Kamen Kuca, (stone house in Croatian) has recently been renovated to a high standard and forming 2 separate, self contained apartments. Much of the old stone work has been retained inside. The views from the upper balcony are fabulous and look out over the old town of Jelsa and the marina. All restaurants and cafes are in walking distance as are supermarkets and banks. Visit the old town square and enjoy watching the world go by whilst enjoying a coffee. Early morning trips to the harbour will enable you to watch the local fishermen bringing in their catch for the market. In the evening watch the sun go down as you dine at one of the many waterside restaurants and if you're still up for more there's always the nightclub and cocktail bars!

The well equipped kitchen/dining area has table and chairs, fridge, 4 ring hob, oven and coffee machine.

Outside there is a large terrace with patio table and chairs and BBQ.

We had a lovely time in Split and in Jelsa.

Your house is restored beautifully and we enjoyed our stays in both apartments. We particularly enjoyed Dva because the children slept better in twin beds than in the bunk beds; also the washing machine there was much appreciated. We loved the fact that the houses felt so homely and were so well equipped - we enjoyed the dvds, books and games.

Your folder of info on beaches and restaurants was invaluable and much used. Konoba Vrisnik, Turan and Me and Mrs Jones were favourite restaurants. Kids would say Pelago and excellent pizza.

One tip I will pass on is that we found a great place to park less than 10 mins from the house. It was a car park on Put Potoka, the road that leads in to the main church. We were charged 150 Kuna for 7 nights' parking.

Other highlights of our holiday were an open air concert by 2 choirs in St Ivan's Square, a walk and a cold drink in Humac, and lots of beaches and coves. We had some interesting driving challenges including multiple point turns at dead ends at cliff tops and long reversing manoeuvres alongside severe drops (the two forks at Mala Stiniva; enjoyed the beaches though) - can see the advantage of scooters over cars. Vela Stiniva a few days later a much easier experience. In some places eg Zavala /Skalinada there was complete gridlock and no parking. Went on to Ivan Dolac and had a lovely day.

One comment re churches mentioned in the cultural brochure - I walked to most of them but only the main one is ever open. Checked this out with Jesa tourist info too. The main church (St Mary's) also had additional opening on a Sunday for the fortress and bell tower (for 10 Kuna).

All in all we had a great introduction to the wonderful Croatian climate, scenery, history, food and people. We definitely hope to be back. Thank you for a beautiful place to stay in a perfect location; thanks also for all your help and advice beforehand.

After first seeing Hvar Island on TV’s “A place in the sun “ in 2003 we headed out to see this dream location for ourselves. We fell in love with the rustic charm and knew this was the right place to buy a holiday home. We scoured the island for a few weeks before realising that our base camp position, the harbour town of Jelsa, was the best place for a holiday. In 2004, we were shown around this traditional stone house in a quiet side street, just a short stroll away from the town centre. After a major refurbishment project, we finally have the property to the standard it is today. After exploring the rest of the island we still come back to this great harbour town and realise we have the best holiday home location.

Activity and Interests

Car: not necessary

Coast/Beach:

Jelsa has a very interesting and beautiful harbour with plenty to sit and watch and take in whilst chilling in one of the many cafes/bars all within walking distance of the apartments. Mina beach is a short walk from the apartment and is very popular with families. If you have a car or scooter then your choices are far greater. From beautiful white stone beaches on the south of the island to rugged rocks on the north you will be spoiled for choice.

Travel:

The closest airport to Hvar is Split although flights do also come into Dubrovnik and Zadar.

From Split airport it is a 30 minute taxi drive to the ferry port. There is a daily catamaran to Jelsa or a 2 hour crossing on one of the many daily ferries to Stari Grad on Hvar. (20mins taxi ride from Jelsa)

Distances:

A short cycle ride or walk along the coast will take you to the lovely marina town of Vrboska. Only 5 miles away is Stari Grad, one of the oldest Croatian towns and you can be lost for a whole day in the old back streets and history of the area. As well as being steeped in history, as the sun goes down, Hvar Town is fast gaining a reputation for partying and is frequented by British Royalty - Prince Harry - and movie stars alike. Don't miss one or two cocktails at Carpe Diem!

Further Details:

Jelsa is a great centre for your holiday. Many boats leave frequently throughout the day to the nearby island of Brac. Cycle and scooter hire are also available as well as car hire. During the summer season you will be able to find lots going on including, concerts, displays and even a pirate attack at nearby Vrboska! Tennis is available at the nearby hotel and don't forget Jelsa is famous for it's wonderful ice cream parlours. The surrounding countryside is also very beautiful with mountains, pine forests, vineyards and of course the sailing!

The climate on Hvar is fantastic, and the sea is beautifully clear, great for snorkelling with many areas very safe for children/non-swimmers. The laid back charm of the island is a magnet to us and to all we know have visited. Our property is a few minutes walk away from the town square,so you can have the total peace and quiet there or wander down to the square, a great place to just sit with a coffee, beer or chilled glass of wine with or without a delicious local icecream sundae, and watch the world go by. Now, teaming up with personable experienced letting managers, who are island residents, we are confident that your stay will be a very enjoyable one too. We feel we have found that idyllic holiday destination that has a little something for everyone whatever age.

There is a selection of books and DVDs in the apartments. A welcome pack including basic groceries and a bottle of wine is included in the price. Please note the bedroom airconditioning is located in central lobby between the 3 bedrooms. Outside: The villa is situated in a quiet part of the town but within easy walking distance to the town square, restaurants and cafes and the catamaran terminal. There is public parking nearby. Both apartments have separate large terraces with patio table and chairs and a bbq.
