La Villa Solferino is situated in an excellent location being very close to the Tuscan Umbrian boarder and in easy reach of all the most important historic and artistic centres including Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio and Spoleto in Umbria, and over in Tuscany the towns of Arezzo, Siena, and the city of Florence. The Villa has been beautifully restored with many of its original features such as the fireplaces, exposed beams and marble worktops in the kitchen. The house is a mix of the state of the art with modern bathrooms, stainless steel and marble kitchen, and beautiful Italian furniture. The pool is finished in travertine stone with easy access steps in the shallow end giving it the feel of a wonderful Roman bath. There is WIFI internet access, a DVD player and television. There are a host of local restaurants all serving an excellent selection of the most delicious Umbrian cuisine, the nearest being in the local village of Lugnano.
Simon moved to Italy 26 years ago and as a fluent Italian speaker is a great source of local information and ideas of where to go to get the most from your holiday. However, Villa Solferino is so secluded and tranquil, the longer you stay the less you want to leave, even to go to the shops in the valley below.
Simon Mather purchased this villa in 2006
Villa Solferino sits near the top of a hill overlooking an amazing panoramic view of hills and valleys as far as the eye can see. Set in its own olive grove with rows of vines in between, the house sits in an elevated position with terrace and garden giving ample room for enjoying an outdoor life in complete seclusion. There are footpaths into the surrounding woodland where chestnuts and porcini grow, so perfect for foraging the occasional wild meal. The pool is exquisite, understated and discreet but offering the perfect place to chill out and relax in the hotter summer months.
In the depths of the countryside and offering all the peace and beauty that a rural location can offer, Villa Solferino is also very well placed to explore more of Umbria and Tuscany. You do need a car but once there, you get so mesmerised by the view the inclination to leave becomes less and less. Reading, cooking, swimming in the lovely pool or enjoying chilled out time with friends and family, this is the perfect location to get the best of both worlds, timeless but none the less modern.
The villa is absolutely fantastic. We were a family group of four couples, and
there was plenty of space for everyone.
Mornings were spent drinking coffee and looking out at the view. The kitchen
was very well equipped for cooking for a large group, and eating out on the
veranda with a fire in the outdoor fireplace was a highlight.
We met Simon socially whilst on holiday in Italy last year and he took us to see Villa Solferino while we were there. We feel in love with it immediately and started to plan a visit straight away. As we work in tourism ourselves we can only manage an autumn holiday so the pool and alfesco eating weren't part of our routine. With a wood burning stove and open fires we made ourselves very cosy and watching the sun come up with the valleys shrouded in cloud whilst the hill tops stuck up like floating islands in bright sunshine; we were in heaven.
Simon could not have been more helpful enabling us get the best out of our time there. He met us at the house, drove us to a supermarket so we knew where to shop and during the fortnight of our stay, took us to some wonderful places we would not have found without him. We met some of his friends and Simon made the whole holiday far more interesting than being strangers in a foreign land. We loved every moment and the house and its hill top vista entranced us in every weather and light. The more you stay the less you want to leave and I was wrenched away yesterday wishing I could spend the whole winter there looking at the view above the clouds in full sun. As an artist the house and garden has everything I could hope for and we will certainly go back next year for a special birthday.
Thank you Simon.
Booking on the web from the other side of the world brings it's concerns but I did on behalf of my group of friends.
It took a wee while to find but we did and discovered the wonderful Villa Solferino. It was better than the photos. Lovely rooms, heaps of chill out spaces, beautiful trees and fruit, the pool and a chefs kitchen.
Simon was a great host, very helpful with local info and all our group enjoyed talking to him. It was a most enjoyable holiday, a favourite!
