pool is immaculate and was very inviting every day. Our hosts Mike and Lindy were great and offered us helpful advice on a selection of options to visit the attractions in the local area. The history of the area shone through and we visited Chateau des Milandes; the home of the amazing Josephine Baker together with many other local towns/villages each of which had a different magic about it. We found the people to be very friendly and the local food was excellent. We will definitely return soon to explore some more and I would not hesitate to recommend Les Sarrazinies to anyone.

Great Gite Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from 10 days at Les Sarrazinies. The gite was great with characterful wooden beams and large fire place it was equipped with everything we needed for our stay. Set in large grounds that were the perfect starting point for evening walks and morning runs, the lake and trees made this a very tranquil place to relax.

The Gites are perfectly located for visiting all the attractions in the region and Mike and Lindy will offer great advice on where to go if you are new to the area when you arrive like us. The fresh eggs from Annette's chickens are definitely not to be missed. Would recommend to anyone visiting this area and hope to return in the future.

A little Gem.

  • 5 of 5

We were very pleased and delighted to discover this little gem. We were in desperate need of a hideaway where we could relax after a rather stressful time and we were not disappointed. Milke and Lindy have made a beautiful home in the Dordogne, with all the little luxuries of home echoing throughout the entire estate. Our welcome from them was wonderful, it was quite late when we arrived but never the less they both came out and greeted us. The following evening we were invited into their residence for drinks and nibbles, which I must say we're delightful, and were introduced to another new couple to Les Sarrazinies. We were given some wonderful tips on places to visit, and bearing in mind we only had 3 days there, the info was invaluable. We also met Annette who lives and works there as well, and happened to hail from our neck of the woods. The atmosphere is wonderful, everyone was extremely helpful but not intrusive. This is a must for anyone of any age to escape to, the pool is excellent and being heated enabled us to swim everyday. Sad to leave but really looking forward to another visit. Well done Mike and Lindy for making our stay perfect. Thank you.

Perfect Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for the perfect hideaway where a touch of magic awaits you, then look no further and head for Les Sarrazinies in the Dordogne. Owned and run by Lindy and Mike Crowcroft this is one of those rare places that feels, quite simply, a best kept secret. From the moment we arrived to their warm welcome we were struck by the charm and tranquillity of this beautiful place. The cottages are set within 63 acres of stunning lawns and woodland, graced by a lake filled with lilies and a state of the art salinated swimming pool. Each cottage is fully equipped for home from home living, including a barbeque and herb garden. We loved this place and cannot wait to return and suggest that you put it at the top of your list for a real treat in store.

Peaceful & Tranquil

  • 5 of 5

Les Sarrazinies is in a beautiful location very peaceful & tranquil.

We were greeted by Mike & Lindy who showed us our accomodation, what a very pretty cottage well equipped & comfortable. Mike & Lindy were the perfect hosts, very helpful but never intrusive. During our week long stay we saw badgers, deer, red squirrels & numerous birds.

Our rest days were spent by the beautiful pool complex reading or just relaxing & when we got too hot a welcome dip in the pool.

The area is renowned for it's prehistoric caves & the scenery is spectacular with rocky outcrops. The surrounding forests provide many walking routes, whilst the numerous pretty villages provide excellent eating opportunities along with local evening entertainment. We would certainly recommend Les Sarrazinies to our family & friends

There is a large lake about 300 metres from the cottages with gently sloping sides - full of water lilies and fish! For the chefs we have a herb garden with rosemary, thyme, basil, tarragon, mint, sage, chives and enough tomatoes for everyone!
