We enjoyed our week in your farmhouse very much. Your cottage is charming, comfortable, wonderfully equipped, and with a delightful outlook. It more than met expectations. We were blessed with lovely weather and enjoyed visiting much of the beautiful countryside in the area, including the views from your ferry. We shall not hesitate to recommend to others. Thank you too for your warm welcome – not to mention the delicious cake!
Perfect Holiday Cottage
We arrived on Boxing day and spent a week in this beautiful traditional cottage. We could not have chosen a better place to stay and can highly recommend it. The location is just perfect to enjoy walking and exploring the stunning countryside, coast and beaches of South Hams a lot of which is on the door step. The cottage was spotlessly clean and tidy and is set in a very peaceful, beautiful and tranquil setting with a very well kept garden around it, which was beautiful even in winter. It is only a short drive to all the towns and villages and there are lots of great pubs and restaurants to chose from in the area. We particularly enjoyed the Church Inn at Churchstow who do a superb carvery on certain days. We enjoyed the local beach just down the lane and also Bantham Bay, Hope Cove, bIgbury on Sea and Thurlestone. Blackpool sands and Slapton Ley is also worth a visit.
The heavy rain we had at times didn't spoil our trip as the cottage was really warm and cosy and a great place to relax.
The owners were extremely helpful prior to and during our trip and we were very grateful for the delicious mince pies, nuts and tangerines left for us on our arrival which was very festive. Thank you very much Tricia & Tim we hope to be back soon. Jackie, Steve and Hannah
Cottages, Coves and Clifftops
Having read some very positive reviews on Owners Direct, we were not disappointed to find that Higher Soar Farmhouse was a perfect choice for our family holiday. The accommodation had plenty of room, heaps of character, was meticulously clean and everything we needed was provided. Outside there was a pretty private garden and the owners allowed us use of their field with a beautiful wild pond.
We enjoyed many family days out to the local beaches, including the popular Bigbury-on-Sea with a walk (or sea tractor at high tide) to Burgh Island across the causeway (great fast food cafe), to the dramatic rock arch in the bay at Thurlestone and a quieter evening visit to the fishing harbour at Hope Cove. An early morning walk to Soar Mill Cove, including spotting buzzards, kestrels and peregrines, was a real treat.
For something different, we also enjoyed the inland estuaries at Kingsbridge with its child-friendly restaurant serving great pizzas at the Crabshell Inn and also the causeway and nature reserve at Aveton Gifford (great play park in the village centre). Further East, we enjoyed a pleasant sheltered walk down to Start Point lighthouse and the atmospheric ruins of the deserted village at Hallsands. We would also recommend visiting the pebbly beach and lagoon at Slapton Ley and broad seafood menu at the Start Bay Inn in Torcross.
Salcombe was the place to experience the real ‘boating’ feel especial arriving by the owner’s ferry from South Sands. The more choppy return was immensely enjoyed by our son who could have stayed on the boat all day!
The rugged beauty of Dartmoor was an easy hour’s drive, where we enjoyed the waterfall at Lydford Gorge and the wonderful panoramic view of the moors from the church at Brentor.
But our favourite place became Bolberry Down with its fantastic views along the coastline and finding lizards in the gorse. We had a superb meal on our last night at the Port Light Hotel with excellent service from the staff and a great wooden play park for the children.
In short, the farmhouse was the perfect base for a range of family activities in the South Hams, the owners were very welcoming and helpful, and we would happily return in the future.

Fantastic Holiday Home
We have just returned from a brilliant week at Higher Soar Farmhouse. Tim & Tricia made us so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The cottage was extremely clean and comfortable. Thoroughly enjoyed the trips on Tim's ferry from South Sands to Salcombe. We will definitely be returning in 2016.

Great cottage - a nature lovers delight!
Our family (of just 3) had a fantastic weeks holiday in this great, clean cottage in what for us was a fantastic location close to lovely countryside, stunning walks and beautiful coastline. Loved everything including the owners (Tricia & Tim) who were always on hand next door, the chocolate cake on arrival, the garden and field with large pond with all its wildlife (including The Fantastic Mr Fox), the nest-cam from the barn following the progress of the swallow chicks, the stars and silence at night, the great 30-40 minute walk to Overbecks (NT) and the fantastic South Sands beach, the double kayaks (which our 6 year old son loved with his Dad), the great 15 minute ferry ride to Salcombe with Captain Tim & friendly crew to enjoy the crabbing at Victoria Quay or to sit with an ice cream or pint and watch the many boats exploring the waters, or to shop, or to grab great steak from the butcher, or local cheese from a deli, or seafood from the fishmongers for a lovely dinner in the evening. We explored all the coastal area including Soar Mill Cove (great evening walk from the cottage to enjoy the beach to yourself), Hope Cove (had a nice meal at the busy Hope & Anchor pub) & the stunning coastal walk to Bolt Head, Bigbury on Sea, East Prawle (more stunning coastal walks), Kingsbridge (had a lovely stone baked pizza at The Crabshell Inn overlooking the sunny estuary) and Dartmouth for more boats. We had good weather and the only negative was that we had to come home! If you love the coast & countryside & walking & nature you will love it here. We are sure to return.

Guests enjoy unlimited free rides on this Ferry (owned by us)! The Blue Flag beach has two luxury hotels, a beach cafe and watersports facilities. Salcombe and the South Hams area boast many more excellent beaches.

By Road: from the M5/A303 the A38 Devon Expressway takes you to within half an hour of the cottage. Approximate distances: Malborough 1.6 miles, Salcombe 3 miles, Kingsbridge 5 miles, Plymouth 24 miles, Exeter 30 miles.
In Malborough Village the local store sells a wide range of groceries, freshly baked bread, wine, etc. Salcombe has a range of excellent shops, including a butcher, fishmonger and many clothes shops. Locally caught Crab and Lobster are available to buy from the fishermen in Island Street. For larger supermarkets the nearby town of Kingsbridge has a new Tescos and Morrisons as well as a very attractive High Street with Boots, Smiths, Costas etc and a range of interesting local shops Delis. Kingsbridge also has a Leisure Centre and weekly outdoor markets.
There are many lovely places to eat out in the vicinity of Salcombe, whether you fancy a full english breakfast overlooking the water at the Winking Prawn, a Devonshire cream tea at the South Sands Hotel or a meal at one of the town's numerous restaurants. Should you just wish to have a drink there are many good local pubs.
Salcombe is a well known centre for sailing and other watersports, from waterskiing lessons to Mackerel fishing trips and Estuary cruises. A few miles away at Bantham and Bigbury are two of England's foremost surfing beaches, both with surf schools and equipment hire available. There really is something for everyone on the water.
For walkers the area really is idyllic. From the cottage, footpaths connect you to the National Trust Coastal Path which in turn leads to the NT Overbecks House and Botanical Garden, home of a world famous Magnolia. In the other direction Hope Cove and onwards. A little further afield is Dartmoor National Park complete with Tors and ponies.
The area is well known for its bird life, the cottage was even graced with a flypast from two Bustards (part of the reintroduced birds from Sailsbury Plain).
The cottage is a firm favourite for Astronomers, with no other houses between us and France. The clarity of the night sky with no light pollution, has to be seen to be believed.
